Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that the Robertson family was living in a storage unit. Save The Family Arizona supplied the family with a small apartment for themselves -- and a storage unit for their possessions. At no point was the family living in the storage unit. Save the Family doesn't place families in storage units.

As part of the Huffington Post's efforts to bear witness to the effects of the current economic environment on ordinary Americans, we're rounding up some of the most compelling stories reported by local news organizations around the country.

Bridget and Ed Robertson were a normal a middle-class couple from greater Phoenix, Arizona. Then, within just weeks of each other they were both laid off from jobs they'd had for years. Neither could get anything new despite hundreds of applications. They couldn't make their car payments or pay their rent. Soon, they found themselves homeless.

The Robertsons and their daughter, Sarah, moved into a small shelter apartment supplied by a local community service organization, Save the Family Arizona, which kept them from going on the street. The apartment was too small for most of their belongings, which now sit in a 12- by 25-foot storage unit. To make matters worse, Ed had a stroke in January, flooding the family with debt, and Bridget's father passed away recently, compounding the Robertsons' stress and anxiety.

Something often overlooked about homelessness is how embarrassing it can be, how it hurts people's dignity. The Robertsons tell Karina Bland of the Arizona Republic about the shame and guilt that comes from waiting in line at the food bank, Sarah's fear that other kids at her school will find out where she lives, how she now has to stay close to home when playing because of the lack of safety of their new neighborhood. These are emotional battles that are as real as the physical problems.

"I miss feeling like a man," Ed says, choking back a sob. When he used to come home on Friday nights with a paycheck in his pocket, he felt like he was providing for his family. He'd have the guys over, and they'd sit around in the garage, talking and drinking cold beer.

"When you're getting unemployment, and things are being given to you, you're not earning it," he says. "I'm grateful, but I'm not earning it."

DeWitt, Nebraska, a little over an hour south of Lincoln, used to be the classic mid-century industrial town: A factory hiring hundreds of workers, farms on the outskirts growing corn and wheat, picket fences and flags flying. It was a veritable Norman Rockwell painting. But the plant closed and the jobs were shipped to China, leaving an empty building and a heartbroken town, report Leslie Reed and Aaron C James of the Omaha World-Herald.

Story continues below

Former factory workers now find themselves lost; what was once a stable and respectable living has disappeared, and picking up the pieces of a dissipated career is turning into anxiety. Workers try other jobs, some retire, and some seek to go back to school, but all options are equally vexing and none allow the remnants of a working generation to feel as comfortable -- or as in control -- as they once did.

Janis Turner of Beatrice and Anita Oltmans of DeWitt are among those back in school after decades in the work force.

Turner, a single mother who raised her four children on her Vise-Grip paychecks, is studying to become a licensed practical nurse.

Oltmans, who worked 15 years at the plant, is studying agribusiness and hopes to find a job in a veterinary clinic after she graduates in December 2010.

Both felt like fish out of water.

"I had hardly used a computer," Oltmans said. "I took an English comp class, and we had to send assignments in as e-mail. I didn't know how to do any of that."

In the factory, she knew what she was doing.

Fewer state funds means a decrease in state services which, for the state of Maine, means that fire investigators are being pushed to the limits on their arson investigations. Those investigations have increased as result of the recession and foreclosure crisis. The state government's money has come up short, and a number of potentially intentional fires are left unexamined. The State Fire Marshal's office has been short on funds after its reserves were cut off to help balance the state's budget, reports Mal Leary of the Bangor Daily News.

Arson can be a sad end to financial troubles, as people try to get insurance money by destroying their own homes. On the flip-side are the thousands of homeowners who cannot afford and do not acquire home insurance, taxes of which would go towards the Fire Marshall budget. As a result, citizens suffer from a mangled system.

"Our investigators are literally running from fire to fire," State Fire Marshal John Dean said Monday. "Anyone that listens to the news or reads the paper everyday knows the numbers are up."

He said one investigator in his office has more than 70 open cases, some going back to last year. Dean said it can take a long time to complete the investigation and analyze all the forensic evidence with 12 investigators to cover the state.

"It's not unusual to have 75 people to interview in a case," Dean said. "With no reserves, we can't use overtime, so the backlog of cases continues to grow."

