MONEY!!!! well or cars, food, bills. Every guy I know that dates often or has a girlfriend is deep in debt and tries to pretend to be rich (they can thank Capital One for that opportunity). Those that aren't willing to spend the money and put up the act that they're a big shot stay alone. Have to love America and our materialism.

Sounds to me like a lot of these motivations should be illegal. A lot of times it sounds like the exchange of "stuff" for sex. Don't they have a word for that???

I agree that marriage should be illegal.
Most men and women go into the institution with power imbalances and very sick ideas. Ideas like security through marriage or having a sexual partner always "there".

Modern marriage is a sick hybrid of capitalism and monogamy, forms of human endeavor that have been shown to fail utterly.

This is so true, but men don't get it. I think men just want to have sex for one reason. My husband thinks I want to have sex a lot because I'm horny all the time and that's so not it. I want to feel pretty or sexy or I want to forget about stuff, or I just want to feel close to him or a million different reasons.Not because of a feeling I have, but a desire for a feeling I want to have. I'm not already stimulated. I'm usually trying to feel horny on the way to doing it. It's an emotional need, not a physical one.

Patriarchal societies that are supported by these pathetic portrayals of women.

In a patriarchal society, women must compete for men, rather than competing against men for academic honors, scholarships and, later, well-paid professional positions in order to get those resources. These challenges to the patriarchy cannot be fought on a level playing field, so we keep reading about these reasons why we're so "different." Yet what is different here is not women vs men, but rather the gender-limited circumstances we are placed in, and sometimes fight our way out of.

Resources we can get by working for them, just like anyone else. Genetic advantages we can get from the sperm bank, thank you very much.

I wonder what this author's mom did for a living.

You fundamentally misunderstand the article and, therefore, the science.

The authors are talking about woman's genes -- which generally underlie the decision making. At the present time, we can pass legislation and change societal standards over a relatively short period of time, but our genes are thousands of years in the making and indifferent to short-term policy fluctuations. Genes are what they are.

Some of the comments here are dismaying.

Anecdotally, in my conversations with the females I've known through school and work situations, would often dismiss a guy w/out a second glance because of lack of bi-symmetry. His lazy eye, longer leg, off balance style of walking, one ear higher than the other. Its a physical trait that sends off warning flags in procreators.

There was also a study (that I cannot find at the moment) that women preferred a man's income to increase proportionately to each inch of height he lost. Once they were shorter than the woman, then the income increase had to be exponential to equal desirability.
