As long as Wall Street and big oil control the government, there will be no change in the dismantling of the manufacturing base. In case you have not noticed, Summers and Wall Street are fixated on "free trade" even when they have to lie about China manipulating their currency for a competitive advantage (Geithner recently calimed China currency was not manipulated). Even the cash for clunkers money is going mostly to subsidise foreign imports. The Republicans attacked GM and Chrysler on their 1000 radio stations and alienated many buyers. The Democratic side did not defend our auto industry because they chose to close ranks and support the Obama car czar. Now GM and Chrysler are forced to compete against foreign auto makers unbder the most unfavorable conditions. The cash for clunkers money must go to the higher mpg vehicles which favors the foreign cars (They designed for their home market where gas has been high priced and thus they carry fuel efficient lineups. Whereas our companies catered to the SUV crowd which stopped buying when gas was artificially bid up in price by unregulated oil speculators on Wall Street. Given a few years warning on gas prices, GM would have made fuel efficient cars also.

Now Toyota is moving Corolla manufacturing to Canada because their public health care will save over $1000 per car.

How does "big oil control the government", and what does big oil have to do with the dismantling of the manufacturing base?

If I was Toyota...I'd put a real quick deadline on receiving the money from California. No money ? Close the plant a couple of months earlier than currently planned.

Oh please, foreign automakers get plenty of subsidies from the federal government. Hey Toyota, use your own damn money! It would probably be our taxpayer money anyway...

The fed is playing in re inflating the housing & finance bubble while the public willingly lets it happen (not that we could stop if if we wanted to). We're all too busy getting rich with stocks while the Wall Street crooks resume their treachery knowing they will get bailed out yet again.

good articles 4 slow news day; http://www.iamned.com

The lack of any finance or heath care reform is appalling

GM is the one that decided to leave the NUMMI joint venture. Why isn't anyone asking about GM's departure from a facility that was one of the company's most productive plants? Toyota was clear when they announced the plant closing. They simply didn't have enough work to keep the plant open. NUMMI is owed the money and the State of California entered into a "contract for services" so they should pay it. A deal is a deal.

The reason NUMMI is closing is simple. GM bailed on its half and it is the only Toyota plant in the US under a UAW contract. Toyota would rather build capacity elsewhere and have the same labor model everywhere in the country.
