Patriot Act Changes: Congress Weighs Extension, Changes

Reporting from Washington - The Patriot Act -- a favorite tool in the George W. Bush administration's fight against terrorism -- may be renamed later this year as the Justice Act. But the law itself, including its controversial provisions that gave FBI agents more leeway to search computers and bank records, is likely to survive, albeit with some changes to limit who can be searched.

The whole damn law should be repealed. How many high profile "terrorists" have we caught as a result of this crap called the Patriot Act? After 9/11, the Bush Admin "smartly" (in their position) took advantage of the country's collective short sightedness and passed this crap. That was bad, but what's even worse is people possessing knowledge of how simple civil liberties have been lost to this bill, are not doing anything to severely limit its reach or repeal it altogether. The existing laws prior to this worked just fine. 9/11 didn't happen because of a lack of a law like the Patriot Act. We have facts that say some people did know about a plot to attack the USA prior to the day, and it was ignored, or pushed aside, or whatever you'd like to call it. In the hysteria after 9/11, Bush could have sold water to a well and the majority of people would have fell for it, which they did. So sad.
