PITTSBURGH - First lady Michelle Obama is taking on a new role as international hostess when she welcomes the spouses of world leaders headed to this river city for a two-day economic summit.

While the presidents and prime ministers spend Thursday evening and Friday chewing over the world's problems, Mrs. Obama will entertain their spouses by introducing them to Pittsburgh as well as to some of her own interests, including art and architecture, arts education, and sustainable farming and eating locally grown food.

Events are scheduled for a working farm owned by Teresa Heinz Kerry, a performing arts school and a museum dedicated to Andy Warhol, the 20th century pop artist and Pittsburgh native.

The spousal program kicks off Thursday with dinner at the farm in Fox Chapel, just outside the city, owned by Heinz Kerry, a noted local philanthropist who is married to Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass. The farm raises livestock and grows fruits and vegetables; some of it will be served at the private dinner.

In Washington, Mrs. Obama has been promoting locally grown food and healthier eating with a popular fruit and vegetable garden on the White House lawn, and she recently helped open a farmers' market near the mansion.

For Friday, Mrs. Obama -- who has held jazz, country music and poetry events at the White House and is an advocate for art and music education -- has lined up a tour of Pittsburgh Creative & Performing Arts. The magnet school in the city's downtown cultural district has more than 800 full-time sixth- through 12th-grade students who study dance, instrumental and vocal music, writing, acting and other creative arts.

The spouses will drop in to various classrooms as students rehearse for coming performances. They also will be treated to a show organized by Mrs. Obama featuring performances by students and such notable musical artists as cellist Yo-Yo Ma, country superstar Trisha Yearwood and singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles.

After visiting the performing arts school, the group heads to the Andy Warhol Museum for a private tour and luncheon. They will see some of the collection's most prominent pieces, and will be encouraged to silk-screen one of Warhol's images of a flower onto a tote bag they can take home.

The spouses also will be invited to open one of the hundreds of time capsules Warhol is known for.

Mrs. Obama visited Pittsburgh during the presidential campaign and thought it was a hidden beauty, said Susan Sher, the first lady's chief of staff. She wants to use the chosen venues in a city known for its bridges "as a backdrop to build bridges" and encourage the spouses to get to know each other better.

She also chose sites unique to Pittsburgh and consistent with issues she supports.

"Whenever you're taking a foreign guest to a major American city, you want to highlight what that city is known for," said Anita McBride, who was chief of staff to Laura Bush.

Mrs. Obama is no stranger to mixing with her foreign counterparts on the international scene. She met some of these women when she accompanied President Barack Obama on trips to England, France, Russia and Italy, where Obama attended an economic summit in the earthquake-ravaged city of L'Aquila earlier this year.

But this is her first turn as their host; the summit marks the first time the G-20 spouses have met on U.S. soil.

As important as it is for the leaders to meet regularly, their spouses shouldn't be forgotten, says Letitia Baldrige, who was Jacqueline Kennedy's social secretary.

It's important to "wow the wives" of any foreign visitors "because they take those stories back home," she said.

She's promoting LOCAL food, grow your own. Everyone can afford to do that. The US supplied 40% of its produce during WWII in victory gardens.

When there is enough supply, organic food costs the same as non-organic foods. It does in my neighbourhood.

Michelle is doing great in promoting "organic"... "healthy" foods...

Many G-20 nations do not eat not natural grown foods... so great to show them that we do...

We should! Keep healthy!!!!

As with most subjective matters, so-called "style" is personal and therefore subjective. What one person likes another dislikes. I suppose if Mrs. Obama capitulated to the likes of the many and diverse women who comment on her clothing choices, she would be paranoid and schizophrenic before the end of her first year. What her style says to me is that she is her own person and wears what works for her, what makes her feel comfortable. I prefer this kind of independent, thinking woman to the pretty, "well-dressed" (whatever that is), sometimes (but not always) emptied-headed ones who care what somebody else thinks. Ex-governor Palin spent a lot of the Repubs' money on a fancy wardrobe that did absolutely nothing to improve her mind. I have often been criticized for wearing my skirts a tad too long, but with all the thighs and breasts being exposed all over the place, I figure mine don't need to be seen. Independence and individuality over conformity.

