What's Your Reaction?
Obama

BEN FELLER, Associated Press

UNITED NATIONS — President Barack Obama exhorted world leaders on Wednesday to step up and do their part in tackling global challenges in promoting security and prosperity rather than waiting for America to do it alone.

"The people of the world want change," Obama said in his first address to the U.N. General Assembly. "They will not long tolerate those who are on the wrong side of history."

In an era where fast-moving technology binds people across borders and old divides, Obama called for "a new era of engagement based on mutual interest and mutual respect."

Obama said he will never apologize for defending U.S. interests. But he sought to dispel what he said has become "an almost reflexive anti-Americanism" that has swept the globe.

To do so, Obama offered a litany of policy changes and actions his administration had undertaken during his first nine months in office, with the overarching message that the United States has no interest in a go-it-alone stance and instead wants to act as an equal partner with others on the world stage.

"Those who used to chastise America for acting alone in the world cannot now stand by and wait for America to solve the world's problems alone," Obama said in an address that carried a remarkably blunt tone.

"The time has come for the world to move in a new direction," Obama said. "Our work must begin now."

Story continues below

"In an era where our destiny is shared, power is no longer a zero-sum game," Obama said. "No world order that elevates one nation or group of people over another will succeed. That is the future America wants."

He spoke to a packed chamber at the United Nations, receiving applause when he entered from even the likes of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad did not join in the applause. Throughout Obama's remarks, the president received polite applause several times.

Obama called on fellow leaders to help bring about a nuclear weapons-free world, to increase security from terrorists and promote peace between Israelis and Palestinians, to tackle climate change and to create more economic opportunity.

He said that Iran and North Korea "must be held accountable" if they continue to put their pursuit of nuclear weapons ahead of international security.

"The world must stand together to demonstrate that international law is not an empty promise and that treaties will be enforced."

Obama has said the door is open to Iran to discuss the issue, but that U.S. patience is not limitless. He has taken the same position with respect to the reclusive communist regime in North Korea.

On the warming planet, he said "the danger posed by climate change cannot be denied – and our responsibility to meet it must not be deferred."

The president said "this is why the days when America dragged its feet on this issue are over." He said he understood the temptation of nations to put economic recovery from recession ahead of work to address climate change, but said that must not be allowed to happen.

No one is listening. The leader of the free world is Benjamin Netanyahu. You have abdicated your status as an important person - Apologizer in Chief.

I haven't the slightest doubt in my mind, that he's one of our best and brightest presidents, and America is lucky to have him as a president - at least in terms of his intentions. His problems stem from two areas: that he is dealing with the worst kind of psychotic and fanatic ideologues, from the extreme right-wing of the Republican Party, who messed, ever so craftily, with their lies and fabrications, with the minds of many simple, uninformed, scared and vulnerable people. He chose, which I believe to be a mistake, to deal with his adversaries with class, grace, logic and facts, and that just isn't good enough when you deal with people like that, who would stop at nothing to destroy his presidency. His second problem was that he took on Israel and its formidable lobbyists in Washington, that scare the hell out of just about every US politician, and it's, sadly and as expected if you know how things are done in Washington, turning out to be a losing battle that even the POTUS can't do any thing about in terms of getting Israel to listen to the voice of reason and do what's right, after all the wrong it's done. How sad and weird it is that the greatest superpower of the world stands impotent and helpless in front of a tiny bully of a country like Israel, who, in fact and ironically, owes its very existence and survival to the US.

After today's dog and pony show, I'm more convinced than ever about the health of this man. I've long observed, based on Obama's behavior and presentation, that he was truly narcissistic. This, is an interesting read:

Yet you continue to listen to all of his speeches, watch his appearances and read everything about him. That says a whole lot more about you.

What a refreshing speech! Living in Europe, at long last, I've seen a President, who isn't afraid to demand that our allies in the world step up to the plate and to admit that we don't intend to pursue unilateral policy in international affairs. I've long been in favour of ending our participation in NATO, especially since the EU were making noises a couple of years ago about a Pan-European army. Good. We should monitor situations around the world, but look after our own domestic situation first.

