KABUL — A powerful member of President Hamid Karzai's Cabinet threatened to quit after a suicide car bomb attack targeted him Sunday, killing five people, in the latest Taliban attempt to destabilize Afghanistan's struggling government. Two Americans were among six NATO troop deaths elsewhere.

Shortly after the bombing in the western city of Herat, Energy Minister Ismail Khan railed against the dramatic rise in violence in Afghanistan, saying that thousands of new refugees are seeking shelter in Herat because of militant attacks in outlying districts. Five civilians died in the failed assassination attempt, police said.

Two days ago, Khan said, a young man was hanged by militants only a couple miles (kilometers) outside a NATO base and Afghan government center. Kidnappings of wealthy family members are on the rise, including the abduction of girls, he said.

Khan said government security agents had warned him that insurgents planned to target him. Two earlier assassination attempts had been foiled, he said.

"Very clearly I want to say that if the government does not form a clear strategy to bring peace and security, and the situation continues like this, I will not participate in the Cabinet anymore," Khan said.

Taliban assassination attempts against Afghan officials have intensified this year, with more than 100 officials and pro-government tribal elders attacked – half of them fatally. Echoing a strategy of insurgents in Iraq, the targeted violence undermines the weak government and drives educated and competent Afghans away from official posts.

The convoy carrying Khan, a powerbroker in Herat and former governor of that western province, was headed to the airport when a suicide car bomb exploded outside a high school, said Raouf Ahmadi, a police spokesman. Khan said five civilians died and 17 people were wounded, including four of Khan's bodyguards.

A Taliban spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahid, claimed responsibility and said the target was Khan.

Story continues below

The Taliban assassination campaign is a strong sign of deteriorating security in the country, where a record number of U.S. and NATO troops have also died this year. The Obama administration is now debating whether to send more American troops to Afghanistan as its government faces allegations of widespread fraud from the disputed Aug. 20 presidential election.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates issued a stern warning to critics of a continued troop presence in Afghanistan Sunday, saying the Islamic extremist Taliban and al-Qaida would perceive an early pullout as a victory similar to the Soviet Union's humiliating withdrawal in 1989 after a 10-year war.

"Taliban and al-Qaida, as far as they're concerned, defeated one superpower. For them to be seen to defeat a second, I think, would have catastrophic consequences in terms of energizing the extremist movement, al-Qaida recruitment, operations, fundraising, and so on. I think it would be a huge setback for the United States," Gates said in an interview broadcast Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union."

But many Americans are skeptical of sending more troops to support a government in the midst of recounting votes from a tainted presidential election. Karzai currently has about 54 percent of the vote. If enough questionable ballots get thrown out he could drop below the 50 percent threshold needed to avoid a runoff.

Karzai's main challenger, Abdullah Abdullah, said Sunday he was satisfied so far with the recount, which is using a sampling of votes to speed the process and meet a narrowing timeframe to hold a possible runoff before winter snows block much of the country.

"We will follow up that process step by step till, God willing, a government acceptable to you comes to power," he told a crowd in Kabul.

Two U.S. service members died Saturday in the country's south – one from a roadside bomb explosion and the other from an insurgent attack, the NATO-led force said Sunday. A British soldier died Sunday from a bomb explosion while patrolling in southern Afghanistan, Britain's Defense Ministry said.

Elsewhere, three French soldiers died in a violent storm in northeastern Afghanistan late Saturday. One soldier was struck by lightning, while two were swept away by a rain-swollen river during an operation in Kapisa province, said military spokesman Christophe Prazuck.

This year has been the deadliest of the eight-year war for U.S. and NATO troops. The six latest deaths bring to 64 the number of NATO troops killed this month.

An airstrike Saturday by international forces in Wardak province, bordering Kabul, killed three Afghan civilians, said Shahidullah Shahid, spokesman for the provincial governor. Civilian deaths in airstrikes have infuriated Afghans, and the top NATO commander, U.S. Gen. Stanley McChrystal, has made protecting innocent Afghans a top priority.

Bring the troops home NOW.

We need that money here for schools, education, hospitals, and rebuilding America.
Plus, I would rather see some of that money spent on this war go to another 3rd world country that would use it to help educate their women and children.

Bush fought afghanistan on the cheap. If we need more troops what would have happened had we sent 200,000 troops to afgahn instead of iraq in 2003. Bush fought the wrong war for nothing.

Is this what the Afghanistan occupation is all about?

93% of heroin comes from Afghanistan. Who's getting it out of Afghanistan? With the all-seeing Homeland Security how is it getting here? Who's making the record profits?

What if the genuine reason for NATO to stay in Afghanistan is to be able to build a pipeline from former USSR republics to ocean through Pakistan ? I'm just wondering...

Two things always happen when an empire decides to fight in Afghanistan:

1. They lose
2. The civilian population gets thrust into a meat grinder.

Just ask Alexander the Great, the British and the Soviet Union. I do hope we won't add my own country to that list. Afghanistan is the graveyard of empires.

Absolutely...it makes one wonder how so many..West Point graduates...who know something about Military History...could be..SO ARROGANT!

And that becomes a kind of Defacto 'Proof' of just how bad the situation within the Military Industrial GovCorp triangle is....True Believerism...not a good thing for a Military leadership to promote...

