Incredible how many horrible muppets have come out to post about this article for no other purpose than to snub a man, his art, his life and his death, for apparently no reason whatsoever (racism, narrow minded ignorance, two dimensional tools, who knows what it is?). There was a time in the world when rock and roll was "just noise", but people did not listen to the narrow minded fools of the world and we are better for it. RIP Roc, a lot of people appreciate what you did. To all you evil robots...
Well, you're evil robots, enough said.
My first post didn't make it... Too long? Bad language?
Anyhow, this man was an inspiration to anyone who ever pursued the art of scratching.
A scratch DJ is a very different animal than your average superstar touring club DJ. This was about music, musicianship, skill, substance over image. The man was truly a master of his art, and will be missed.
R.I.P. Roc Raida...
"This was about music, musicianship, skill, substance over image."
huh? music? wicka-wicka-wicka...
"huh? music? wicka-wicka-wicka..."
Yes... Music. You obviously have never seen or heard scratch music. There's a lot more to it than "wicka-wicka-wicka". I suggest you check out youtube. Roc Raida and the X-Men would be a good place to start.
who is this? never heard of him.. what kind of Icon is this that you don't know who he is.. did he overdose like the last DJ?
evidently you do.. you posted a comment.. i still do not know who he is and I not care to google him.. i don't care..
"what kind of Icon is this that you don't know who he is"
You really think the universe revolves around you?
Discounting the contributions of urban minorities as frivolous, and unimportant because you hate or fear what you don't understand is the newest form of racism. Hip Hop gave birth to rap and embraced R&B allowing it to exude its influence within hip hop's drum beat driven environment. The exponential growth of hip hop and all that it umbrellas, opted artist such as justin timberlake and robin thick to be understood as R&B artist and not pop because not only was it more expressive vocally but because it was also popular and marketable. The word bling which was birthed from rap is now in the dictionary and is used across different socioeconomic levels from flat bush to rodeo drive. Hip hop also influences the way dancers move in your favorite Britney Spears or Christina Ag video. And one would be hard pressed to find a catwalk that does not incorporate or imitate urban fashion wear and trends. So to marginalize hip hop as being anything but the dominant culture that exists globally is wrong, ignorant, and speaks of a deep seeded often subconscious agenda to either trivialize or divorce urban minorities from their weight in the world.
well said.
Well spoken. . . and let us not forget that many forms of what people call "Pop" music is nothing more than a water down version of R&B.
yep
much respect and thoughts are with his family and friends.
i saw him during a show in LA back in 98 with the dilated peoples and some other great artists.
he was a very talented cat and his work with the xcecutioners was the first time i saw a group of DJs in the forefront.
dude was a great talent.
He was very young.
Sad day in music. Roc Raida was one of the best and he had more to contribute.
Yeah I agree, this is like TMZ posting things about actors no one has ever heard of. R.I.P Jam Master Jay
Jay-Z would of been nice to hear a little shout out on HBO to all the Giants whose shoulders you stand on...
Man, that really sucks. I'm sure plenty of people on this board never heard of this dude but believe me when I tell you that he was one of the best at what de did. He really contributed alot to rap, hip-hop, and urban music in general. I've seen him spin live like 5 or 6 times live and he really was one of the best behind a couple of Technics 1200's and a crate of records. Roc Raida was just ridiculous plain and simple and if you don't believe me, look it up.
I remember like it was yesterday being 15 and seeing the 1997 DMC Finals at Irving Plaza in NYC. Lord Finesse hosted and there were a bunch of opening acts like Godfather Don with Scaramanga, Non-Phixion the Beat Junkies, breakdancing crews and a ton of other great acts. The group that really stuck out to me was the X-Ecutioners consisting of Roc-Raida, Rob Swift, Mista Sinista, and Total Eclipse. Their act was just phenomenal and they destroyed that place that night.
R.I.P. Roc-Raida and thanks for posting this HuffPo.
What happened to my post lamenting the great loss of this iconic artist?
I had replies, and everything!
Now it's gone - just like Roc...
Stop the presses a DJ died!!!!!
Your bio lists you as having "more than a smattering of integrity". I don't think you're demonstrating that.
A DJ that YOU obviously knew nothing about so therefore he should be of no significance to anyone else!
How i.g.no.rant!!
R.I.P Roc Raida...
