Product Placement

Guardian:

But while product placement is rife in film, British television programmes have long had to make up fictional products, such as pints of Newton & Ridley in Coronation Street's Rovers Return, or simply tape over the logos of real ones. That is all likely to change this week after a decision that is expected to allow commercial broadcasters to show sponsored products for the first time.

Does anybody REALLY buy something because they saw it in a tv show or movie? That's so lame.

They'll be sorrrrry....Reese'sPieces in E.T. was novel and funny, but 20 yrs later, it's just stupid. Nothing cool about seeing someone drink an actual Coke instead of a cola on film.

Sorry, LPC, but that's just silly. Real people don't drink "a cola". They drink a brand they like, so why not use a real brand instead of pretending that brands don't exist? Bottom line, if you don't like the taste of Coke, you're not going to drink it regularly; however, placements can at least prompt a viewer to try it once. And frankly, I'd rather have my favorite shows take money from sponsors, use brands in a natural way as part of the narrative and keep the show going, instead of taking the high road and potentially lose something good because it's too expensive to produce.

How's this for a product placement in an upcoming James Bond movie? Bond and his "Bond girl" outsmart their adversaries in Mexico by dressing up as bags of Ariel laundry detergent.

I guess there comes a time where a producer has to be creative when it comes to help footing the production bills.