I'm sorry, I love Michelle Obama, I'm not a hater, (I'm a sister too), but she has GOT TO GET A STYLIST! Only teens and children look good in spaghetti straps-- which she recently wore to greet heads of states, ugh! Let's just be honest here.

I googled her stylist, Ikram Goldman, and after seeing how she dresses, I see why Michelle makes such bad choices in her clothing at times. Michelle's mother ALWAYS dresses professionally and well put together. She should seek her advice more.

A professional or classic look can stand the test of time, this is our country she represents. She does get it right sometimes, ie: the purple ensemble by Isaac Mizrahi and the tan coat ensemble by Narciso Rodriguez were both great. Some of the other outfits with the clown flower costume jewelry or the wide skirts were just plain gaudy. When I saw the teak outfit she wore to the Royal Opera House, I had to take to my bed. My apologies if I sound cruel, but, someone had to say this.

Yes, you do sound cruel. Judge not so that you not be judged (Bible). Never Criticize, Condemn or Complain (Dale Carnegie-How to win friends and influence people). Lastly, if you have nothing good to say, say nothing at all. You "love" Michelle Obama? Sorry, you could've fooled me.

She represents our country just fine.

This is a blog, I say what I think in this forum-- as do you. If you love someone, as with children or anything else, you are not their "yes" person. I said nothing about how she represents our country, only how she dresses and I did say something positive on the times when she dressed nicely.

If the world were full of "yes" people, she could put on a cardboard box, and people such as yourself would say it looked fine. I love God and believe in the Bible, but, reality is what it is.
And, believe it or not, it is very distracting when the wife of the head of state wears a child's spaghetti strapped dress! These photos go into the history books, and yes, people do judge you on how you look and dress.

As a devilishly handsome, rich 38-year-old stockbroker, I'm glad to see the news on the G-20 pertains to wives and their dresses. Please, please, media, do not touch on how my hedge fund profits by using the atmosphere as a garbage dump or Chinese sweatshops.

And, yes, Michelle, you look stunning.

It is a beautiful city....a pity that long time residents don't realize this. I grew up in Minneapolis, and i MUCH prefer Pittsburgh. And houses are affordable here too.

Hi, glad to know you're enjoying Pittsburgh, dawlishgal. I remember when you commented on moving and wondered how it's working out. I lived in Pittsburgh for many years and I've never seen its stock of beautiful, well-built, affordable houses equalled anywhere. Victorians and Craftsmen-style homes that would cost a million in other cities can be had a quarter of that, restored.

But who are these "long-time residents" who don't realize Pittsburgh is beautiful? I always found Pittsburghers to be proud of their town -- sometimes overly so! I just feel plain sorry for people who avoid Pittsburgh because they think it's a smokey mill-town. That hasn't been true for two generations. And people who think the 'burgh is all about sports would be surprised to find it's also a mecca for the arts, including literature.

My brother - in -law was transferred from Atlanta to Pittsburgh in November, 1978. He and my sister sold their house, flew to Pittsburgh and bought one. My husband and I visited them in January, 1979. All we could see was snow and slush in that city. Being Southerners, they almost beat us back home when we left Pittsburgh after a three day visit. They couldn't take the weather.

I was in Pittsburgh about ten years ago and thought it was awesome. When I told people how nice I thought it was, they were surprised. They thought it was a stinky, polluted decaying steel town. I hope I convinced them otherwise. I kept saying how much I loved the mountains. I was told the "mountains' were actually hills. Well, as a flat-lander, they looked like mountains to me!

As a handsome 38-year-old stockbroker, I am pleased to say it's one of the few and they all deal with the First Lady's spaghetti straps and tube tops. If they touch on Third World sweatshop exploitation and using oceans and toxic dumps, I'm done here.

Do you know what a lack human rights, financial regulation and envionmental laws have done for my hedge fund? Profits are through the roof. We shouldn't spoil a good thing. Keep the bailouts comin' baby! And whatever you do, media, don't focus on the protesters. They're just jealous they don't have what I have.

Has anyone seen my brandy snifter? Or my mistress?

I hope they make it to the "O," too, but they should stay away from the Iron City Beer. The plant in Lawrenceville is closed. IC is no longer made in Pittsburgh or owned by Pittsburghers. The formerly wonderful Rolling Rock brewery met a similar corporate fate even earlier. No more made from the pure water outside Latrobe. If you're drinking those beers, you're just drinking Bud.
