Political Wire:

Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R), facing a tough primary challenge from Sen. Kay Baily Hutchison (R), left many puzzled when he declared his state was recession proof.

Said Perry: "As a matter of fact ... someone had put a report out that the first state that's coming out of the recession is going to be the state of Texas ... I said, 'We're in one?'"

In which the Republicans learn just how small a base "the rich" are.

This man is SUCH an embarrassment to our state. His own home "wide place in the road" doesn't even like him anymore.

Amen! But Kay isn't much of a choice either! It like choosing between a rock(head) and a hard place. How much stupidity can one state contain?

Doesn't Rick Perry know that his primary responsibility is to create fear in his constituency? How else will government grow and become more powerful?

Last time I was in Austin, in 2000, it looked like a disaster, and that was compared to Denver! I shudder to think what it looks like now. I'm guessing Perry has no idea what a "recession" is, since all the traffic lights etc. are already broken.

Perry is a trainwreck, but I would like to know this: What will happen to all the soldiers that will come home from the war looking for jobs? We have tens of thousands of soldiers that will eventually come home to ????? That is something that I think about often, will our soldiers have jobs when they come home? Can they afford to stay in their homes? How many soldiers will the DOD decide to keep or release when that many are no longer needed after these horrific wars?

For the past eight years New York City and Washington, D.C. have been pillaged to the benefit of Texas i.e. Houston, Dallas and San Antone. Brooks army hospital was exemplified and Walter Reed was vilified. A clear-cut operation to shift financial and political power and influence. Another example is Brooks army hospital was exemplified while Walter Reed was vilified. There was a sentiment there espousing Texas as the real center of the American system not NYC and DC.

Dallas Morning News is citing a new report that 49.5% of Texans have health insurance on the job. That means 50.5% of Texans do not. That doesn't mean that those 50.5% are not working either. Texas has dropped to near dead last in the US.

But ask Governor Perry and Texas is doing just fine.

50% of Texans are unemployed with no insurance?

Uh, I don't think so. Try not pulling numbers out of thin air.

Texas's GDP from 2007 to 2008 grew 2% in a recession year to 1.2 billion.

He didn't say that 50% of Texas is unemployed, he said that 50% do not have health insurance on the job. Many of those may be unemployed, but most are almost certainly employed without health insurance through their employer, which you will note, he SAID.

Should Texas secede or be expelled

Let us make a deal

Those that want to be responsible for themselves with minimal govt but believe in charity can all move to Texas.

The Texans that want the federal govt to be their parents or god and want to be taken care of from cradle to grave can move out of TX.

We will even take Oklahoma. If you want, even Arkansas and Louisiana (same deal applies)

What a win win deal

As a guy that grew up on a farm and started paying Social Security at age twelve, forty-four years ago, this type of conservative dribble really frosts my ar-.se. Like they're the only one's that have ever put in a days work. There's an expression that comes to mind, but I can't use it here.

To be fair - NPR just did a week long report on Houston, and even they said the economy in Texas has been much better than the rest of the country. Their housing market never had the dramatic rise and then drop in prices, so its been stable.

I live in Houston and feel fortunate that I just got a new job. But this city is feeling the pain too. Slowdown in jobs, layoffs, lower pay, depressed home prices, and middle aged workers being let go.
It's still not as bad as other areas, though. I can't wait till the economy improves for everybody in the country.
