What's Your Reaction?
Gates

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said on Sunday it would be a "strategic mistake" for the U.S. to put a timeline or exit strategy on its presence in Afghanistan -- a position that appears to put him at direct odds with the president.

Appearing on CNN's "State of the Union," Gates insisted that far from being a quagmire, Afghanistan was a country that could be pacified and stabilized if the right policy was adopted. One thing the United States should not do, he added, was set deadlines or outline an approach by which military forces would eventually leave the country.

"I think that -- that the notion of -- of timelines and exit strategies and so on, frankly, I think would all be a, a strategic mistake," said Gates. "The reality is, failure in Afghanistan would be a huge setback for the United States. Taliban and Al Qaeda, as far as they're concerned, defeated one superpower. For them to be seen to defeat a second, I think, would have catastrophic consequences in terms of energizing the extremist movement, Al Qaeda recruitment, operations, fundraising, and so on."

Skepticism with exit strategies is a vestige of the approach the Bush administration took to the war in Iraq, where it was routinely predicted that insurgents would wait out American forces before overriding the country. But some politicians at the time -- notably then-Sen. Barack Obama -- insisted that deadlines for troop removal were important for, among other things, spurring political reconciliation within the country.

Not surprisingly, Obama has taken a similar approach to Afghanistan. In a March 20 interview with CBS' 60 Minutes, he insisted that "there's got to be an exit strategy" for U.S. forces in that country so that there is a "sense that this is not perpetual drift and stalemate."

"What we can't do is think that just a military approach in Afghanistan is gonna be able to solve our problems," Obama said. "One of the things that we have never done is ramped up the civilian side of the equation with agricultural specialists who can help farmers replace poppy as a crop with people who are able to electrify villages that have never seen electricity. We haven't done some of the diplomatic spade work that needs to be done. So what we're looking for is a comprehensive strategy. And there's got to be an exit strategy."

The daylight between Gates and Obama on this issue is no small policy disagreement. Whether or not to lay out a tactical approach for getting U.S. forces out of Afghanistan is one of the major debates facing this administration as it considers sending an additional 40,000 troops to that country. Progressives -- deeply skeptical of the war in the first place -- are demanding that the president demonstrate that a "clear exit strategy" exists before making any additional troop decision. Obama would exhaust a serious amount of political goodwill with his base should he follow Gates and drop timelines or an exit plan from his Afghan policy.

Leave, ASAP!

The USA tortures, goes to war for profit, and have a government bought by the highest bidder.

That's a plutocracy.

The Corrupt USA CANNOT BRING DEMOCRACY TO ANYONE

Thanks Sam, for creating more heat than light.

This is a critical debate that we are trying to have here to try and figure out which way forward in Afghanistan. It would be extremely helpful to all of us if these issues were reported on responsibly and accurately.

If now is not the time for responsible journalism, then when?

During my days in the Vietnam War things were simple, we gave government tax money to hire a government military and fought a government war. That way corruption was kept to a minimum and incentives to extend the War were offset by the casualties.

Comes now Gates, who after being Director of the CIA was on the board of a dozen defense industry corporations, and he to have more civilian contractor people fighting our invasions of Iraq and Afghan then military people. And a mighty shock-blow to our economy would it be if such carnage on the helpless should ever end.

Let’s look at some data: ¼ million sq miles, 28 million people, 34 provinces, over 90,00 villages and towns. At least 6 diverse ethnic groups, some who are willing to kill each other at the drop of a hat. A literacy rate of 36%, and weary population that just wants to be left alone to eke out a living.

The Russians had 100,000 troops there along with a 100,000 of locals that supported them and couldn’t make a dent. They were driven out by the same few people we are up against. And WE are so egotistical to presume that we will prevail. The Taliban are like roaches. Get rid of a few and they will scatter to the hills, only to return to the villages where they can impose their fear and will.

Unless we want to be there for a decade or more we better adopt a saner strategy that meets OUR objective: create havoc with Al-Qaeda and keep THEM at bay. We have developed drone technology and are developing many micro-bots that can explore and kill. We’d be better served by building a large secure base with a steady deployment to launch search and destroy missions, rather than trying to build a nation, no matter how sorry we feel for the poor Afghanis.

