Dr. Sanjay Gupta Had H1N1: "The Sickest I Have Ever Been"

It is worth pointing out the irony of a medical reporter getting influenza type A, which was then ultimately confirmed as H1N1. (The term swine flu is a misnomer, as this strain is made up of several different components, including swine, but also avian parts.) It really didn't matter if I got tested, as my doctor told me. It was the only flu strain circulating and I had it, and so did Scottie. We both had high fevers, the lack of appetite, terrible sinus congestion, body aches, and yes -- that hacking, come out of the blue.

I am not someone who gets sick, really ever. And this was the sickest I have ever been.

I contracted H1N1 in early June here in Los Angeles. I was hospitalized for 4 1/2 days. My fever hovered around 104.5 for the entire time and even a week later was not below 100. I can say without question that I too, "have never been sicker."

Listen up: Do not get this virus. It is FAR, FAR WORSE than anything you could possibly imagine. The agony is not anything you want to experience. Get the vaccines. Any risk is war outweighed by the immunity from this horrible virus.

So they couldn't test him for it? Figures since there are over 20 strains of H1N1 in the U.S. all the time every year. Why is this all of the sudden an epidemic and every virus is diagnosed as H1N1 even though they don't test for it? I must have had this horrible epidemic multiple times in my life why didn't anyone mention it then?? Does anyone get diagnosed as just having a flu virus now??? doubt it... every just gets told "you got the swine flu, it's crazy everyone is getting it, don't know how to stop it".... I hope people use more common sense than to believe this stuff.

We both have bronchitis from this nasty flu that is going around in our school district. We both work in education so it is kind of hard to avoid kids that are sick. Can you take the H1N1 vaccine if you have had a regular flu shot? I understand that the H1N1 vaccine will be ready in the late Fall. Just wondering. Does anyone out here know?

Yes. You can and should get both immunizations. I have gotten my "regular" flu shot and plan to get immunized against H1N1 when it is available. I will do the same for my children, ages 16 and 20.

Folks....H1N1 is going to be here until we achieve "herd immunity"... that means that a majority of people need to have either had it or have been vaccinated before it slows down. The H1N1 vaccine is now delayed until November.

The truth is that when it is all said and done more people will have had it than not. So don't laugh...you may be next!

H1N1 has always been here for as long as we've known about viruses... there are over 20 strains of it at any given time, so which one are we suppose to vaccinate against?

Sometimes what people don't say is more important than what they say. Dr. Gupta's first hand account is many hundreds of words long. But nowhere does he mention the word "vaccine", such as in, "... in hindsight I wish I had used the vaccine." He says it's just like regular flu only much worse Sort of a a super-flu.

My 6yo had the same flu two weeks ago. The coughing fits are unreal and I was worried about her. I placed a call to her doctor and was told there was nothing they could do for her. I bought the best over-the-counter cough syrups and they didn't help at all. The only medicine that allowed her to get an rest at all was the children's melt-away tylanol. The fever broke after the 4th day, but the cough persisted through the week. She's better now, but even after two weeks there are sporadic remnants of the cough.
