NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Robin Roberts, co-host of ABC's "Good Morning America" and a breast cancer survivor, will be guest announcer this Friday during a special Grand Ole Opry show promoting research about the disease.

Roberts, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007, will introduce acts during the long-running live country music show.

According to a news release from the Opry, Carrie Underwood will flip a switch turning the Opry's signature red barn backdrop pink in support of breast cancer research.

Roberts has written a book, "From the Heart: Eight Rules to Live By," which chronicles her experiences since being diagnosed.

I think this is wonderful. She has been so brave through her breast cancer fight. Robin, Welcome to Nashville. Hope you enjoy your time here and enjoy the Opry. (The Grand Ole Opry is something everybody should do once in their life, country music fan or not.)

people are so cynical.

I think it's inspiring that Ms. Roberts is doing this. Not only is she a breast cancer survivor, but doing this also helps further break down stereotypes of country music. Can anyone really imagine an African American woman as a guest announcer at the Grand Old Opry 20 years ago?

Standing ovation to everyone involved!

Oh MY GOODNESS!!!! HOW EXCITING.

IS this where the newspeople become celebrities themselves?

this has no relevance to anyone but ms. roberts and her family and friends. the entire USA really could care less.

Not a story, just copy and paste kinda story.

The Grand Ole Opry is the longest running LIVE radio show, on the air over 80 years. It's audience via WSM-AM radio and the internet is huge. For years celebrities outside of country music have been thrilled to serve as guest announcers on the Opry, not only that but on any given Saturday night you can run into people as diverse as members of ZZ Top, Bon Jovi, The Moody Blues and actors, actresses, writers, sports figures, all who revere the Opry. The late Anna Nicole Smith attended a few years ago and saw country artist Joe Nichols preform and was so impressed that he was asked to sing at her funeral.

I don't get the connection. Is Ms. Roberts a country music lover? From what I have seen of her, she appears to be a good commentator and appears to be kind, and knowledgeable about her craft.

Perhaps this is good timing and an indirect visibility vehicle for promoting her book which is about her journey with Breast Cancer? I am not sure. It just seems to bit suspect.

None the less, I know she will do a good job.

Because the show is promoting research about the disease. Read the whole article.

I searched over 4 articles to find out and none of them mentioned the point of the show was to spotlight Caner issues.

Please post a link that outlines that fact please. It would be helpful. Thanks.
