What's Your Reaction?

Mary Travers, the great folk singer of Peter, Paul and Mary, died Wednesday afternoon at 72. The trio got together in 1961, and -- despite an 8 year gap from 1970 to 1978 -- they've been performing and recording albums together until now. Mary was passionate about the civil-rights and anti-war movements, and many of the groups songs -- and most famous performance venues such as the March on Washington in 1963 -- reflect that. Here, we give you some of the band's live performances on YouTube, through the years.

Thank you, Mary. I still remember the look you gave me when, during your concert in '63, as a five year-old, I couldn't sit still. Eyes of love, and yet piercing. Been a fan ever since. Their music lives on. Unique and unsurpassed.

Along with her fellow trio members, Paul Stookey and Peter Yarrow, Mary Travers helped make a card-carrying, liberal Democrat out of me, (for a time) with her beautiful smile, beautiful voice, and powerful lyrics about civil rights -- "an idea whose time had come." I was just a young guy back then, barely out of my teens, ripe for big ideas, something bigger than my daily grind, a cause I could grab onto and be lost in. What a benevolent hold they had on me. My favorite song remains "Jesus Met the Woman at the Well." It is a powerful anthem about the interchange between Jesus and a Canaanite woman whose multiple sexual liasons are noted by Jesus, much to the woman's surprise (Ms. Travers sings gloriously of the woman's amazement: "This Man, He must be a Prophet, He knows everything I've ever done!") .

So sad that Mary is gone. I take comfort in knowing that my young children love their music, and the music will live on as long as there's a song to sing and willing people to hear it. How bittersweet to drive through the darkness and hear them cheerfully singing to Where Have All the Flowers Gone, knowing that all too soon they will understand it.

I grew up with the music of Peter, Paul and Mary. I still love to sing their songs.
"Puff" was a favorite when I was in grade school.

Mary, you will be missed.

The first trip I made in my very first car (a VW Beetle) was to the Carter Baron Amphitheater near DC to hear PP&M. Listening to all their albums contributed to my becoming a singer-songwriter. Most recently Peter invited me to open the world peace rally at the Lincoln Memorial with my song, "Little Boys With Poison Toys", (just days before the start of the Iraq mess). During the finale Mary heard my harmonies through the stage monitors and quickly stepped across the stage, put her arm around me and brought me back to her mic where for that one beautiful moment I got to be a fourth member of Peter Paul and Mary. When I thanked her later she kissed me on the cheek and said, "No, thank YOU!" What a beautiful and gracious spirit has left us.

Mary Travers was the voice...........pure, strong and beautiful. She helped define the 60's and embodied the movement for peace, love and truth. She will be missed!

Her death makes me very sad. We saw Peter, Paul, and Mary every time they came to Houston. They were supposed to perform at The Galveston Grand, but Mary got sick. I looked for them every season after that to no avail. It seems like the end of an era of peace and civility. They were one band who sounded even better in person than on the sound stage.

The last time I saw Peter ,Paul and Mary was in Wolf Trap on Route 7 Virginia.

They are the best and lifted all of us into a spirit of care and Love.
I changed the word's over the year's . "The answer my friend is in the HEART'S of men".

Thank you Mary for all the Love. " And he shall dwell with us and we shall be his people and there shall be no tears anymore".

Our tear's are like river's of Love To-day. On that day His Love shall overwhelm. Good bye Mary Thank You.

This brings back fond memories. It also makes me feel sad and old tonight.

It does make one feel sad and old, but it also reminds me of how lucky I was to grow up in a time when music like theirs was fresh and new, a time when idealism about changing the world didn't seem out of our reach.

Fanned and faved. I too feel so sad, but I refuse to feel old...er, um...older than I already am. Just watching the videos made me feel younger and more hopeful once again. It is not so easy nowadays to maintain that hope, but I am not prepared to give up. Not yet. Good all over Mary (and Peter and Paul) and my heartfelt empathy to Mary's family and friends.