The mission in Afghanistan was “won” when Al-Qaeda was sent running into the hills and Pakistan. The Taliban should never have been part of the mission. They are despicable and an evil part of a corrupt culture that exists throughout the region. Without ridding Afghanistan of ALL the corruption of ALL its tribal leaders oiur presence there is doomed to failure. 40,000 additional troops, will do nothing to cure that. We will need a surge (not a gradual increase) of 500,000 troops to make a dent. We have to take complete control of all of Afghanistan’s societal institutions, purge all corruption and put in place people who will step forward to run the country with its people in mind. Then stick around to allow these seeds to grow. If the experts (POTUS, Gates and any Generals on the ground) don’t realize this they are seriously deluded. Are we ready to reinstate the draft?

Considering Obama has not made a single call militarily that worked out well, he should probably shut off the prompter and listen to Gates.

Gates has actual accomplishment on his resume.

One very small accomplishment, 26 years of CIA spy experience. No other government experience but CIA drone type, clandestine stab them in the back type, spy experience.

Gates -- Dictator of Empire USA

Gates: 21 years with the CIA, 5 years with National Security Council

We have a visible political government headed by President Obama. But politicians run a make believe government, as Obama has no power or control, as he must go to a higher power to ask for control.

Also we have a hidden State government headed by Dictator Gates. Now the State is a real government, as the State is all of law enforcement, all our military and a most deadly government

For in 1946 Congress created the National Security State. Which we now call the State.

PRESIDENTS RULED BY DICTATOR GATES

President Obama ruled by Secretary of Defense
President Bush Jr.: ruled by Secretary of Defense (Nov 2006)
President Bush Sr. ruled by Director of CIA and deputy national security adviser under
President Reagan ruled by Deputy Director of CIA

In 1986 he had a role in the Iran-Contra scandal, as Gates had been in charge while Oliver North and others were selling missiles to Iran and funneling cash to Central America.

Our corporate rich plunder half the wealth in the Middle East, and they in turn plunder the World Trade Center.

So, our multinationals now have an excuse to plunder even more -- all the oil in Iraq theirs for sure.

And so, how do we spot one of those hoarding capitalists among us? Read only six words in their post, and if it gives you stress back away from it.

While a time line is not advised, of course, an exit strategy is needed. There will be no formal surrender of the Taliban and declaration of peace. Most are illiterate there to begin with. Therefore, the conditions must be established under which we declare victory and come home. We have been there almost a decade with little progress and need to consider what can and can not be accomplished in a country with such a primitive infrastructure. Where the Taliban can be co-opted and paid to fight for us or drop their arms we should do it. Perhaps we can use warlords to suppress the Taliban. Everything must be considered and civilian causalities really kept at a minimum.

We agree, but we don’t count as our corporate rich call the shots.

So what you need to do is get our ruling class to give you a map showing where is to go the “Great Afghan Pipeline.” Then get a figure on how much of a cut on the profits their willing to offer the warlords, and start calling some of the NGO’s in Kabul.

Surely it would fly, if you could get the right people together.

It's a wonder the Russians get any work done, what with the constant hysterical laughing.

If Iraq had given our oil corporations a big chunk of their oil fields, we would never have bombed their people or invaded their land.

If after the invasion Iraq had not been so cheap with their oil, if this very moment Iraq gave our oil corporations a big chunk of their oil, surely our terrorism, occupation and boots on their holy ground would come to a screeching halt.

If the people of Afghanistan had not been so rebellious, our oil corporations would now have completed the “Great Afghan Pipeline” and all that black gold to the North would be taken out of the hands of Russia and China, and flowing south toward the U.S. and Western Europe.

Bombs away, just a few more bombs and we can have our way, that’s what I always say.

How did those clever oil companies convince those poor dupes to fly those airplanes into the WTC, Pentagon, and if not thwarted, somewhere in Washington, DC? Otherwise your conspiracy theory is incomplete.

The oil companies didn't have to be involved in 9-11 in order to conspire and sieze the opportunity after the fact. Do war profiteers have to start the war or can they just capitalize on an oportunity that drops in their laps? Iraq had nothing to do with 9-11.

Absolutely no Afghanistan had anything to do with 9/11.

Now, do you know the nationality of even one 9/11 terrorist?

This is why Gates needs to be replaced. Wes Clark should be eligible to serve in the administration, soon. I hope the President is smart enough to replace Gates with Clark, when that time comes.....,

I just want to know if we are there to build a nation or to stop AQ? If we were there to stop AQ then declare victory and get out. If to nation build. Why? What makes anyone think we can do it?
So bring the troops home , give them a new mission. Defend our borders and ports!
