NEW YORK — CBS began the fall season with a bang, winning the first week overall, scoring the top-rated program and premiering the most-watched new show, according to Nielsen ratings figures released Tuesday.

CBS' veteran hit "NCIS" took the No. 1 spot, with its spinoff, "NCIS: Los Angeles," debuting in the runner-up position. Another new CBS drama, "The Good Wife," got a warm viewer welcome with a 15th-place ranking.

ABC's new Wednesday comedies "Modern Family" and "Cougar Town" did well, ranking 20th and 23rd, respectively, while that network's new thriller "FlashForward" nabbed 21st place with its premiere.

Other than football, NBC's top performers were its new hospital drama "Mercy" and long-running cop drama "Law & Order: SVU," which shared 38th place in viewer rankings.

Meanwhile, the infant season claimed its first victim among the new fall crop: The neglected melodrama "The Beautiful Life: TBL" was axed by the CW after just two airings.

For the week in prime time, CBS led with 11.77 million viewers (7.3 household rating, 12 share), with runner-up ABC averaging 11.04 million viewers (7.1 rating, 12 share). NBC was a distant third place with 7.56 million viewers (4.8 rating, 8 share), just ahead of Fox with 7.35 million viewers (4.3 rating, 7 share).

The CW had 2.17 million viewers (1.5 rating, 2 share), My Network TV had 1.36 million (0.9 rating, 1 share), and ION Television had 630,000 (0.4 rating, 1 share).

Among the Spanish-language networks, Univision led with 3.66 million (1.9 rating, 3 share), Telemundo had 880,000 (0.5 rating, 1 share), and Azteca had 200,000 (0.1 rating, 0 share).

Among the evening newscasts, NBC's "Nightly News" held its customary lead with 7.72 million viewers (5.2 household rating, 11 share), followed by ABC's "World News" with 7.27 million viewers (4.9 rating, 10 share). The "CBS Evening News" had 5.54 million viewers (3.8 rating, 8 share).

A ratings point represents 1,149,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 114.9 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.

For the week of Sept. 21-27, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewerships: "NCIS," CBS, 20.60 million; "NCIS: Los Angeles," CBS, 18.73 million; "Dancing with the Stars" (Monday), ABC, 17.79 million; NFL Football (Sunday): Indianapolis at Arizona, NBC, 17.47 million; "House," Fox, 17.16 million; "Grey's Anatomy," ABC, 17.03 million; "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," CBS, 16.01 million; "Criminal Minds," CBS, 15.84 million; "Dancing with the Stars" (Tuesday), ABC, 15.367 million; "Dancing with the Stars" (Wednesday), ABC, 15.356 million.

NCIS so original.

After CSI
CSI MIami
CSI New York
NCIS

Love the original thought these networks have.

Where have all the creative people gone?

Oh it's about taking a product and redoing it...just like pharmaceuticals ....calling it a different name although it's pretty much the same thing.

Easy money when you don't take chances!

Why not have CSI Los Angeles
CSI San Francisco
CSI Omaha
MCIS - marine
CSI Toledo
CSI Akron
CSI Newark

My husband and I really enjoyed the Unusuals. We knew that it was too good and unique of a show to last. Meanwhile, we are stuck with more and more horrific reality shows and unfunny sitcoms that seem to last.

It's nice to know that other people don't like reality TV, at work everyone talks about the Biggest Loser, and Idle. I feel like I'm not from the same planet. My husband and I drove from MN to NC to visit my mother this spring, and she made us sit through three nights of Dancing With the Stars. Now that was torture. I'm going to watch Modern Family for the 2nd time tonight, here's hoping it's good.

One night of watching Dancing with the Stars is torture. Three nights - I don't think that there is a word to express the horror! I am also giving the Modern Family some time. It does have a good cast. We shall see what happens!

I like NCIS, the casting is great, the writing is okay(some flaws but hey...) and the sound track is great too. But the new LA show isn't as good, the set up is wierd, its unbelievable, the set doesn't make sense, the whole premise makes them look like thugs and not Government agents.

