Delonte West

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. — Cleveland Cavaliers guard Delonte West was arrested Thursday after officers pulled him over for speeding on a motorcycle while carrying two loaded handguns and a loaded shotgun in a guitar case.

Prince George's County police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Reedy said Friday the Cleveland Cavaliers player was arrested about 10 p.m. Thursday.

Reedy said West was riding a Can-Am Spyder motorcycle north on the Capital Beltway in Upper Marlboro when he cut off an officer, who pulled him over.

Police said a handgun was found in his pocket, another in his pant leg and a shotgun in a guitar case strapped to his back.

Reedy said West "was very cooperative, there were no issues" during the incident.

The 26-year-old West, who lives in Brandywine, was charged with speeding and weapons counts. It is illegal to carry concealed weapons and to transport loaded guns in Maryland, according to police. Reedy said West was released on his own recognizance early Friday.

Cavaliers general manager Danny Ferry said the team was monitoring the situation.

"We have been in communication with Delonte and his family," Ferry said in a statement. "We are gathering more information and will not have further comment until the appropriate time."

Online court records did not list an attorney for West.

Last year, West left the Cavaliers' training camp to seek treatment for depression and a "mood disorder" he said he has battled his entire life. At the time, he said he was taking medication and attending therapy sessions. West said his mood problems date to his childhood.

West has said his mood swings seem to be most erratic when his life seems to be in order.

Cpl. Clinton Copeland, a Prince George's County police spokesman, said West was carrying a Beretta 9mm handgun, a Ruger .357 magnum handgun, and a Remington 870 shotgun. Copeland said the penalties West could face if convicted had not been determined.

What he needs is his teammates support and the support from family, friends, and fans.

I really get tired of people using casual mental difficulties like bi polar as excuses to act like fools. .................

West has battled 'mood disorders' his entire life. He missed time last year because of it. Mood disorders can entail depression and a whole host of other problems. This latest situation is scary in it's possibilities.

They said: "...the penalties West could face if convicted had not been determined."

Will that be 1 slap on the wrist or 2?

2 years is the minimum for a firearms violation.

I still remember the killer backcourt combination of Delonte West and Jameer Nelson at St. Joseph's.

Black people should get as much LEGAL guns as possible. The report didn't say if he had a license to carry. it's just said, it's illegal to transport loaded guns in Maryland. Where is the NRA to fight for this man's rights to bear arms?

He should have told the officers he was oing to an Obama speech...then they would've let him go....like all those other folks who had concealed weapons.

You may have noticed that none of the stories involving people openly carrying firearms to protests (I don't recall seeing any stories about people carrying concealed weapons) took place in Maryland. Maryland's laws are very strict with respect to firearms.

Is it me, or is it only black men that get arrested for carrying guns? Does the NRA ever come to their defense?

I'm glad they arrested this idi.ot. Now if there were a way to arrest every reprobate with one or two or three or more concealed handguns, or any guns, running around in traffic or walking on the streets. Feed him to M.V.'s dogs -- you know, the ones that survived

The guns are one thing, but he was stopped riding a Can Am Spyder? Holy Crap-now that's embarrassing. It's the motorcycle equivalent of riding one of those three-wheeled bicycles with the giant basket on the back that you see in retirement villages. You could be carrying a bazooka and would still have zero street cred riding one of those things.

Lebron needs to have a "serious talk" with this guy.

The headline reads "NBA star". The Cavaliers have one true star, LeBron James. The rest of the team are called role players.

He was the 39th best average scorer during the playoffs this year, and during the regular season the 124th best average scorer. In both of these stats, he trails James by a mile and is third on his own team behind Mo Williams, who also can't be counted as a star.

It helps if the headline is accurate.

If you play in the League your a star. I've had this debate before, its usually with people who have never played ball, I've had a couple of friends play in the NBA and they are phenomenal ballers, just unreal gifted athletes, you can't diminish his accomplishments even comparing him to all time greats like Lebron / Kobe / Jordan, its so hard to make the league in the first place, such a very small percentage actually can say they have.

I disagree. An NBA player was more than likely a star in college (or high school) but not all are stars at the NBA level.

How can you call an NBA player who averages single digits (like Kwame Brown) a star? You can call him a #1 overall pick, a former high school star, a rich guy, a tall guy but not a star.

Calling someone a star means they are a star at their current level of achievement not just that they cleared the NBA bar.

where are you good boys going with your guns in your pick up trucks you have always been allowed to carry your guns but you just can't understand why a black man would be carring a gun "wow" a lot of the civil rights leaders would probably be alive today had they been permitted to carry a gun during that horrific time in americas history if you're white you can carry a gun but if you're black don't try it how sad.

The guns in the pick-ups are not specifically designed to kill human beings. And they are legal.

What? What exactly is "designed to kill human beings"?

A .22 handgun with a suppressor is a highly desirable gun for a hitman, I'm not sure exactly what makes a gun "designed to kill human beings" but I'm not sure any of those in his possession would fall into that classification though all could kill humans.

Any rifle can kill a human. So can a bathtub full of water.

It's not legal to have a loaded gun on a gun rack in any state that I'm aware of. If you're going to carry a weapon on your person or in your vehicle, you need to do so lawfully.
