Cammie Colin: 16 Year-Old Girl Bags 10-Foot Alligator With A Crossbow

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A 16-year-old girl has bagged a 10-foot alligator in a South Carolina swamp. In the middle of the night. With a crossbow. The State newspaper in Columbia reported that Cammie Colin won one of 1,000 lottery slots for the state's annual public alligator harvest. Hunters are required to use a crossbow or a harpoon.

Cammie was the only person in her group authorized to shoot the 353-pound gator. The Lexington resident was with a guide, her father, an uncle and her brother in an 18-foot boat early Sunday in the headwaters of Lake Marion.

They have 40 pounds of alligator steak in the freezer now.

Cammie says most of her teachers are using her new nickname, "Killer."

I'm a LIBERAL of the first water. And I feel that hunting for just the sport of it, is an atrocious act. But not if one is hunting to feed one's family. And before this economic crisis we're in is over, we may all own crossbows.

And one last thing: I bet that those 40 pounds of alligator steaks in her freezer right now are a hellava lot more nutritious and safe to eat than the force-fed, antibiotic-infused, E-coli-tainted beef we have to buy in the grocery stores these days.

Well, that Old Testament god didn't set a very good example, did he? Knocked off every member of every species of animal on earth save for a mating pair, for no reason at all. Instead of killing all the wildlife, why didn't he just whisk the bad people off the planet in some rapture program? You wonder why he bothered preserving the mating pairs, since he created the creatures in the first place. Maybe he couldn't locate their genomes, or something.
