Collecting, transporting, storing and getting rid of garbage is a costly and often daunting task for cities. Lynn Brown, a spokeswoman for Waste Management Inc., a company that runs both landfills and recycling centers nationwide and is helping to underwrite the tracking project with $300,000, said garbage moved through a vast network of sites run by multiple contractors, which makes it challenging to find the most efficient way to handle it.

Great concept. But I know already where the CA Bay area is trying to put their trash.
Wanted to share, a story you may not be aware of. Recology, a San Fran-based firm, charged with helping that city achieve a 0 footprint, is trying to ship 1million tons of bay area (not just SF) trash PER YEAR, via rail, for 95 YEARS to Winnemucca, NV.

This is non-recycleable trash inclusive of hazardous waste, projected to grow to the size of a 20 story building if they don't add more trash down the road. Maybe 25 jobs Recology says. This town is near some of the biggest gold producing mines in the country. Jobs, nothing. To add insult to injury, Recology offers a low hosting price. Economic offer, nothing. Enviornment risk, HUGE.

Sen Reid wrote the Gov of NV, Jim Gibbons and asked him to halt this via the EPA. No surprize, the Gov has explained in a form letter to many that he can't fix it. In the mean time, CA, brags about being 'green'.

Help stop the hypocracy. NV is NOT the US dump. Check the website: www.nevadansagainstgarbage.com

Write Reid (forget Gibbons, I can send you the form letter). Ask Reid to call Nancy, and say...hey, Nance...just knock that stuff off.

Thanks.

You mean it goes somewhere--in this reality? I always thought it went around some bend in spacetime into another dimension :)
