NEW YORK — More bad news for journalists: The percentage of people who believe their work is inaccurate and biased continues to grow.

Nearly two-thirds – 63 percent – of Americans surveyed by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press believe that news stories are often inaccurate. That's a flip from when Pew first asked that question in 1985, when 34 percent of respondents believed stories were frequently inaccurate.

Pew also found that 74 percent of respondents believe stories tend to favor one side of an issue over another, up from 66 percent two years ago.

Those trends tend to go hand in hand, said Andrew Kohut, the Pew center's director.

"If people believe that news reports are often biased, they will say they're inaccurate," he said.

The findings indicate U.S. newspapers and broadcasters could be alienating the audiences they are struggling to keep as they try to survive financial turmoil. Pew Research's questionnaire didn't attempt to gauge how shrinking newspapers and other cutbacks at news organizations are affecting people's perceptions, though the reductions probably haven't helped, said Michael Dimock, an associate director for the center.

The financial problems mainly stem from a steep decline in the ad sales that generate most of the media's revenue. Newspapers' print editions have been losing readers to the Internet, and broadcasters' audiences are fragmenting in an age of cable TV and satellite radio.

The budget squeeze "means facts don't get checked as carefully as they should," according to Bill Keller, executive editor of The New York Times.

Story continues below

But he still believes many media outlets still go to great lengths to get the facts right and own up to their mistakes when the information is wrong.

"The great flood that goes under the heading `news media' has been poisoned by junk blogs, gossip sheets, shout radio and cable-TV partisans that don't deserve to be trusted," Keller told The Associated Press in an e-mail.

The Internet also has made it easier to research information and find errors in news stories, said Kathleen Carroll, the AP's executive editor. And the Web's discussion boards spread word of mistakes when they're found.

Carroll said she hopes the increased scrutiny and accountability fostered by the Internet will lead to better journalism.

"We're in the early stages of a changing relationship between news organizations and consumers, who are becoming much more vocal about what they like, what they don't and what they want to know," Carroll wrote in a statement. "It's not always pretty or pleasant, but that engagement can and does help improve coverage."

The slippage in attitudes toward the press primarily comes from Democrats. Republicans have long been critical of the news media, and now Democrats are joining them. Most Democrats (59 percent) say that news reports are often inaccurate, compared with 43 percent two years ago, Pew said.

Partisan attitudes toward cable news networks have hardened in the past two years, just as many of their programs become more overtly partisan.

Nearly three-quarters of Republicans surveyed (72 percent) view Fox News Channel positively, with 43 percent of Democrats feeling that way, Pew said. CNN had the opposite results: 75 percent of Democrats view the network favorably, while 44 percent of Republicans do. MSNBC, which has become more overtly liberal in primetime over the past year, has 60 percent approval from Democrats, with only 34 percent from Republicans.

Television is the dominant news source, while over the past year the Internet has surpassed newspapers as a dominant news source for national and international news. Newspapers still have a significant advantage over the Internet as a local news source, Pew said.

Seventy-eight percent of Republicans said the press was politically biased, compared with 50 percent of Democrats and 62 percent of independents, Pew said. In 1985, less than half of Republicans, Democrats and independent believed the press was politically biased.

A majority of people who say they get most of their news from Fox News Channel say that the media is too critical of America (59 percent) and immoral (51 percent), Pew said.

Despite the negative attitudes, a majority of those surveyed said it would be an important loss if news outlets are shut down, because of the economy or other reasons. Oddly, though fewer young people cite TV news or newspapers as primary sources, a higher percentage of them than of older respondents say it would be important if they were lost.

Pew surveyed 1,506 adults by landline telephones and cell phones from July 22 to 26. The margin of error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.

It isn't just Americans and it isn't just the print media.

Even as I write this comment, I'm expecting it to disappear into the Huffington Post data heaven where all posts go that raise questions that might cause people to doubt the the fundamental validity of the society we call 'western'.

I have penned many comments that are blue pencilled and yet, when I read the published mediation rules, it is obvious that I haven't broken those rules.

How can we have confidence in a media that has double standards such as these. Digital media will face this issue more than paper media ever did. It wasn't possible to comment in real time to a newspaper article. By taking the trouble to register and the time to read, analyse and respond to these articles, the average blog reader creates an investment in the medium. When he or she sees perfectly valid comments culled out for obviously political reasons, it is a very short step to distrusting the whole genre.

