What's Your Reaction?

As part of the Huffington Post's efforts to bear witness to the effects of the current economic environment on ordinary Americans, we're rounding up some of the most compelling stories reported by local news organizations around the country.

Monique Zimmerman-Stein has been nearly blind for the last two years from Stickler syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. She recently decided to forego her own treatment to save funds to treat her two daughters, who also suffer from the condition, reports Lane DeGregory of the St. Petersburg Times.

The family is covered under husband Gary's Blue Cross/Blue Shield plan, but that coverage only pays for 80 percent of medical expenses.

She will no longer get treatment to preserve that last slice of light. The injections that might help cost $380 after insurance, and she needs one every six weeks. She could be spending that money on her daughters' care.

If forgoing treatment might help them see, she said, "That's a choice any mom would make."

The expensive care has already forced the family out of their home, which was foreclosed, and forced them to sell their furniture and to cash in their life insurance.

Tampabay.com put together an excellent video to accompany the story:

A family fallen on hard times after their 12-year-old daughter was diagnosed with a brainstem tumor has been served foreclosure papers, reports Elizabeth Prann of local NBC affiliate WJHG.

Amber Howard underwent surgery that could only remove part of the tumor. Her father, Neil, is the only member of the family who is able to work. Amber's weak immune system requires home-schooling. But the Howards don't let the situation keep them down.

The Howard family is fascinatingly optimistic, each one picking up the other when he or she is down.

"When she has a good day, that's when we charge our batteries!"

And if it's one thing none of them is lost is hope.

Amber is living proof.

"She said to me, God came to me mom. He told me, it's not my time. But I said, you can't remember Amber, you were asleep. She said no Mom, I remember! He came over, God came over and he talked to me, he said everything would be OK, it's just not my time," Shawn said.

Kenneth Hoagland, of Nashville, Tenn., was put in jail for getting a cold, reports Janell Ross of the Tennessean. Hoagland, previously bankrupted by a week-long stay in a hospital for his diabetes, was on a health insurance waiting period for a new job when what started as a cold landed him in a hospital for two days with a $1,200 tab. He could not pay, was afraid to miss work to show up in court, and was arrested on what's known as a "body attachment."

"They fingerprinted me, took my picture and asked some questions about my medical history," he said. "When the guy who tested (my blood sugar) asked me why I was there and I told him ... he said, 'I didn't know we did that in this country.' I told him, 'Until now, I didn't either.' "

The Tennessean reports that "Hoagland, 36, is one of the hundreds of thousands of Americans -- insured and uninsured -- facing collection suits, wage garnishments and, more rarely, trips to jail because of medical debt."

This shouldn't happen in our country. We have enough resources to treat everyone.

If you are fed up with the state of health care in our country, please visit:
www.MobilizeforHealthCare.org

We are kicking off a campaign to end insurance abuse and win health care for all. Almost 700 people have already pledged to participate in sit-ins and other nonviolent civil disobedience at health insurance company offices all over the country. These are everyday Americans and health care providers who are putting themselves on the line for the hundreds of people denied doctor-recommended lifesaving treatment every day. A large wave of these will be on Thursday, October 15.

Insurance companies that deny people the care they need are the real death panels.

We need solutions based on patients, not profit. We need Medicare for All!

what I want to know is....who's her doctor? Why is this woman martyring herself without a fight?
Surely her doctors would take the 80% her insurance pays and make some kind of payment plan for the 20% owed, even if it was only $10.00 a month! I mean...it is her eyes for Pete's sake!
Some people want to be victims for the attention, something is not right about this story - don't get me wrong - I am for single payer . " Where there is a will there is a way"

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:11 PM on 10/02/2009

I think it's a bit much to say she's doing it just for the attention without knowing the full facts. And until you've walked in someone's shoes I would be careful about accusing them of playing the victim.

Maybe a woman with a rare genetic disorder that requires very expensive medical care, should avoid having children, since they have a high probability of having the same unaffordable illness. I know, I know, everybody will think that's callous... we should all have kids without regard for the costs the rest of society incurs because our selfishness. Regardless of the 20 percent she can't afford to pay, I resent the 80 percent the rest of us are supposed to pay because of this woman's decision to have children.

So it's not you therefore she and they don't matter. Yeah, I interpret your rationale.

Think of it this way: What if her genetic illness was caused by pollutants you generate and your ancestors generated via going about your perfect lives?

But if it makes you feel better, I won't be having any children of my own. I'm a foster parent.

Please.... please.... please....STOP with this Republican -v- Democrat stuff.

I am a Southern, registered Republican...... BUT I worked for and voted for President Obama and I was not the only Republican to do so.

This should be about Americans.... for or against helping other Americans.

