Bill Sparkman Found Naked, Gagged And Bound

ROGER ALFORD and JEFFREY McMURRAY   09/26/09 12:26 AM ET   AP

Bill Sparkman

BIG CREEK, Ky. — A part-time census worker found hanging in a rural Kentucky cemetery was naked, gagged and had his hands and feet bound with duct tape, said an Ohio man who discovered the body two weeks ago.

The word "fed" was written in felt-tip pen on 51-year-old Bill Sparkman's chest, but authorities have released very few other details in the case, such as whether they think it was an accident, suicide or homicide.

Jerry Weaver of Fairfield, Ohio, told The Associated Press on Friday that he was certain from the gruesome scene that someone killed Sparkman.

"He was murdered," Weaver said. "There's no doubt."

Weaver said he was in the rural Kentucky county for a family reunion and was visiting some family graves at the cemetery on Sept. 12 along with his wife and daughter when they saw the body.

"The only thing he had on was a pair of socks," Weaver said. "And they had duct-taped his hands, his wrists. He had duct tape over his eyes, and they gagged him with a red rag or something."

Two people briefed on the investigation said various details of Weaver's account matched the details of the crime scene, though both people said they were not informed who found the body. The two spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case.

"And they even had duct tape around his neck," Weaver said. "And they had like his identification tag on his neck. They had it duct-taped to the side of his neck, on the right side, almost on his right shoulder."

Authorities have refused to say if Sparkman was at work going to door-to-door for census surveys before he died.

Both of the people briefed on the investigation confirmed Sparkman's Census Bureau ID was found taped to his head and shoulder area. Weaver said he couldn't tell if the tag was a Census ID because he didn't get close enough to read it. He could see writing on Sparkman's chest, and could read that it said "fed."

Authorities said Thursday that a preliminary cause of death was asphyxiation, pending a full medical examination. Even the details behind that were murky. According to a Kentucky State Police statement, the body was hanging from a tree with a rope around the neck, yet it was in contact with the ground.

Weaver, who works for a family topsoil business in Fairfield, said the body was about 50 yards from a 2003 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck. He said Sparkman's clothes were in the bed of the truck.

"His tailgate was down," Weaver said. "I thought he could have been killed somewhere else and brought there and hanged up for display, or they actually could have killed him right there. It was a bad, bad scene.

"It took me three or four good nights to sleep. My 20-year-old daughter ended up sleeping in the floor in our bedroom." he said.

Clay County Sheriff Kevin Johnson declined to comment on the investigation because the department is only playing a supporting role but said patrols have increased in the Daniel Boone National Forest since the body was found.

The Census Bureau has suspended door-to-door interviews in the rural county pending the investigation.

State Trooper Don Trosper said it was clear this wasn't a natural death but said all other possibilities were being considered.

"This case has many facets," he said. "To investigate cases, you have to rule out different scenarios. We are not able to rule out many scenarios at this time, and that's what makes this a difficult case."

Although anti-government sentiment was one possibility in the death, some in law enforcement also cited the prevalence of drug activity in the area – including meth labs and marijuana fields – although they had no reason to believe there was a link to Sparkman's death.

"Now they're taking their meth lab operations into the rural, secluded areas," the sheriff said. "We've had complaints in the area, but not that particular location."

Hopefully, the FBI will launch a major manhunt for the people who murdered this poor man, along the lines of the murder of the three civil rights workers in Mississippi in the sixties.

Recipe for senseless murder:

Ingredients:

Three heaping cups of ignorance.
One heaping cup of pundit-brand disinformation.
One heaping cup of hate.
One heaping cup of fear.

Mix ingredients furiously in large bowl until steaming hot. Sprinkle with racism to taste.

Serve.

Ah... but don't forget the timing has to be right too. Mr. Sparkman was found in the National Forest on September 12, which was coincidentally the day that was designated as the Teabagger March to "take back America" day.... the day that right wingers were told to "stand up for what they believed in".

The problem is that these "patriots" did not feel the heavy hand of government upon them during the "Bush Years" Something else is going on here.

WTF???!!! Accident?! Suicide?!
01:00 AM on 09/27/2009
The rightwingtrolls have been all over this site trying to convince everyone it was somehow a suicide. As though one can duct tape their own hands and feet and then proceed to asphyxiate themselves. Sad on numerous levels for numerous reasons. Guess they're in denial, maybe.

EVERYONE should watch this video of Sparkman giving a commencement speech upon graduating.