Newspapers are dying because they put what they wanted in front of what their customers needed. The blogosphere has gleefully trumpeted the death of print and assumed a position of unassailability due to its immediacy.

Well here's my heads-up to the blogosphere in general and Huffpo in particular. Beware the casual vanity that allowed the newspapers to fail. Yours may take a different form but the seeds it plants will grow into the same harvest.

The Media is biased. The media has two reasons to kiss repbu butt. 1. Ronald Regan did away with the Fairness Doctrine, and 2. Bill Clinton signed the Telecommunications Act of 1999. It’s important to note that even though Bill Clinton signed the Act, it was a republican idea. Dem’s have been paying the price ever since. The big 3 networks & the likes of CNN & Fixed Noise are all very large corporations – owned by even larger corporations. Corporations LOVE deregulation. Corporations will pay (bribe) for deregulation. Repubs LOVE to deregulate everything they possible can. (Banks, Enron, all the laws put in place AFTER the great depression to prevent another depression – gone, thanks, Phil Gramm). The reward for deregulating? A free pass. A repub-friendly media. The media gave George W. Bush a free pass for 8 years. They questioned him on NOTHING. He hijacked the justice dept. ala Nixon, NOT one word (with the exception of Keith Olbermann). No Weapons of Mass Destruction? No problem. The media looks the other way. Bush & Rove call John Kerry’s Purple Heart Illegitimate (Swift Boaters) No problem. Dan Rather reports GW Bush went A WO L from the National Guard and Dan Rather “disappears”. The media will be biased towards repubs as long as repubs help out the media & keep deregulating the industry. Even at the expense of the Constitution and the U.S.A. No wonder Americans think the media is biased & inaccurate. It is.

It really isn't "the news" anymore -- its become sensationalized garbage -- the facts are never really told because the story would end. The news likes to exploit the coverage taking the actual story so far off the mark.... politicians now use it to sway the public --- it is depressing to watch it ---

The usual plan of radicals is to destroy trust in government, but if they destroy trust in the media, how will they sell their distrust of government?

But with the blatantly obvious deliberate blackout on ACORN news and Van Jones news and far-out leftist radical beliefs of the other czars, it's clear that the former news media has now adopted the "hear no evil, see no evil, speak no truth" model of journalism.

You're kidding, right? I saw stories on Van Jones and ACORN in the mainstream media every day since the stories broke. The media gave Bush a free pass for 8 years and now you want to complain about Van Jones? Gimme a break.

Provoke : To incite to anger or resentment. To stir to action or feeling.

Inform : To impart information to; make aware of something.

If you want to know what's happened to the media? Ever since Roone Arledge, head of ABC Sports and Entertainment Division (and the mastermind behind ABC Monday Night Football) was placed over ABC News there has been a push to make TV News profitable. The addition of Rupert Murdoch into the fray a few years later has only made it worse. There are very few journalist left, they being replaced by "bodysnatchers" that are basically good-looking text readers. They not being competent and confident professionals often fall victim to the "bias myth" and subsequently race to the center and split every story down the middle. Their ethos "to inform" has been replaced with "to provoke" to garner readers and watchers.
Without a strong, journalist driven media the Becks, Hannity's and O' Reilly's are left unopposed to mislead.

Like it or not, ALL news sources present news with a particular perspective, or bias, as a result of their location, their language, their audience, their revenue streams, their relations, etc. This becomes even more evident when you consider international news.
As opposed to trying to fetter out the bias of media sources, shouldn't we come to terms with this as an integral part of the experience? The next time we consider a news story, wouldn't it be better to familiarize ourselves with a wide spectrum of opinions from several media sources and then decide for ourselves?
It seems better to me than searching for purity where it doesn't exist.

In line with the article, why ever more people are "media maxed" somehow, here an article in
the UK Guardian, in which the British papers were compared to what they were 25 years ago:
much calmer then, no commentariat, no angry finger jabbers, no pre-fixing of opinions, etc..
A change that took place in many places and countries.
My guess is that's where the "market" is tending, too many people wanting it indeed calmer and
more factual, just proper articles.

