It's hard to bring up Roman Polanski without acknowledging his recently aggravated legal problems, but he remains one of the world's best known directors.

Polanksi began his career in Poland, where he grew up, spent some time in France and then came to Hollywood. He moved back to Europe after his wife's brutal murder by the Manson gang in 1969, returning to shoot 1974's 'Chinatown.' After fleeing the US for France in 1978 to avoid his statutory rape sentencing, Polanski continued to make movies in Europe. His career stagnated somewhat until 'The Pianist' in 2002, for which he received a directing Oscar in absentia.

Take a look back at the movies Polanski has directed and vote on his biggest hits and misses.

Maybe Polanski's next movie could be called "How I Love My Cell Next to Charlie's"

My absolute favorite without a shadow of a doubt is The Pianist.
Now about the rape.... a crime is a crime is a crime... and I'm as left as you can get without falling off a cliff. (ideologically speaking)

"Chinatown" is easily one of the best movies of all time! Jack at his best, Faye Dunnaway, Walter Huston, Walter Houston! How there is no empathy for a man who's wife got butchered? If we threw every hollywood director in jail who had sex with an underage willing starlet, you could probably put them ALL in jail! Lighten up!

Umm...he anally raped a 13 year old after drugging her. So tell me, did you do the same to a 13 year old so that you can make such informed comments?

The point is not whether you do or don't feel empathy for a man whose wife got butchered. If the he committed the crime he deserves the time.

My favorite will the one in which he'll star, and it should be called "Roman's Holiday: Polanski Goes to Prison"

The one where he rapes a minor, flees the Country to avoid prosecution, and then is extradited back to face his crimes. He is then supported by the same plastic people who shunned R- Kelly for his video taped sex acts with a minor. Didn't see the end, but I hear that he goes to jail for a long time to send a clear message to people that they are accountable for their actions even if they find a way to avoid justice for countless years.

Ibivi, what about Woody Allen? He wasn't charged with anything, but... I can't get over that one and avoid his movies.

No doubt about it. He has made some great films. I've seen most of them. But he did commit rape and needs to acknowledge wrongdoing.

I like the one where he spends the rest of his life in prison.

Polanski is just like Ted Kennedy. They both did the unspeakable a long time ago. Nothing either of them could do would make up for their actions. Well Roman can by paying his debt to society. That coward needs to face his obligation.

Don't come on the Huffington Post of all places and post garbage about Senator Kennedy. Have some respect.

my favorite is the one he's in right now...featuring him as a pedophile rapist who is apprehended...so where was Jack when this went down

I love Polanski for an old film which is not even listed here - "Fearless vampire killers". It's a superb comedy, one of the funniest films ever and on the shortlist of my favorites of any director.

Has everyone forgotten Rosemary's Baby which put Polanski on the map in America? I liked it. Just asking.

Oh, it's a great movie! Really ratchets up the tension. But I guess none of that matters now that America has found a fresh supply of false outrage for the director.

Yep...this is false outrage. False outrage over the anal rape of a 13 year old.

nah, cheesy fx, the book by Ira Levin was way better.
His best movie by far: frantic.
too bad he's a child rapist.

Sorry to have to disagree but R's Baby was not cheesy in the least. It was beautifully crafted. The book is usually better but Polanski did a top notch job on 'Baby' and other films he directed.

I saw it when it came out. Ruth Gordon was absolutely great in it. I loved it and wouldn't mind seeing it again.