It lets you know that he was a giver, a fighter, and a positive force for good in this world:

Up until recently, extremist views have been considered on the fringe, not taken seriously. You can certainly find them on the internet, and this explosion of blogs and websites in the last few years has fueled a kind of alternative reality: a cocktail of fear and hate that can be seen in Town Halls, rallies, and with television and radio commentators.
Government is seen as "Nazi", So, what may at first give a frission of fear like a horror movie suddenly has become accepted reality for some.
Some read into the 9/12 project and the 9 principles as a manifesto to disobey the government as patriotic duty.

It is in this atmosphere that Bill Sparkman’s death seems so alarming.

Well written. It is hard not to think there is a connection or that something like this was coming as the Speaker of the House shared, it makes me wonder if she had wind of this since it happened before her comments. She seemed so disturbed that day.

I want to repost to clarify that I am in no way saying I have evidence or know what is really going on.. Never have claimed that... Stop with the nonsense, we are all just throwing around theories.. This set of comments will be rendered dumbtarded when they figure out what exactly happened. Hopefully we have people working on this on par with what we see on CSI, Psych, L&O, etc LOL ;)

Well said, Digitalprophet.
I have not given much credibility to the drug connection, but I well admit my thoughts are speculation, based on deduction from what i have read.
I too, hope that what really happened can come to light, and justice is done.
i so much hope this for his family, and the the memory of Bill Sparksman, who should have some dignity.

Drip drip drip slowly as this story unfurls I think we can now safely say this is not a suicide. I can't say I ever thought it was !!!!

I'd like to send money to his family a small donation. Can someone send me a link.

I'm not rich, so I'm not breaking the bank, but I can do with out Starbucks for three days, and send his family that.

That is such a great idea.
I feel so much for the family. For their loved one to be treated in such a wretched way is heartbreaking.
So many speculations here on his death, but I think what would unite us is healing the anguish of his family. I honor him as a human being and his dignity.

Gagged and bound?! This definitely wasn't suicide. Who would have guessed?
10:51 PM on 09/26/2009
If this tragedy was comitted by a grower or lab operator, they have more to fear from others in the business than from law enforcement. Can you imagine trying to harvest a crop within 200 miles of where this happened?
01:04 AM on 09/27/2009
True... they were obviously trying to get attention. Usually growers try to avoid that at all costs.

Given the reputation of Clay County and some residents' probable resistance to census workers...
WHY are they sent out alone and their safety's not monitored?
12:50 AM on 09/27/2009
great question

i'm under the impression that the census bureau allows for employees to work in pairs in dangerous areas or avoid dangerous areas

i'm also under the impression that most census bureau employees are local and familiar with the area they're working

I say again ..
----
I challenge every like-minded person to not allow Bill Sparkman to pass quietly, regardless of the events leading to his death. This is no longer about right and left in the long run because what is being done by the right will someday serve as rationalization for similar behavior on the left.

There is no promise larger than that made by Obama, to restore civility to our discourse. And of all the accusations from right wing fanatics and left wing Eeyores about perceived promises broken, President Obama has shown incredible grace and class in the face of rabid opposition to anything he stands for, even for who he is as a man. While you may reasonably disagree with his policies, any person who does not respect President Barack Obama as a man of his word has no right to stand beneath the American flag. To you, I say directly, your prehistoric ways will no longer be tolerated as free speech or fair thought.

To the rest of you, please channel your fear, pain and anger. If nothing else good comes from this, we must redouble our efforts to end this barbarism in our own back yard. I wish for us all ... the courage to call it out when we see it and the courage to stand with others who do the same. This aggression will not stand!

There has to be drugs involved here. My state is notorious for growing Marijuana in the rural areas...

I would think that he was headed in for a simple census and saw a giant cache of weed. Paranoid hillbillies freaking booby-trap their fields. They were probably freaked out and killed him. Then the scheming begins to make it look more gruesome and political..

Or who knows... This guy could have been undercover waiting to make a bust and they found out.

Some people from that area posted that there are a lot of meth labs in the county, but writing 'Fed' makes it appear there was more than just self defence involved.

My questions aren't rhetorical.
09:33 PM on 09/26/2009
I think too many people are mislead by the term "meth lab." The drug isn't made in any kind of facility, all it takes is a stove. Heck, there is even a new method for making it in a plastic soda bottle. These rural meth labs are trailers or rented shacks. If someone is stumbles upon them, they just find a new spot.

Imagining that the census worker was "undercover" is one more fabrication that puts these people in danger.
10:20 PM on 09/26/2009
You are right. In fact, meth can be made with a microwave andTupperware.

Either way, drugs are most probably involved.
