What's Your Reaction?
Fox News Ad

In this morning's Washington Post, on page A9, the Fox News Channel took out a full-page ad, chest-thumping about its coverage of this past weekend's Tea Party protests in Washington, DC (which were heavily promoted by Fox News). "How did, ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, and CNN miss this story?" the text reads. It makes one wonder: Did Fox's marketing department bother to check on its competitors' coverage before they made these claims?

The facts are these: It took me all of 30 seconds to open up TVEyes and search CNN and MSNBC for Tea Party coverage on Saturday, September 12. Here are the facts. By my rough count, on September 12, CNN ran no less than 14 reports on the Tea Party rally, beginning at approximately 7:00 a.m. During the same time period, MSNBC offered viewers four reports on the Tea Parties. This is substantially less coverage than that of Fox News, obviously, but they did provide one of the event's most iconic images:

In the local DC market, the Tea Parties also received coverage. CBS reported on the story during the six-o'clock and eleven-o'clock news broadcasts, NBC did the same during its six-o'clock and seven-o'clock broadcasts and ABC covered the Tea Parties in all three evening broadcasts. No one missed the story.

It's especially galling to see an advertisement claiming that ABC News "missed the story" -- and not just because ABC News Radio referenced the rallies in 69 separate broadcasts. As anyone who paid attention to the rally knows, one of the more interesting and important aspects of the larger Tea Party story was how ABC News got caught up in all the confusing crosstalk over the crowd size:

Conservative activists, who organized a march on the U.S. Capitol today in protest of the Obama administration's health care agenda and government spending, erroneously attributed reports on the size of the crowds to ABC News.

Matt Kibbe, president of FreedomWorks, the group that organized the event, said on stage at the rally Saturday that ABC News was reporting that 1 million to 1.5 million people were in attendance.

At no time did ABC News, or its affiliates, report a number anywhere near as large. ABCNews.com reported an approximate figure of 60,000 to 70,000 protesters, attributed to the Washington, D.C. fire department. In its reports, ABC News Radio described the crowd as "tens of thousands."

ABC News' Yunji de Nies described how flabbergasted her colleagues were and reported that Kibbe had to walk back his statement:

We at ABC News were baffled. Where were these numbers coming from? We checked with all reporters on the ground, and with all platforms (broadcast, radio, dot.com) but everyone had been sticking to reporting in the "tens of thousands." We contacted Freedom Works, which took nearly 24 hours to correct their mistake, but did so in this statement, from Kibbe himself:

"From the stage I cited ABC news estimating the crowd at the March on Washington at 1.5 million. I also said "with all due respect to our friends in mainstream media, we need our own independent head count. Trust but verify." With a dead IPhone, I had been shown tweets from a number of different folks behind the stage citing the ABC estimate. They didn't say it. I regret misrepresenting the network, as their coverage that day was fair and honest."

Story continues below

Seems to me that it was someone in Fox News' Marketing Department who missed the story.

Again, all of this takes mere seconds to look up. So it's hard to understand why Fox has an ad wondering "How did, ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, and CNN miss this story?" Unless by "miss," they meant to say: "not spend several hours fellating."

Its all about advertising. By accusing CNN of not covering the show, they ensure additional coverage and further hype.

Wow, who put the hot coal in your pants?

I have to admit I no longer watch CNN's left leaning reporting.
I think the last time I watched was the nearly 24 hr coverage
about the baby Jessica in the well in Midland,Texas nearly
22 years ago. Every story has a left, center and right. It depend's
on the ethics of the repoter of how it's reported.
'If it doesn't bleed, it doesn't lead!"

I think Rick missed the point that Fox is claiming that CNN missed the larger story, not just the resulting one day march. CNN's coverage of the tea party bus tour protesters, prior to the march, including the clip Rick shows in this piece, was laced with left leaning bias. I am not taking sides here, just calling it like I see it. Rick looks like an angry liberal, not a balanced reporter. He only delivers his own version of the truth here, even cutting off O'Reilly's full comment so we can't hear his whole point. I do remember CNN "promoting" rallies (anti-war / Million Man March) before they happend for other issues, without ridiculing the protesters. This was not the case this time.

Same tactic my ex uses. Falsely accuse someone and then criticize the ensuing reaction.

Great Job Rick!! You ripped Fox a new one. However, superficial coverage of a news story still doesn't count as coverage in my book. I miss the days when CNN was more visceral and actually delved deep into a story instead of giving us just the tip of the iceberg. Can you start telling us what's under the ocean as well?

haveyounodecency: Were they fully liars or was the coverage by CNN so minimal as to be easily missed and to accidentally appear non-existent?

You decide.

OK Great CNN covered the event. From the clips presented they didn't seem to go any more into depth than the Fox reporters did. Where was the coverage of Freedom Works? Where was the coverage of Fox pumping up the crowd? There was a story there but Fox was committed to hiding it and CNN didn't seem to see it.

Firstly, I find it very offensive that these loons were taking advantage of the date of 9/11 .. and they were, but of course it came from Fox, Beck.. as for the numbers, I would not believe anything that Fox would put out. Murdoch's newspapers were known for their Yeti, Big Foot, Aliens... so same old, same old.

Clearly the Fox ad writer was only semi-literate, so don't expect genuis from that source. Like, All Those Point Less, Capital Letters Separated Words and, Mis Placed Commas.

Jon Steward would tell you himself that his show's pretending news is more truthful than Fox News.

"Sly as a Fox!!!" There news channel was created to be the "Anti-Clinton Channel" or as they say "the Anti Slick Willie Channel." The rest is history.

In Pew Research Foundation surveys of voters, watchers of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert were the most informed Americans, and Fox viewers the most mistaken, about simple facts about public policy.
People don't turn to the Daily Show for information, although it is of higher quality than just about anything on Fox. They turn to it because they understand the difference between the truth and what the media, especially Fox News, is reporting. They enjoy seeing liars schooled.

I haven't seen the survey; however, it definitely makes sense. In order to tell whether or not something is funny, you have to be able to differentiate between truth and fiction.

That is interesting, because 6-12 months ago, the daily Show audience was the most ill informed based on a study/survey that included all of the cable news channels and the networks.

I wonder if the Pew thing was based only on the healthcare issues possibly.

Stewart only has to do 30 minutes a day...and to his credit most of their presentations are accurate.

Occasionally they take things at least partially out of context so that they can make fun of something.

December 1996, Jane Akre and her husband, Steve Wilson, were hired by FOX as a part of the Fox “Investigators” team at WTVT in Tampa Bay, Florida.to investigat bovine growth hormone (BGH), a controversial substance manufactured by Monsanto Corporation.

Fox executives and their attorneys wanted the reporters to use statements from Monsanto representatives that the reporters knew were false and to make other revisions to the story that were in direct conflict with the facts.

Fox editors then tried to force Akre and Wilson to continue to produce the distorted story.

Akre and Wilson refused and threatened to report Fox's actions to the FCC, they were fired.

In a stunningly narrow interpretation of FCC rules, the Florida Appeals court claimed that FCC policy against falsification of the news does not rise to the level of a "law, rule, or regulation," it was simply a "policy."

Therefore, it is up to the station whether or not it wants to report honestly.

During their appeal, FOX asserted that there are no written rules against distorting news in the media. They argued that, under the First Amendment, broadcasters have the right to lie or deliberately distort news reports on public airwaves.

Fox attorneys did not dispute Akre’s claim that they pressured her to broadcast a false story, they simply maintained that it was their right to do so.

Fox filed a series of motions seeking more than $1.7 million in trial fees and costs from Akre and Wilson.