Bob Jordan, of Newport Beach, California, spends his days driving around Orange County, picking up leftover food from grocery stores and restaurants to give to the less fortunate. His organization, Share Our Shelves, distributes food to homeless and financially struggling families who are worrying about keeping their bellies full. But more people made hungry by loss of jobs and a shrinking economy means that Share Our Selves has had to increase its supply and stretch its dollars to meet the demand, and the group is now distributing 40% more food than last year. Patrons come from all backgrounds, of all ages, and in all different types of clothes. Michael Miller of the Daily Pilot, followed Jordan around for a day, and provides a look into one individual committed to keeping his neighbors fed.

"It's not something that's going to serve them the whole week," Jordan said en route to his first stop.

"It's supplemental food. A lot of them are on food stamps and get most of their food that way."

At the same time, Jordan -- and Share Our Selves' other drivers, who make the rounds six days a week -- know that every bite counts. The nonprofit gives out about 300 bags of food every day to people who can't afford to buy it, and Jordan makes a point to refuse nothing.

Potatoes are the agricultural symbol of Idaho, but farmers there are worried that harsh economic times will affect their crops' demand and put fewer potatoes on dinner plates across the nation. Danielle Grant, of Eastern Idaho and Western Wyoming's Local News 8, reports that there is no shortage of field hands to help farms harvest, especially among migrant workers, whose home economies are hurt worse than our own.

"If you work here, you can just live. And out there [Mexico] you can't even make it too good, so that's why we come out here to work," explained Nicholas Camrgo, who comes to the states to work.

Plowing through the potatoes, tooling around on tractors or raking up the remains; they do whatever it takes to get the job done.

"It's kind of hard work especially when it's cold, raining, snowing but what can you do," Camrgo said. "Just keep on going?" asked Danielle. "Just keep on going," he laughs.

But demand is down as fewer Americans dine out. Still, many are glad to have a job, even if it doesn't last. "This year, it's people that have lost their job and they're desperate for some income even if it is just for a few weeks," said one farmer.

If you want to see the "new America" drive through any cheap trailer or RV park in any city. I'm not talking about the resort parks I'm talking about low rent trailer parks. They are filled with people who once used their campers for vacations who now call them home. When you lose your job and home the camper has become the best solution. Low end trailer parks filled with campers with families living in them full time has become the picture of the "new America". For those still fortunate enough to have jobs be careful who you laugh at and scorn. Next month that family, could be yours.

True enough- and we are among them- in a slightly upscale RV park! After I lost my job and our home our family had to spend 2 months in tents at the state park before my severance pay came in and we could even afford the travel trailer. And we're glad to have it now. Our story is at http://theboxcarkids.wordpress.com/.

Fifteen years ago, I was writing constantly about globalization and outsourcing. It was as plain as the nose on my face that the new "information age" jobs that were going to replace traditional jobs was a trumped up theory that let people think it was alright to send manufacturing out of the country. I wrote extensively about the obscene salaries of executives but no one seemed to care as long as they could buy the next "must have" gadget. How could people not see what I saw clearly never ceases to amaze me.

The guys that exposed unbridled free trade as the ruse that it was were shot down by the paid off media as Wall street reaped profits.
Guys like Eamonn Fingleton were ignored, even though he was the former editor of Forbes and broke loose to tell the truth.
"If free trade has been so good for our standard of living then WHY has this nation's largest employer gone from high union wage benefits paying GM to low nonunion wage benefits skirting Walmart?"-Barbara Toncheff
If you were against free trade and a "global" economy they accused you of being backwards thinking. Now our living standard is 11% lower than 1972! THAT'S backwards!
Our founding fathers were protectionists, the men on Mt. Rushmore were protectionists. That's why there is Article 1 section 8 of our Constitution for Congress to regulater foreign trade with tariffs.
Those going against our founders are traitors in my mind and they are finally being exposed as the greedy profiteers that they are as the middle class wakes up from their blind faith of "cheap" goods is NOT good for them or the slave labor that makes them!

Watch Warren Buffet cartoon explaining the trade imbalance in "Thriftville vs Squanderville:"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DvuyvuHmJI

We've spent our societal savings and now running up our societal credit card so much so that we're threatened with destruction.

The US has the largest trade deficit in the world. This has to stop. We can't support the entire world if we can't support ourselves.

We must stop free trade and move toward fair trade.

Agree that we have to demand solutions from everyone in government, not just one party.

But Democrats don't "blindly follow" the party line.

Haven't you noticed? Like herding cats, but you get much better outcomes with healthy exchanges of ideas instead of the conservative goose-stepping into line.

Will Rogers said "I don't belong to any organized party. I'm a Democrat."

