not so many. Cars and cats kill 1000 times as many. Bats may be a bigger problem.
In the United States, cars and trucks wipe out millions of birds each year, while 100 million to 1 billion birds collide with windows. According to the 2001 National Wind Coordinating Committee study, “Avian Collisions with Wind Turbines: A Summary of Existing Studies and Comparisons to Other Sources of Avian Collision Mortality in the United States," these non-wind mortalities compare with 2.19 bird deaths per turbine per year. That's a long way from the sum mortality caused by the other sources."

That's about 40l birds total USA killed by Windmills, and the newer turbines kill few birds because the turn slower. Cats also kill 100's of million of birds per year.
I have a question
Does anyone know how safe a wind turbine of lets say 5Kw is in a hurricane? Can it be operated during the storm? Sick and tired of loosing power for weeks after a storm!

I know that some turbines today are designed to be folded down during stormy weather, but operating it in a hurricane is begging for trouble. They aren't designed for winds like that. They can only take much before something gives and your wind turbine ends up traversing the state. You wouldn't get vast amounts of power from it during a storm either, wind turbines have a set limit on how fast they can spin.
Ted Kennedy did leave a legacy. He didn't want windmills in his backyard either.
Windmills SHOULD be subject to this careful environmental impact review. This will limit Winds to Offshore and Rural, where belongs. Micro turbines may have much less objectionable impact.

After looking at this photo, I can understand why Kennedy didn't want one withing viewing distance of his home. But, would like to see all of us have one .

I do run off wind energy. Our ranch and business both do. While we didn't run into what was "allowed" because of our amount of land and no real regulations out in our county, our wind generators are not that high(we invested what we could at the time). There are many smaller verisions out there for people to research, this article seems to point to an over 100 ft high one..there are other choices, including many that can be placed on your roof or roofline peak.
