Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi's 96-minute speech at the United Nations General Assembly Wednesday has been called "rambling," "long" and "incoherent". He's mocked and reviled in the United States, but his speech was met with some applause at the UN. Are any of his arguments worthwhile, or were they all just hogwash?

Iraq War Investigation

Muammer Gaddafi argued for an investigation into the Iraq war. He said: "The Iraqi war was the mother of all evils. Why did we invade? This should be investigated. It was a violation of the U.N. charter, without any justification."

Say, this man was a world pariah 20 years ago? Proof positive that diplomacy and patience can trump any glory of war.

I have read from United Kingdom to the United States, journalists that are so jaded by their own rhetoric that they forgot to report facts. Terrorism is terrorism if it is a state military action like in Iraq or a non state group like the Al Quaeda. The only thing that has been tossed around against Gadaffi is the lockerbee bombing, which was a terrorist act, and should never have happened. However, what drove him to finance that dastard act is fast forgotten! The United States bombed his palace and killed his little girl about two years before the lockerbee bombing. It was a retaliation against the US terror attack. US was guilty so was Libya for all their actions, as all wars where justice is not served is terrorism.
However, Gadaffi paid or compensated his victim's family 10million dollars each. How much as the United State government paid for the iraqis innocent dead? How much? Nada or a couple of thousand of dollars. Since dollars represent justice in our society as it is today, Gadaffi has done most to get justice or remuneration for his victims....i think US government should take his lead in that regard.

Gaddafi talked about the lopsidedness of the United Nations, which gives five permanent members of the Security Council more power than the all the other nations that make up the UN. He said the Security Council should be a platform that “implement(ed) the will of the General Assembly.” He said that either the body needed to be expanded to make it more representative or that the veto power of the five permanent members should be abolished. He said that smaller countries were treated as "second class, despised" nations.

Gaddafi said that the UN has not provided security for the world since its establishment but has rather provided the world with "terror and sanctions." “Sixty-five wars broke out after the establishment of the UN and the Security Council, and the victims are millions more than the victims of World War II,” he said. “Were these wars in the interest of all of us? No, they were in the interest of one country or three countries or four countries.â€ť

Gaddafi said that another flaw with the United Nations is that many developing nations did not even exist as independent countries when the UN was formed. He said that the UN charter should be reformed to include these nations' needs and input.

Huffpost, you have done a good service here. The press of the world has largely dismissed what the Libyan Head of State was saying. His translator was not good. But, since he was offering serious criticisms of the UN itself, it is scarcely surprising that he would not trust his words to a UN translator. I have taken the liberty of extracting your captions from beneath the images in the slideshow to present them again without distraction:

Muammer Gaddafi argued for an investigation into the Iraq war. He said: "The Iraqi war was the mother of all evils. Why did we invade? This should be investigated. It was a violation of the U.N. charter, without any justification."

Gaddafi said that a two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian crisis wasn't practical and called for an Arab democratic state without religious fanaticism. "Sharon and Arafat are over," he said, declaring that young Israelis and Palestinians want to live in peace together. "They want to live under one state," he said.

All valid points. Huffington Post should be absolutely SHAMED by the pretentious article poll setup. Its retarded and embarrassing to see people tiptoeing about issues that affect the fate of the entire world.

Why do we send millions of dollars to this useless organization?

Perhaps as you move forward in your coursework into upper division econ and history, you'll learn of the little known wars of the 1940s which created the context in which was born the UN.

Know about the wars. Don't know what positive things the UN has done except when dragged behind either the Brits or the US. But a great place for diplomats to hang out and talk and to pass out money while receiving some of it back to take home.

ALL valid points.
Now we know why TentGate got so much airplay...
"Did you hear what he said at the UN?"
"Aw, he wanted to pitch a tent in Central Park...he's a kook. Why would I want to listen to a kook?"
We need to look in to the Lockerbie bombing trial, too, and how the shopkeeper could describe al-Megrahi as being over 6 feet tall and about fifty years old...and he's actually about five-eight and was 36 YO at the time...

'where do you go to my lovely...when you're alone in your head'

Sadams boys were kind hearted spirits...
whatever they had said about them or done to them at their body...

I am not as well protected since their deaths...

which may explain a lot about the timing of my greater spiritual disruption.

Here I was ready to applaud you for at least taking a look at what Gaddafi was saying, and attempting to examine and evaluate it on its own merits as opposed to dismissing it out of hand as simply an "incoherent rant." And what happens? You turn the remarks into an opinion poll. In essence, "Gaddafi's five arguments: were they a stupid rant, or valid points? YOU DECIDE."

R E M I N D you of anyone?

Israel has been targeted by at least 65 UN resolutions.

Beginning Sept. 10, 1972, the US began employing its veto to shield Israel from international criticism, censure and sanctions.

Washington used its veto 32 times to shield Israel from critical draft resolutions between 1972 and 1997. This constituted nearly half of the total of 69 U.S. vetoes cast since the founding of the U.N.

On July 26, 1973, a draft resolution affirmed the rights of the Palestinians and established provisions for Israeli withdrawal from occupied territories as embodied in previous General Assembly resolutions. But, Washington killed this international effort to end Israel’s occupation of Palestinian lands.

I've been wrestling with this over the past several days trying to figure out who Gaddafi looks like and I thnk I finally got it; Manny Ramirez in, say, 25 to 30 years. Or maybe Mickey Rourke?
