Lily Allen

Telegraph:

The singer has set up new site idontwanttochangetheworld.blogspot.com on which she posts messages from prominent supporters of her cause.

It follows last week's outburst against file-sharing which she said was a "disaster" for emerging artists "as it's making it harder and harder for new acts to emerge".

Boo frickity hoo. If you don’t want to owe a record label whatever money they decide it was worth to create you out of nothing, don’t enter a LEGALLY BINDING CONTRACT with them - worked for me!

All the sanctimonious filibustering about standing up for the rights of other musicians is disingenuous. We know this because Lily Allen has made a career out of bagging out other musicians. Musicians far more influential and accomplished than she could ever be (and I’m implying that she’s a musician only because I’m too drunk to rephrase this sentence - not too drunk to write this disclaimer, though).

Long story short: some inane tart whose music sucks succeeded in not falling out of character, by ranting without class or grace about the evils of the music industry, musicians, and the public. Enjoy dying alone with your terrible music.

Cold and alone. Hey, I think I feel a song coming on!

Considering that Lily Allen emerged as a star in the age of file-sharing, it is hard for me to understand what her basis is for saying: "it's making it harder and harder for new acts to emerge".

Pretty clearly, file-sharing makes it easier - much easier - for new artists to have their music distributed. Just as clearly, it makes it harder - much harder - for record company marketing departments to control what we listen to.

Who in their right mind would waste bandwidth on a Lily Allen album?

Here is an interesting article related to this: http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20090921/0527456270.shtml

It notes how Lily Allen copied an article from TechDirt without giving any credit or linking to the original. Apparently she only sees copyright infringement as being bad when it isn't her doing the infringing.

I have no use for hypocrites.

You can't have it both ways. Either artists agree with ISPs to allow their music to be given away, or they don't. There is greater regulation needed, but basically the artists need to understand most people will take the candy for free. Most people can't be bothered with the time it takes to learn about how you dismantle an art form because greed oversteps their ethics. Music is an organic art form. It takes many elements to take it from infancy to maturity. The public loves to consume it, some sip it like wine and others gorge like pigs. the point is artists, record companies, and governments need to eliminate the mass file sharing trend with real punishments or face downsizing of the likes no one ever thought of. I value the work of great musicians who give their lives to create their art. Anyone who thinks its for the sole benefit of thievery is an idiot.