From my point of view, the mainstream media gets off on sensational stories and loves to gin up controversy between mostly now conservatives and liberals. I don't believe more than 5% of what they report, knowing that they're trying to please the corportate owners of their network. On the other hand, the cables are just as bad depending on which one you've tuned into. You have to read and sift through a lot of junk to be able to get a position on what's really happening and then I'm usually wrong half of the time.

People don;t seem to realize how the "liberal media" could be owned by GE and big business.
Follow the money people. The media is slanted, but not toward the left. That's why the 23%ers are well represented every time they throw another tantrum.

Thank goodness for the internet!

It's a sin when...

The Daily Show & The Colbert Report are now the most trusted news sources, besides the BBC.

They're comedy shows. That's how insane this country has become.

News run by the network entertainment units have to be suspect. They are more interested in ratings than facts. News used to be a loss leader for the networks and they did not expect to make money. As soon as they switched over to the new paradigm, the actions of the news media became suspect.

I bet you there is a positive correlation between the increase in Fox viewership and the increase in the lack of trust in media. But it's sort of like seeing people increasing eat junk food then noticing that there is more obesity and blaming the junk food for it. So stop watching Fox, it's the equivalent of junk food, folks, and start watching real news so you can trust your news again.

If most watch Fox News, they are right. The media is biased and inaccurate. Now maybe they'll go back to watching real news programs and not propaganda programs posing as news programs, like on MSNBC or CNN (sans that idiot Dobbs) or NBC, CBS or ABC News. Read the NY Times or Washington Post. Watch the BBC world news service.

But avoid Fox at all costs.

"Real news" on MSNBC and CNN? The reason Fox is gaining audience share by the day is that they do report all the news that others the others don't want you to know. Senate resolution just passed that will strip federal funds from ACORN. Who but Fox has been reporting on them for months? Wake up.

If what you say is true, then what "people" want to know are lies to support their biases and prejudices. Doesn't say much for that kind of people, does it? They report news "others don't want you to know" because others won't report lies as news. Now if you would go to other news sources, your asinine assertion that only Fox has been reporting on the issue with ACORN is false. AP reported it--you do know what AP is, don't you--so it was in the LA Times, Politico.com, CBS News, AOL.com, MSNBC, and others. Would you like to go on? If you would bother to listen to real news, you wouldn't make such statements. The only difference is that these legitimate news organizations will give you facts, not propaganda, they won't spin it and lie like Fox will.

By the way: facts are only facts if they are true and the test for its truth is if is logical, verifiable and reliable. Fox does not do that. They lie. And if you choose to believe something without checking to see if it is true or not, then that is foolish. And if you spread the lies, you are a liar too.

OldFreddie, using your logic, cigarettes must be good for you because the tobacco industry has successfully managed to market them and has been efficacious in lobbying congress. Why, they're popular and congress buckles to their corporate pressure! So they must be telling the truth!

And you need to stop confusing and conflating ratings with accuracy. The most powerful bombastic liars and pedants find it easy to get good ratings. People who watch FOX News actually know LESS about the news than people who don't watch the news at all. FOX News tells outright lies blatantly and repeatedly, even after (and especially after) the lies have been debunked.

Derinaz' comment below is correct. Facts are not facts unless they are objectively verifiable. Falsehoods are not facts just because FOX News labels them as such.

Errr... I hate to tell you this, but ACORN doesn't get any funding from the government. They have sometimes been hired to do specific jobs for government agencies, but they don't get paid until the job os done (unlike Halliburton or KBR) and they aren't on any kind of permanent contract. Maybe you're confused because they also get hired by other organizations who receive government grants.

I would say that if Fox News reported that the Senate passed a resolution that will strip federal funds from ACORN, it means one of two things:
1) The Senate resolution is meaningless, because there are no federal funds to strip from ACORN, or
2) Fox News is lying.

What do they say, argon? What are you proving? I hope you're not one of those who think that because a majority of people do something, it automatically makes it right or true.

If you went to Nazi Germany in 1936 and asked them if Jews were inhuman, the vast majority would have said yes, but we know it is not true. Truth is not decided by a vote, reality is not determined just because a majority believes it to be true.

In fact, your numbers prove what I am saying: there is more distrust of news programs now because more people watch Fox and Fox is unreliable, racist, bigoted, lying propganda, not news.
