I hate to say it, but Deeds is pursuing a losing strategy.

By the election, continued references to the thesis will turn to "flogging a dead horse" as it fades from public interest. McDonnell's current lifestyle and family background belie most of the thesis, anyway, even if one felt the thesis bore heavily on his character at one time.

No one votes for one candidate because the other candidate showed poor character more than a decade ago. People vote FOR candidates, not against them.

Deeds had better start going positive, and at least pretending to stay above the "cheap shot," while offering something substantial to voters. Otherwise, he's going to lose.

I'm in AZ, but I have contributed to Deeds on principle. We need to have Dems in office, and we need to keep a positive and upbeat reputation as being "winners." It helps overall to have Dems "win" -- it keeps the message alive that the GOP is out of touch and not coming back any time soon (they would have to be reborn and shed their religious conservatives and regain their secular conservatives; which I do not see happening any time soon--that southern strategy was a huge mistake, the votes they gained made the Party vulnerable to a takeover by those "values" voters, and now they cannot shake them).

McDonnell is trying to position himself as just having done an academic exercise (at an evangelical college) and distance himself from what he wrote (Let's not forget "fornicato­rs".). However, this attempt to distance himself doesn't work in a number of ways:
1. Does this mean he wrote a thesis he doesn't believe in? If so, why should we trust what he says NOW?
2. His record since then has not helped women in the workforce.
3. He trots out his wife and daughter as proof that he supports working women. Where's the legislation to support ALL working women, not just "atta girl" at home?

I think we are in the middle of a paradigm shift of political activism. People just aren't going to stand by and let things happen to them anymore. When someone like McDonnell finally shows his "true" colors, people notice and fight back. Politicians just aren't able to sweep these kinds of things under the rug anymore or able to divert the attention. It is heartening to see that many politcally conscious people are sitting up and taking notice - much to the detriment of these foolish politicans who have more arrogance than is deserved.