I completely agree with Chicagowoman32...Why would we want Government mucking up healthcare when their goals are to lower healthcare costs and to help people who really need it, when we can have corporate run healthcare whose goals are to increase Earnings Per Share and keep their multimillion dollar salaries!!

Private Health Insurance companies are in the business to MAKE MONEY. In fact, senior management and the board of directors have a legally binding fiduciary duty to act in the best interests of their SHAREHOLDERS not the people they are providing "services" to. Providing health services to individuals is just a means to their ends.

My point isn't that governement wouldn't "try" to lower the cost of health care. My point is that they don't have the ability to lower the cost of health care. While they might want to, that doesn't mean they'll have the ability to.

Quite honestly, I don't care if private health insurance companies make money...AS long as the people who purchase their products get reasonable health care and don't have to make a decision that this woman was forced to make. There is a difference between running a business and ripping people off.

Maybe health coverage shouldn't be a private business anymore. Major roadways aren't private and we all need those too--to get to work. Kind of hard to work when you have an illness and no insurer will cover you because it's a "preexisting condition" either.

But it's about more than insurance. It's about law too. Big Pharma shouldn't be able to hold on to intellectual property for life changing and life saving drugs for a *decade*. Meanwhile, the business environment needs to be improved for small generics producers so we won't have to import from Canada and Mexico and India. And we need to ensure that until that happens, Customs isn't seizing peoples' medications.

It'd also help if it didn't cost 150,000 to 250,000 dollars to become a M.D. to specialist M.D.

We can call Obama a socialist if I can call health insurance companies evil vampires who feed on human suffering.

This is a sickening situation. Truly depressing.

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:40 PM on 10/01/2009

I think the debate needs to be divided into two topics by Congress.
1) Make insurance companies accountable for paying claims. Making people pay 80% who are very sick can be a whole lot of money and that really isn't fair.

2) Public options is very different. That's making insurance available for everyone through a government run program. I don't want the goverment controlling my health care. Plain and simple. The government should regulate health care, but they aren't a business and they shouldn't run anything. Look at cash for clunkers. They can barely cut dealers checks and that is such a cut and dry issue.

I support making insurance companies accountable, but I don't support the governement running health care.

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:26 AM on 10/01/2009

I completely agree with number 1 in your comment. However, your stance against "government-run" healthcare/anything is just wrong. And the success of Cash for Clunkers? See: http://www.forbes.com/2009/09/02/cash-for-clunkers-toyota-ford-lifestyle-autos-auto-sales.html
"[The government isn't]... a business and they shouldn't run anything". You're right, the government is not a business. Government services are important, and I'm sure you use many of them, as everyone does in this country.

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:52 PM on 10/01/2009

Obviously cash for clunkers raised sales of automobiles superficially! I wouldn't label that a success. 1) what happens next year when sales YTD are down, do stock prices drop? You betcha! Will that affect the stock market? Uh huh. 2) What about the disposal of the engines? It's been suggested that destroying engines are very bad for the environment.

You know when you had to sell girl scout cookies or cheese and sausage to raise funds for school and somebody's rich parent bought everything from them and they won a new bike? That's cash for clunkers. Shift around $ and pat your self on the back. Doesn't mean it was a success.

Regardless, your list is funny. Are you suggesting Social Security is being run "well"? I guess if you are over 55 and you might see a penny. It's a system that I will contribute to my whole life and expected to go bankrupt the year I turn 65. Great example. Thanks for proving the point that the government has no business running something somewhat complicated.

If this isn't a perfect argument for health insurance reform, I don't know what is.

I emailed my eye doctor, who is a world-famous expert on inflammatory eye disease, asking if he could help this woman. He said that unfortunately the only help lies in gene therapy (which of course her insurance company will not pay for--if they did, she could enter a clinical trial at least.)

I wish that they would play this video in front of the Senate. They need a reality check about how cruel insurance companies are and how they couldn't care less about the needs of sick people.

My two nieces have Stickler's syndrome. Cate was born with impaired hearing which has gradually deteriorated. She now has less than 30% of her hearing left. Lauren was born with little hearing, less than 50% sight, a cleft palate and retracted jaw. Both have had multiple operations, treatments and physiotherapy over the last two decades at no cost to their family.

Cate's hearing has stabilised somewhat. She has a Masters degree in music and is, in addition a qualified audiologist. She works with disadvantaged children in remote areas in an educational and diagnostic capacity. Lauren has 35% of her sight, 70% of her hearing and is in her final year of a law degree. She debates internationally for her university and has completed a funded study module in Germany. She is currently an intern with Legal Aid.

Both are beautiful, sensitive young women who are acutely aware that their country has invested upwards of a million dollars in their health and development over their lifetimes. Both plan to productively return that investment by assisting those less advantaged than they.

They live in Australia. That country's economy does not appear to have buckled under the pressure of their healthcare.