I'm grateful that we have a Prez who is at least attempts to right some of the wrongs that has been done in our name, without our knowledge nor consent....and i'm oh so sorry for the innocent people who have paid the ultimate price.

I think you should explain your comment. It's easy to come up with something that you think sounds catchy, but when it comes to trying to make a point based on rationality and logic, you're totally lacking. Not buying it at all!

Inspirational speech. Full of grandeur, confidence, and power. It makes my heart soar. I hope that this country may be worthy of him. I cannot understand the mean, often vicious, often stupid comments I have been reading in reaction to this glorious piece of oratory, when for the first time for a long time I have felt proud to be an American.

Inspirational speech. Obama has a vision; it is a positive, ethical, and democratic outlook that makes my heart soar. The very fact that he can put together this combination of dignity, confidence, and power is, for the first time, in a long time, a source of pride for this country, both at home and abroad. I cannot understand the mean-spirited, often stupid, comments that I've read in reaction to a real piece of oratory. May we be worthy of him.

Either Mr. Obama is naive, or he is a .......

How many times have you heard Russia or China say their own country should be at the same level wirh other countries? or the leaders of Russia or China put their own country down?

Is like going to your new school and handing your lunch to the bullies in the playground, they clap at you and tell you well done... and you think they are your friends and will do what you ask them, just because you "appase" to them.....when you just gave up your bargaining chips to a bunch of people who understand how weak you are.

Like Gerald warner will say....
"Looked at one way, The United Nations has been the largest crime syndicate on earth. A founding member of its Security Council, the former Soviet Union, had 20 million murders to its credit. This was dwarfed in 1971 when Red China, still benevolently ruled by Chairman Mao, joined, with 65 million deaths on its hands. In that environment, North Korea, with its puny 2 million murders, seemed almost a liberal democracy. Not only are mass-murdering dictatorships freely admitted, but the UN displays a sense of humour in allocating them internal responsibilities.

Thus, Cuba (16,000 summary executions, 100,000 political prisoners) has repeatedly been elected to the UN Human Rights Commission. In 2003, Libya was elected to chair the Commission..."

I am sure Mr. Obama is going to convince them to play nice.

What you want to call American leadership in the world was never anything close. America remains to date, the only country on the face of the Earth to use nuclear weapons upon innocent civilian populations. America may have seemed at the time to have won the last world war but nothing could be further from the truth. The importation of thousands of Nazi war criminals into America society the beginning of the hellish pandemic of drugs, mass experimentation on medical subjects, [right out in the open no less] civil struggles, boom and bust economies, a miltary industrial complex responsible for billions of lives tortured and lost, and the rise of this new neo-con fascism.

Make no mistake about it, democracy was compromised and undermined by operatives of a devils cult who still glory in the death of millions, whose patriotism demands the blood of young men and women, who trample on and rob the elderly, who have developed the culture of death and human misery that has no end of thirst for blood. It has to end now or our species will end. We have to root them out and hold them accountable or we will be charged by history, a history silent of human voices, with being their accomplices because we were too cowardly to act.

More ignorantGOPtalkingpoints. Yawnnnnnnnnn! You anti-Obama crybabies make me laugh. You complain about his many speeches and appearances, yet you are always there with bated breath waiting for him to speak. Cave men used to walk around wearing animal fur carrying clubs. Something happened along the way. Mankind progressed. The Vikings used to sail the seas raiding other territories. Something happened. The world used to be full of Kings, Queens, Emperors and others who ruled. Something happened.

Hellooo why not kill two birds with one stone and create jobs/dispense money for replanting and replenishing the planet like a man in India is doing? Why is it so complicated?

Great? Based on what criteria? Same weaknesses, same need to invest in his own legacy, and an apologist for America. Speaking on the same day as crazed leader of Iran, he legitimized these thugs. He is shallow, supercilious and soul less. Dictators of a feather, flock together. Obama has weakened our position, has no real grasp on the complexities of Islamic fascism, and worse, can't support this countries ally, Israel! Obama has made a serious mistake. History will reveal how his continued blunders jeopardize this world! Where is the support for Israel?
