I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) went on Jimmy Fallon Monday night and while there was some serious talk, most of the interview stayed light. The host mocked the former presidential candidate for his lousy performance in an unaired clip from his appearance on "Saturday Night Live." And McCain recounted a brief "platonic" fling he had after graduating from the Naval Academy with an "entertainer" who called herself the "Flame of Florida."

I'm glad the post '08-prez campaign McCain is more like the pre-campaign McCain. While R's & Dems differ on domestic policy (to the Nth), when it comes to foreign policy, there's less daylight between the two parties. (Not that there really are two parties, but that's another discussion.)

The same phenomenon is at play across the economy, not just politics. As a B2B journalist I covered an area of agribusiness where farmers (producers) were at bitter odds with their customers, who are manufacturer-marketers (processors, y'know, like ADM in the true-life story behind the "Informant!" movie). They fought bitterly over the Agricultural Appropriations Bill. But when it came to exports -- the private-sector equivalent of foreign policy -- their views were one in the same. They kept their dirty laundry within the borders. McCain still does that, to his credit. It's just such a shame the Republican party has forgot that little nicety; we now have Dick Cheney spreading discord like a virus, Sarah Palin spouting-off in Hong Kong, and all manner of anti-intellectual claptrap spreading like a virus the world over.

All because the Republicans couldn't fix this election like they did in 2000 and 2004. No grand conclusions, just some observation and opinion.

"platonic" means a friendly relationship with no sex.

"Platonic" is an unintended outcome. It's when you get shut down before 3rd base. Since you didn't score, you can thereafter refer to the relationship as "platonic" so as to make your lack of success less embarrassing.

Any boy notice that McCain didn't have a "band of brothers" running around campaigning for him. You would think that after 5 years in a prison camp, McCain would have some buddies to stand up for him.

McCain should have been a stand-up comedian. He does have some really funny lines and they seem to flow out of his brain.

He's not a naturally serious person. Life is a game to him, always has been.

All things considered McCain is not a bad human being and a better than average senator. Yet I am convinced a McCain-Palin administration would have been an unmitigated disaster for this country. He simply does not have the skill set or the temperment for the presidency.
