NEW YORK — Herschel Walker is starting a new career in mixed martial arts.

The 47-year-old former NFL running back said Monday that he has signed a multi-fight contract with promoter Strikeforce. Walker will begin a 12-week training camp next month in San Jose, Calif.

The 1982 Heisman Trophy winner already holds a fifth-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do.

Nobody should be starting a mixed martial arts career at age 47. Obviously that Cowboys money is gone. I personally would rather not see him go out this way. I hope his fighting debut isn't too humiliating.

Is he desperate for money at 47 years old?

47 is too old to try to make a living trying to knock someone out and trying not to be knocked out. Why mar his legacy as one of the most accomplished running backs of all time.

I saw no mention in the article of his mental illness revealed in 2008.

I saw this story in this morning's paper and just sighed... It said he wanted to prove he's the greatest athlete of all time and I was pretty disappointed in his wanting to prove it at 47. He's not real old and he is in great shape but he must really need to hear a lot of adulation to take it to this length. Why not do what Magic or Jordan did, or Aikman or Starr or any number of other famous athletes, and just be successful at a business rather than killing yourself trying to prove something that isn't provable?

Not sure how well he'll fight but I'm certain he'll be in the best shape possible. The dude was a fitness freak back in the day. Most likely he'll be a formidable opponent if he kept doing his workout routine in retirement.
