NEW YORK — New York City Comptroller William Thompson Jr. has cruised to victory in the Democratic mayoral primary and will face billionaire incumbent Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

With 62 percent of precincts reporting, Thompson had about 69 percent of the vote. City Councilman Tony Avella of Queens had 22 percent.

The Democratic mayoral contest was a lonely race this year after Bloomberg announced he would run again.

Bloomberg had been barred from a third term but persuaded the City Council last year to change the term-limits law.

Thompson says now the real work begins.

He has raised about $6 million, while Bloomberg has already spent more than $40 million of his own money.

Bloomberg is not registered with a party and did not compete in a primary Tuesday.

That win was too easy. Don't fall asleep during the general.

No primary. Spend his own, not public, money. Manages to extend term limits. Very impressive. But eight years later, there's still no 9-11 memorial.

I'm for Bloomberg because he still has unfinished business in fully handing over the city to big developers.

Michael Bloomberg should be completely ashamed about the way he used his money and power to bully his way past the term-limits law--a law that New York City residents voted for in TWO REFERENDUMS. Bloomberg's end-around is the absolute DEFINITION of corruption. To all New Yorkers: Whatever you think about the job that Bloomberg has done as mayor (and if he's such an irreplaceable financial wizard, why are we in our current situation?), PLEASE vote him out for his role in the term-limits scandal. He's an egotistical bully and tyrant who's laughing at the citizens of New York City--as he put it when he was asked about a possible backlash from voters, "People do forget about things like this.'' If you like getting laughed at by rich, corrupt despots, then vote for Bloomberg. If you don't, then do the right thing: vote for anyone else.

Go Bill!!!

Oh and Huffpost, Doomberg may not be registered with a party but he's running on the Republican ticket and over 80 percent of his political donations have gone to Republican candidates so....you might as well brand him as what he acts like: a Republican.

good morning,
are you saying that Bloomberg will be officially running as a Republican on November?...would love him to do that instead of hiding behind the independent label...
I used to live in NYC (now in NJ) and no matter how good or bad of a mayor he has been, I totally despise what he did....changing the Term Limit law for his personal agenda??!!...isn't that what we call Dictatorship in other countries?
