PITTSBURGH - Comparing the arts to a form of diplomacy, first lady Michelle Obama on Friday promoted arts education while treating her counterparts to tours of two of this city's leading cultural institutions.

The first stop for Mrs. Obama and the spouses of world leaders attending an economic summit was the Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts School, where students major in dance, music, theater and other creative arts.

"We are here because I wanted to introduce them to some of America's finest, most creative, most accomplished young people. I wanted to showcase the value of arts education and you put that on display," Mrs. Obama told hundreds of CAPA students called to the auditorium for a special concert she organized.

Arts education, she said, helps youngsters discover their voices and develop their talents.

"This should be an opportunity that is available for every single child in this nation, and quite frankly around the world," Mrs. Obama said.

She noted the long-standing practice in which world leaders' spouses share the arts.

"We share our music, we share our dance, we share our culture," Mrs. Obama said. "It is a form of diplomacy in which we can all take part."

Students and spouses were treated to a sizzling, half-hour show with performances by cellist Yo-Yo Ma, who was accompanied by a CAPA student studying percussion. Country superstar Trisha Yearwood sang "How Will I Live," and singer-songer writer Sara Bareilles belted out her popular hit "Love Song."

Before the show, the spouses broke into small groups and dropped into classrooms to watch student rehearsals. Mrs. Obama watched as students performed scenes from the play "Porgy & Bess" in one classroom, and heard a female vocalist sing "I Dream a Dream" in another room.

The spouses also posed for a group photo. Mrs. Obama stood in between Margarita Zavala of Mexico and Marisa Leticia da Silva of Brazil.

Spouses also were invited to take a tour and eat lunch at the Andy Warhol Museum.

The seven-story museum houses the art collection and archives of the late 20th century pop artist and Pittsburgh native. The spouses will get a chance to try the silk-screen printing technique Warhol popularized, and peruse items from one of more than 600 cardboard "time-capsule" boxes Warhol used to store his keepsakes.

In one of those boxes, archivists found $17,000 in cash. The big discovery in another box was a piece of crusty cake from Caroline Kennedy's 1986 wedding to Edwin Schlossberg.

On Thursday, Mrs. Obama opened two days of spouse events by sharing her passion for eating locally grown food. She treated the group to dinner at Rosemont Farm, which is owned by Teresa Heinz Kerry, wife of Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass. She also is the widow of Sen. John Heinz, R-Pa., of the Heinz ketchup family.

The working farm grows produce and raises livestock. Salad greens and apples grown there were on the menu for the private dinner on the property located in Fox Chapel, just outside of Pittsburgh.

The women ate at a long, rectangular table with Mrs. Obama seated between the spouses from Brazil and Indonesia, Ani Bambang Yudhoyono. The ladies were joined by Heinz Kerry, White House social secretary Desiree Rogers and Susan Sher, Mrs. Obama's chief of staff.

Scenes from inside the "first lady" dinner. Michelle was dressed perfectly for the setting (chic casual outdoor dining). The first ladies who wore suits, etc. look out of place.

If the First Ladies who wore suits look out of place they are all out of place but not... Carla Bruni.
On the third picture Michelle seems to appreciate her vis a vis .... Carla Bruni and smiles at her.

Yes. Most of them are too dressed up for the setting. Michelle's dress fits the scene perfectly but I wonder if she informed her guests that the dress was chic but not too dressy.

Etiquette rules say that guests should ask about the attire or ask the hostess what she's wearing so that they can dress in line with the hostess.

I find it interesting that the other First Ladies are upping their style game to rise to the level of Michelle Obama and Carla Sarkozy. Some, e.g., Sarah Brown, are definitely dressed much better than at the last summit.

Did you notice that several G20 women wore thick belts or sashes above the waist or outside their sweaters?

I hate to be a party pooper, but none of them can hold a candle to the German Chancellor. That's what I loved about Secretary Clinton as FLOTUS. She projected power, and not just style and fashion.

HP why are you hating on the FLOTUS? There are beautiful footage and pictures of MO but it's seems that you bothered with a woman of color because you assume she should be of your character. Really HP? Shame on you.

Mo and false lashes?
Carla Bruni is simplicity personified. (hardly any make up and hair all natural) I bet she does not require 25 attendants and hours to get ready. cant get enough of her. SHE can be compared to Jackie kennedy.

I really do not to like to criticize any of the women because it is kind of like telling a parent that one of their daughters looks better than the other one. But, since you find it necessary to berate First Lady Michelle Obama while elevating Carla Bruni, I will "simply" say, perhaps Carla should try some false lashes, hair and makeup. All natural ain't all it's cracked up to be. Michelle's appearance always reflects her genuine down to earth, non-pretentious demeanor.

I think all the praise for Michelle is doing more harm to her fashion sense. we need to be truthful and let FLOTUS know how poorly she is dressing. false praise is very poisonous.
Carla Bruni takes great effort to dress for the occasion, cant we be gracious and accept the effort and say: she is stunning and well dressed. where is our sense of fair play and genuineness.
we know MO can dress well. why doesnt she? she is not a teenager, she is FLOTUS and should dress in a way that commands respect. she represents our nation.
all who criticize her are not her enemy but trying to send a message to MO that she urgently needs to change the way she dresses.

Carla Bruni dresses tastefully and conservatively for the occasion. Anyone could wear what she does and look appropriate and blend in.

That's not Michelle's style. She doesn't embrace conservative one-color dresses and suits with one distinctive styling detail or accessory.

Michelle likes to express her mood, the mood of the occasion, a feeling of fun or freedom, through her clothes.

Is it my taste? No. Does she usually look great in a conservative fashion sense?

No.

But she uses fashion to express HERSELF. It's bold, different. Unlike lovely Carla Bruni, she's making a statement with her clothes--more like an artist, a painter.

I don't always love the choices, but, like a talented painter I may not love, I respect the approach.

Mom, is that you??? :). Seriously, you sound just like my mother - but in a good way...love it..:)
I think I have to agree with you on this.
Sometimes she looks stunning, but other times...you are right, it's kind of like...ah, just a little housewife. She is a very accomplished woman in her own right...she doesn't have to dress like Hillary - because that's not who she is, but she could definitely dress a little less mid-western and a little more east coast.

You are kind of right. Other sites show different angles of the same outfits and you are able to appreciate many of outfits that are trashed by the lonely. There is a reason that professional photographers a paid a lot of money. Lighting and angle are 80% of a good photograph.

There is nothing even remotely interesting about any of Carla Bruni's clothes. Same style. Same color. She looks very nice in them because she still has that clothes hanger body.

That explains it. The only bad thing that I will say about Carla is that her face is kind of hard and masculine. I am not really saying that that is bad, but I prefer a woman with a softer looking face.
