CHUCK KNOBLAUCH: Former Yankees Player Charged With Assaulting Common-Law Wife

HOUSTON (AP)--Former major leaguer Chuck Knoblauch has been charged with assaulting his common-law wife.

A judge set Knoblauch's bond at $10,000 after he appeared in court Tuesday. According to a criminal complaint, Knoblauch's wife told police he hit her in the face and then choked her at their Houston home on Friday.

Knoblauch's attorney did not immediately return a telephone call Tuesday.

The 41-year-old former infielder is a Houston native and a four-time All-Star who played for the New York Yankees, Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals from 1991-02.

Knoblauch was one of more than 80 players who were accused of using performance-enhancing drugs in the 2007 Mitchell Report on baseball's steroids era. Knoblauch later acknowledged using performance enhancers.

If must have been her fault for not running away. If you will recall, before every pitch, Knoblauch would step out of the batter's box and go through an agonizing ritual of loosing and adjusting his hitting gloves. This would have given her plenty of time to flee as he adjusted his gloves to grip her throat.

Common law? How about partner, companion, girlfriend, or fiance. Common law was established years ago for areas that only had traveling ministers. There was a simple ceremony then when the preacher came there was the actual wedding. If he didn't go through with the actual wedding then there was a shotgun wedding. If they never went through with it, that was common law. It really shouldn't exist now because preachers are everywhere, more's the pity.

Should we be shocked? I think we knew this, remember their have been a few more accused of violence and abuse since such as Kurt Angle(WWE Wresler) and others. In those cases, there were all kinds of "possible reasons".

This is just sad. In 1991, he was Rookie of the Year and starting second baseman for the World Champion Minnesota Twins. He used to have tons of talent and (we thought) limitless potential.

It just all went downhill from there. It's just sad.