Sorry to say but including the plight of sex offenders will not win you support either. Conservatives are just looking for any excuse to judge people in need as unworthy of our compassion. Don't give them fuel for their hate machine.

Wow, this must be some of the "hope-n-change" we have been promised. Remember when Obama promised the unemployment would be held at 8% if we just accepted his stimulous package? It is now pushing 10%. Maybe if he had been telling the truth these people would still have their jobs and house. Welcome to Obamunism.....the final frontier.

Of course, you are completely wrong about the sub-prime crisis too.

http://www.prospect.org//cs/articles;jsessionid=aOkdtfZvpCJfLGY72Z?article=did_liberals_cause_the_subprime_crisis

"Did Liberals Cause the Sub-Prime Crisis? [short answer is "NO!"]

Conservatives blame the housing crisis on a 1977 law that helps-low income people get mortgages.

It's a useful story for them, BUT IT ISN'T TRUE."

Follow the money, Dude! Who is getting rich off all our misery? Sure ain't ACORN!

All these problems are working out great for the wealthy and big corporations.

Wealthy get bargain prices on stocks, property, luxury items... Corporations get a huge transfer of the wealth of working people from 401k investments in stocks etc. and when they lose that they get another huge transfer of wealth from working class taxpayers in the form or bailouts.

This depressing recession is only a win-win for the wealthy and the corporations that brought it about with the help of the conservative lackeys in government they bought and the conservative voters they brainwashed.

And don't forget many companies would be hiring if they didn't have to supply the workers with such expensive insurance coverage. The company my husband is with has moved half of it's manufacturing to China as well as layed off many. They are working 6 and 7 days a week rather than hire more people because he would have to pay for their insurance. Now that's a FACT!

Rent. Electricity. Water. Gas. Auto insurance.

I have a fairly good-paying job, and carry family health insurance coverage through my employer. My husband is self-employed, but looking for a job because he currently isn't making a steady income. We have no debt. Both cars are paid for, we have no credit cards, we don't have a mortgage, and we have a decent amount of savings. Aside from everyday expenses, the only bills we have are listed above. We consider ourselves very fortunate to be where we are, even though my husband went from making almost $200k three years ago to a paycheck here and there today.

If I got laid off tomorrow, we would be in trouble. My family would be without health insurance, and none of our basic living expenses would be paid without us tapping into savings. Prolonged unemployment, or an accident or illness, could totally wipe out our savings account quickly. Then what happens? Could we end up living in a tent, like my daughter's seatmate on the school bus?

It's disturbing to read the cold, heartless responses by some posters on this thread. I wonder how many of them realize how easily they could find themselves in a situation far worse than the ones depicted in this story, no matter how firm their financial footing seems right now. Really, what does it take for someone to muster up some sympathy for the pain and suffering of others?

So right!

We live in a country where even SUPERMAN* had to sue his insurance company to get care!

It can happen to any one of of us at any time no matter how much money you have or how responsible YOU are, you can still be hit by a truck and lose everything.

Some compassion and Christian charity is certainly called for.

We should be thankful for storage units and I say this seriously.
Expect thousands additional Americans living INstorage. Myself included-if-we-can't-turn-this around. The world is laughing at Egomaniac-In-Chief (egocentric term came from Paris), laughter comes fromParis aswell. Americans are grimacingwith the new visionless leadership America is facing. EnoughAlready!

Pres"O" has a General to ignore, Iranian threat to shush other foreign-leaders-about, an Olympics game to bring to his hometown, while ignoring a humongous health care fiasco, rampant US manufacturing, industrial, construction, managerial, financial sectors job-loss to the extent that Americans are losing-everything.

Can't sell/buy cars at tax payers expense to benefit the unions only to have them repo'd when we lose our precious jobs, move into stroage units. Doesn't anyone realize WHY Whitacre was given his cushy GM job? Political payback and this very same issue will destroy this nation.

I am trying my part in reviving the American workforce. It's YOU good people who think you can ride his rapidly sinking ship to prosperity that need to stand up and realize we need REAL change.

Help save the country from Change voted for. It's much easierto complete the real changewhile UNITEDrather than while divided. Drop the fanfare stars in your eyes and realize we need to work together against what is very quickly killing our futures.

The last administration spent 8 years undoing this country. Give the president a break.

It is so typical conservative break something then point to it and say it is broken.

We are not deceived. We know where the problem is. Conservative policies and practices brought us here. They won't get us out of this mess.

