I began reading the NY Times when I was in sixth grade. It was delivered to our desks and was required reading, along with the now long defunct NY Herald Tribune. That was 1959/1960. In all the years since, I've watched the Times dumb down it's copy but not it's content. The Sunday Times is still one of life's greatest simple pleasures. I will mourn it's passing.
The NY Times is ridiculous. $2 for the daily paper and $5 for the Sunday paper. In a recession? How can they last.
The Times was great in the 60s but they stopped using big words in the 70s as they followed the dumbing down of America. I doubt they will last 15 more years. USA Today will be their successor, they have lots of bright graphics.
I remember when The Boston Globe was a good paper, before they bought out every columnist worth reading. If The Times is planning to buy out the likes of Maureen Dowd or Frank Rich, will Will Shortz be enough to keep them in business? I'm not so sure.
They might actually *gain* some readers!
Ah yes, another newspaper in a death spiral. When management is too dumb to figure out how to make money, layoff enough workers to make it "appear" that you are making money.
In another quarter, they will layoff more workers to balance the next quarterly report.