I am thinking the exact same thing. While watching it last night, I thought it was stiff and not very enjoyable. The characters have no chemistry and the LL Cool J' s character always talking about how great "seals" were seemed stupid and childish. And that little old lady (I don't know her name) who was always giving advice was just plain weird. I am hoping it gets better and am willing to give it a chance to evolve. I'm not one to give up so quickly.

Linda Hunt is the little old lady, She played Billy Kwan in the Year of Living Dangerously. She usually is pretty good (I had hopes when I saw her) But I couldn't make it through one episode.

My favorite new show has got to be "The Good Wife." It has a great cast, and the writing is excellent.

The Good Wife week 2 was as impressive as week 1. Great writing and neatly keeping several story lines going without confusion and enough rope to reel you in for the next week. Nice.
Eastwick was pretty good reminded me not so much of TWOE but more of Practical Magic. It also has a certain Desperate Housewives ring to it...I searched for Mark Cherry's name to no avail. Still very very entertaining.
CSI got off to a stellar start...Jorga Fox is back.
Castle came back strong...so very Maddie and David in Moonlighting
Cougartown was funny because I actually know women that act like that...and I've been laughing behind their backs for years. They are clueless.
The Mentalist is excellent and has a great cast
I agree CBS looks like they will have a great year.

I agree with you but I made the mistake of watching it from the beginning to its conclusion.
It is only a 30 minute show.

Courntey Cox didn't speak her lines, she yelled them.
Disappointed. It's off of my DVR list.

I enjoyed Eastwick, How I met your mother (of course), NCIS rocks, Love Defying Gravity but I think ABC has axed it; why? Flashforward was cool and Joseph Fiennes is really nice to look at. Forgotten was so so, Modern Family was OK but I probably won't DVR anymore. I am so happy Medium was picked up cause I LOVE that show. Glee is good though that one girls attitude is starting to grate. Accidentally On Purpose is cute. Top Chef, Project Runway love those shows. Not really into any other reality shows. I love the Science Fiction, Magic, Witchy, Alien, Freaky stuff.

Let's see in a couple of weeks what's left standing. I swear these executives have ADD or something they pull things off before you get a chance to stand if you like them and replace them with crappy Reality Shows . . . BORING! And the Jay Leno Show? Give me a break that was not a good choice. Guess who is going to lose every day at the 10 PM time slot! SUCKERS!

I can actually agree with you on something. Being ex navy I like how detail oriented as far as Navy and Marine Corps customs go. They take great pains to use terms like "head" for the toilet and "deck" for the floor. The writing and research are superb. I'm not sure if they would actually do an incursion into Africa to rescue a Mossad agent, but the drama was great and classic DiNozzo. I think the fact that the dynamic between characters is part of the appeal. At the beginning of last season when the team was cast to the winds by Vance (still not sure I trust or like him) I don't think I could have watched it with them whole crew not together.

The cast is the strength of the show, even though exaggerated in some ways (Abby - would you REALLY expect to see a goth chick in a military facility?). My wife drools over Mark Harmon. And the stories are good.

This is our favorite show, and so we overlook the way too trendy gear in the HQ, the fact that McGee can track anyone real-time that is wearing a TImex, and other stuff that is just absurd.

They need to be careful about the truthfulness of some of the exterior shots, though. In last night's episode, McGee encountered Ziva having a coffee at a vendor's stand within walking distance of the Washington Navy Yard. It looked like a right pleasant setting. Well, I've been to the Navy Yard, and it is located in Southeast DC, and unless something has changed, that is about the most inhospitable part of town. A sidewalk vendor wouldn't set up shop there without an armed escort...

I just watched the rescue of Ziva, I had no idea of what was happening. This is one of the best shows on TV, the mysteries are pretty good, but the interactions of the characters is wonderful. They almost feel like family. I was impressed by the writing, how Ziva did not understand that they would come to rescue her. The killing of her brother and the resolution with Gibbs was very emotional. Great show. I saw bits of the new NCIS show, and it is not the same. Too many shows just like it. Does no one like Lie to Me? Another fascinating show.

Other than laughtrack Monday night, I think CBS has the best lineup this year.

Near the end of what's been a high decade for TV, NCIS is near the bottom of the creative pile.