He can't correct everything conservatives have done wrong since Reagan. Don't say anything about Iran BTW. Conservatives have done so much to create problems there we need to finally leave them alone. If they were really worried about Iran they wouldn't have gotten into bed with them and stayed there. That is the conservative tactic, blame the victim for the problems conservatives actually cause. For example, conservatives say "unemployed people are lazy" and not "we stacked the deck against you by shipping jobs overseas and bringing in foreign workers."

Most unemplyed people have been used as a stepping stone for the people who made it difficult for US corps to operate in the US. The same protestors and eco nuts who then lobbied congress to come up with the opportunity for the corps to hire slave labor across the border and overseas while over-regulating and over-taxing the job suppliers. Their solution to the problems they caused? NAFTA and GATT.. Even if we sell more big ticket items like tractors and sch, the corps greed does not stop with saving a dollar.. they want it all.

I expect to keep all Mealer Companies LL manufacturing in the US, even if it costs me a bit of profit.. Americans need jobs whether they are liberals who made mistakes or conservatives who made mistakes.

Most of you know my situation by now and I simply will not give up posting here. Until my internet is shut off and I am homeless, I have to believe there is an angel out there.
Look, I never saw this coming and no one can prepare for the 'perfect storm' that hit me...my case is a little unique. We (the displaced) get caught up in the cycle where a person can't find work, yet hasn't enough means to GO somewhere else where they may be work. Certainly can't rent a place with a contract and default on that and ruin your credit all the while looking for work. Catch-22. Poverty Spiral in action.
Like I've said, I don't food or clothes at the moment. All I need is an opportunity...a job. I can' t rent a place until I know I've gotten past the 90 day probationary period most employers have...See?
Why is there no safety net or federal mechanism that could catch people in my position before we fail totally? I'm an intelligent guy...but this situation...well....I can't figure a way out. Honestly....

God bless America! Land of the greedy and the disadvantaged. I went on the community board site at Muskogee, where Senator Coburn lives. For every bigoted statement they made I answered back. It took them about six months and then they closed the down the site. No discussion allowed in Muskogee. Coburn is a distant relative of mine. My family has had a wonderful reputation since the founding of the Republic. In one generation Coburn has destroyed that reputation and tied us to the exploiters. They sing "God Bless America" while believing in the theories of Superman. They have destroyed the gentle Christianity that I knew and replaced it with the bigotry of the old Klan. The only free they know is the "Free to be dumb." How could America consider such greed and incompetence OK? First you distract the people with overwork and then you refuse to teach their children. Republicans have become evil.

Did you know that virtually ALL frozen potato products originate in Idaho?

Did you know that virtually ALL fast food places rely on Idaho potatoes?

You are going to have a lot of boycotting to do if you intend to prevent people from eating frozen or fast tood potatoes.

Good luck.

We have to help these people connect the dots.

I'm amazed when displaced farmers look out their apartment window at what was once their land being operated by conservative backed agribusiness and say "environmentalists deprived me of my livelihood" with evidence to the contrary right before their very eyes.

That is one he// of a job of brainwashing!

So do you blame the brainwashed or the brainwashers?

I say the brainwashers.

Republicans and conservatives are using non-stop 24/7 propaganda to destroy this country and they are using the public airwaves (and public right-of-way in the case of cable), part of our nation's common wealth, to destroy us from within.

The Mercedes Benz Song

(co) Written & Performed by Janis Joplin in 1970,

Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends.
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?

Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a color TV ?
Dialing For Dollars is trying to find me.
I wait for delivery each day until three,
So oh Lord, won’t you buy me a color TV ?

Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a night on the town ?
I’m counting on you, Lord, please don’t let me down.
Prove that you love me and buy the next round,
Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a night on the town ?

That could be today's generation's theme song.

Especially amongst "liberals." It appears liberal means "People should buy me stuff I can't afford."

Sad, sad, sad. . .

Again, typical Republican tactic, blame the victim for problems created by conservatives. And you throw in the second common tactic, projecting your own flaws onto others (calling hard working people greedy and irresponsible for example).

We're not buying buddy!

If folks can't afford the BASICS, food, clothing, shelter, medical, in what we suppose is the richest country in the world, WE HAVE DONE SOMETHING WRONG.

In your Bible does Jesus command you to judge and ridicule the poor, the hungry, the homeless? No.

Jesus commanded us to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, heal the sick and to treat the least among us as though they were Jesus himself.

Try to show to Christian charity to your fellow man. If for no other reason, do it b/c it'll bite you in the end.
