Changing The Game By: Leading with missionary zeal a growing movement of gardeners on a quest to promote the culinary, health, and climate change benefits of growing your own food. His dogged “Eat the View” web campaign helped convince the Obamas to turn a chunk of the White House lawn into a vegetable garden. The campaign used viral videos and social networking, inspiring other liked-minded grassroots efforts. Symbolism was key: Doiron hopes having the First Family lead by example will create “a ripple effect across the country and across the world.”

Historical Perspective: Eleanor Roosevelt planted a White House garden in 1943 and spawned the Victory Garden movement across the nation during wartime. By the end of the war, 40 percent of America’s produce was grown in home gardens.
