USA Today:

A search of the agency's main index of the subjects of FBI investigations found some records tied to Cronkite's name were destroyed in October 2007, the FBI said in response to a Freedom of Information Act request by USA TODAY. Cronkite's death in July at age 92 made any FBI files about him available for release under the federal law.

Those records probably were accounts of investigations of the revered journalist and anchorman -- undoubtedly questioning whether he was a "communist sympathizer" for having called the Vietnam War a stalemate -- which would have become an embarrassment to the FBI. I imagine this is but a tiny example, in the context of the FBI's spying on thousands of innocent Americans who protested against the war. This era of Big Brother government abuse will live in infamy, along with J. Edgar Hoover's reign and the HUAC investigations conducted by Sen. McCarthy (aided by Ronald Reagan).

Who destroyed the "video" and the "flight recorder box" Dan Rather refers to here?

I was about to comment that and saw you already did it. I too wonder if there was stuff about Bohemian Grove there too. Something related to Bush and Cheney or maybe old Kissinger and Rockefeller crimes. Bohemian Grove is some pretty sick stuff...especially the child prostitution. Even Nick Bryant is writing about it now in The Franklin Scandal. This needs to be heard more than just a short blip in The NY Times.

You can bet that whatever was destroyed involved FBI complicity in something illegal. This is what we have come to expect from the FBI, the CIA and anyone else in gov that oversteps the law. A coverup, a claim of "inadvertant dedstruction" and the admonishment that an investigation and accounting would harm "morale" beyond repair....

pathetic.

Didn't Cronkite have some unkind things to say about the bushies? For what other reason would the fbi spy on someone like Cronkite?
I was going to say something about him being too old to present much of a domestic danger, but then I remembered the man at the museum.

The records were probably from J Edgar Hoovers time.

And Richard Nixon's of course.

Wouldn't put it past LBJ for that matter.

This should give a warm and fuzzy feeling.

Mormon Database Experts To Help FBI Track Terrorists
The FBI is consulting LDS Church computer experts who manage the huge genealogy databases to help rebuild the bureau's outdated information system. Officials say repeated failures by the FBI system have hindered some of the bureau's most important investigations in recent years, including the probe into the September 11 terrorist attacks.

"The FBI's troubled information management systems are likely to have a continuing negative impact on its ability to properly investigate crimes," says Justice Department Inspector General Glenn Fine. "The FBI has both a paper and an electronic management system in place, neither of which is reliable."

The FBI has begun addressing its problems in managing and analyzing the mass of information it gathers in investigations. As part of that effort, Mormon officials are providing advice for developing name-recognition programs that would assist authorities in finding and tracking suspects.

There are more details available in a very interesting story about this in the 22 March 2002 edition of the Salt Lake Tribune.

I was looking for the article, but as recalled the man was eventually hired by the FBI to be over their computer files.

That is not necessarily a bad thing. Personally I want FBI records concerning terrorists in good order. The fact that they were not led directly to 9/11.

But the timing of this destruction is very curious. 2007?

After your computer expert was on board.

Wow, more obstruction of justice during the Bush years.

Why is nobody surprised? Think it might have something to do with Cheney's paper shredders in the Reagan Library?

What the hell does the Federal Reserve have to do with whatever the FBI wanted to hide that had to do with Cronkite?