This is the Equivalent of ANOTHER Stupifyingly Arrogant Military Machine and Surviellance State...in fact...its almost an AXIOM...to wit...True Believers Will ALWAY'S ATTACK RUSSIA IN THE WINTER....

This is the WINTER of our discontent...and Afghanistan is our RUSSIA...and..AWAY WE GO....

I find it so amazing that "public opinion" is somehow magically "turning against our occupation in Afghanistan". What has substantially changed since the Bush administration?

It can't be the escalation, because the MSM didn't oppose "the surge" - and in fact, went out of their way to distort its "success" – despite its dismal failure to achieve even its own ever-dwindling goals.

It can't be the draft, because we still don't conscript our military - so the occupational forces are still volunteers who've chosen the military life.

It can't be the rising casualty totals, because back when they were skyrocketing in Iraq between '04 and '06 we never heard the media beating the "get out of Iraq" drum. Quite the contrary, they did everything to downplay and underestimate every peace march and rally I ever attended. My view from the streets was that Americans were much more opposed to Iraq than to Afghanistan - but I never got that from "the news".

So what is driving this alleged American "public opinion" ??

Could it be that the MSM had no objection to Afghanistan when Bush was in charge, but somehow suddenly they find it objectionable with Obama at the helm?

Why would that be?

Or what other explanations might there be?

It hasn't changed under Obama..suddenly...

This began under BushII and is part of the reason obama was elected..to 'Change" things...so with Bush..we KNEW the score...Oil War...etc..

But with Obama..even those that did not vote for him..are repulsed by the LIE! With Bush..I KNEW the score...with Obama..I was LIED TO..A HUGE...LIE..an actual DECEPTION..."Change We Can Believe In"..We NOW REALIZE...is SO FAR FROM THE TRUTH..it's EQUAL to "WMD'S"...Lies Leading To War!

Of COURSE there is an element of Hypocrisy from the Right..but the really infuriating...APPEASEMENT..from the Left...is ALSO a contributing factor...to this CONFUSION.

The public NEVER had the stomache for the INCREDIBLE LEVELS of Civilian DEATHS. So..now..with the DIABOLICALLY EVIL "DRONES"...we're talking..HUNDREDS..of casualties "Under" Obama's AUSPICES...these are OBAMA"S CASUALTIES...and people WERE weary..SICKENED by it...and they STILL ARE...again..the REALITY is "NO CHANGE"...not..."A CHANGE"

Obama voters..have made ONE excuse after another..I feel at least fortunate that i no longer REALLY hear that AMAZINGLY pathetic Wheeze....."its Only Been Six Months..' .....'its ONLY been 2 YEARS..'

I voted for him...I would NOT..and WILL NOT..do so again...our "Government" has never been MORE Hostile to the People...and now..they have CAMERAS...

If you think you were lied to, you haven't listened to what Obama has been saying since he started his campaign. He has asserted all along, from the very beginning, that he felt that Iraq was a diversion and that the real war on terror should be fought in Afghanistan. So I don't know what delusion you've been laboring under, but "change" never referred to removing our troops from Afghanistan. And the notion that Obama voters require any excuse is absurd. We know who Obama ran against. It was a man who said he didn't care if we occupied Iraq of 50 years ... or 100.

Obama voters made the right choice, and you're going to have to wait at least two generations before you start shoveling revisionist history. We all still remember the Republican candidate.

The people were not lied to about Afghanistan. They were lied to about Iraq. During his entire campaign, right from the beginning, more than two-and-a-half years ago, Obama said Bush had "dropped the ball" by putting our forces into Iraq when they should have been in Afghanistan. He's doing just what he promised.

Nyland8. I am one of those who *suddenly* disapproves of our actions in Afghanistan. My disapproval is a selfish one. I am a grandmother and my young grandson who could not find employment enough to allow him to save for College and start a life with his girlfriend decided that he would do something honorable with his life and go into the military and make a contribution to his country. Not one soul could talk him out of it. He is my daughter's only child. His girlfriend also signed up. Their plan is to serve well, save their money and to afterwards go to College. I see no hope for Afghanistan, and I certainly see no hope in the loss of life of these two young children, or, worse, them becoming harmed in any way. That is one side of it. Another side comes from another close familymember, who, as a VA-physician, treats war veterans. So, there may well be an *alleged* American *public opinion*. But here you have my opinion and the reasons for it. There is not ONE explanation for it. The MSM does not influence my opinions at all. I am very close to my kids and grandkids. I have nightmares about what could happen to my grandson and his wonderful girlfriend. And there is absolutely no point to it. My grandson's enlisting has brought the heartbreak of casulaties of others close to my heart. It suddenly is my cause as much as their cause.

Of course you realize that your story, or its equivalent, has been told several thousand fold - but the people who are directly affected by these two occupations are still a tiny minority of Americans. That was my point about conscription.

Your grandson is no different from anyone's grandson who has made the same choice. But that one example doesn't sway American "public opinion" in any measurable way ... just your own. When the MSM asserts that "public opinion" has swayed against the war, they're talking about the equivalent of millions of Americans - none of which is directly affected by the war in the way that you are.

So there is another reason.
