With the sold-out Great American Beer Festival just around the corner and Oktoberfest season in full swing, it's officially beer drinking season.

Last weekend, Denver mayor John Hickenlooper kicked off the inaugural Denver Beer Fest, a 10-day celebration of all things beer. The festival includes beer tastings and events around the city, and is bookended by two weekends of Oktoberfest celebrations and the Great American Beer Festival this weekend.

The state's largest microbrewery in Fort Collins brews such favorites as Fat Tire, Skinny Dip, Sunshine Wheat, Mothership Wit and 1554.

According to Colorado.com Denver is first in the nation for per capita beer production and second in the nation for number of total breweries in a city.

In a Denver Business Journal article Hickenlooper bragged about Denver's beer reputation.

"Denver is slowly but surely passing Munich -- passing Munich! -- as the center of beer," Hickenlooper said of the famed German brewing city at a news conference on Thursday. "We hope that one day they refer to Munich as the Denver of Europe."
