techPresident:

As President, Obama could be using the internet medium in innovative ways, but so far, whatever understanding of online media the Obama team once demonstrated during the presidential campaign appears to have been subsumed by more cautious and traditional media thinking now. His strategists' comments about yesterday's TV blitz shows how much they've retreated into a purely "broadcast" mentality.

Obama is smart to shore up his ties to old media. He's got plenty of new media support, but nobody wants to see the Grey Lady have to sell out to Rupert Murdoch or to borrow against their building. Also, the old broadcast giants are redeemable and need to continue as respected American media brands. With dear old Walter Cronkite having passed away, Dan Rather is the heir-apparent for CBS. PBS needs to come back with the PBS branding and understand that Bill Moyers is their point-man. Viva old media. Viva Barack Obama.

The difference is that President Obama is now part of the Establishment. He's the Man now. Nobody wants to watch videos from the Man's YouTube page. They want to watch them from the guy who thinks he can knock the Man out of the ring. So forget YouTube. That's over. People who want to hear from the Man will turn on the TV, not the computer. He's the Man, and he ought to embrace that and be the best Man he can be. That's why we hired him.
