What's Your Reaction?

First Lady Michelle Obama capped off her second day in Copenhagen by attending the opening ceremonies of the the 121st International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session at the Copenhagen Opera House on Thursday night. She was with fellow Chicagoan Oprah Winfrey. The first lady wore a pumpkin colored dress while Oprah went for black ruffles.

See photos of what Michelle was wearing in Copenhagen on Wednesday and Thursday.

Scroll down for the pool report.

From the pool report, written by the Washington Post's fashion writer Robin Givhan:

Your pool was on hold on the second floor foyer of the Opera House at about 5:20pm when guests began to arrive to the strains of a chamber orchestra.

The setting, Copenhagen's Opera House, home to the Royal Danish Orchestra -- among several Royal Danish musical ensembles -- was glorious. The building, with its central sphere-shaped auditorium, sits waterside. There were dramatically overcast skies with just a bit of early evening sun glinting off the water. Boats sailed along the waterway and historic buildings were visible in the distance.

Story continues below
advertisement

Inside, small tables covered in white linen were sprinkled throughout but the only munchies your pooler could see were breadsticks. Where pray tell were the canapes? Perhaps they arrived after your pool was ushered into the auditorium.

The delegations arrived and sat grouped together stage right. Oprah Winfrey - hair smooth and pulled off her face was dressed in black (sorry, couldn't see the full frock) and seated to the right of Chicago mayor Richard Daley. They were up front although not in the front row.

7:02 Lula is in the house -- President of Brazil, that is. Waves. Hugs. Cameras focus on him.

Michelle Obama arrives in a pumpkin satin cocktail dress - full skirt, sleeveless and with criss-crossing straps in the back. No, it is not a warm evening in Copenhagen. But there is no weather in a motorcade. She sits to Oprah's right. No sign of Valerie Jarrett, but alas, your pooler does not have bionic eyes. So to recap: We have in a row, Daley, Oprah, Mrs. Obama.

We do not manage to eyeball other heads of state.

Ceremony begins with the Danish National Anthem and that is followed by the Olympic hymn.

Speeches ensue by various Olympic officials including IOC president Jacques Rogge. Welcoming remarks from Danish prime minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen, who manages to merge athleticim with global warming - referencing the upcoming summit on climate change that will take place in Copenhagen.

Then the dancing began. First up was the Jockey Dance by The Royal Danish Ballet.

Next was "Uncontaminated" a fabulously dramatic modern ballet performed by dancers in chocolate brown leotards and a perfectly exquisite lead ballerina.

Next came a song about springtime in Denmark. Then more classical ballet.

The Danish National Girls Choir sings "Plant a Tree." The song is all about uplift and what the individual can do to make the world a better place. A psychedelic tree grows on a video screen behind the girls who end their song by posing like trees.

The Youth Ballet of the Royal Danish Theater performs -- ballet, hiphop, jazz -- and exude much youthful vigor and underscore a message that the youth are our future. Much charm oozed across the stage.

The evening ends with a George Balanchine ballet "Symphony in C." It was performed by the Royal Danish Ballet. Music by Bizet.

Your pool was hustled through the mingling and eating dignitaries. (The food arrived!!!) A Frank Sinatra song "The Lady is a Tramp" is being crooned as we make our exit.

I personally didn't think that the Olympics should be used as an exscuse to clean up a city that needs some work..If the Mayor has this "fund" for the Olympics, pray tell why can't he find some money for something less vainglorious like cleaning up slums and the schools in them.. I thought the First Lady and Oprah represented us very well..But I have to believe she misspoke when she said "sacrifice".. While I find her life story interesting, on a world stage, I am not sure of it's relevance to that particular audience. Our idea of "poor" is very different from that of other countries.

I'm happy for Brazil for being chosen to host the 2016 Olympics. It will be South America's first Olympics. If Chicago had been chosen, Obama's inflated ego would've overshadowed the 2016 Olympics. This narcissistic, micromanaging President got his rude awakening--he's not King of the World after all. He can go home now and nurse his ego, and then focus on IMPORTANT issues like Iran, Afghanistan, the economy...

King of the world? Why, because he globally unites instead of divides? Would you respect him more if he were isolationist-imperialist?
Narcisisstic? Why, because he gives inspiring speeches and the majority of the country voted for his message of progressive, meaningful change?
Micromanaging? I wish he were micromanaging. Then we would have had a healthcare reform bill signed by now.

Oh the sacrifice Michelle is making on our behalf. I mean look at her, I'll bet she had to go the opera in some $6000. rag of a dress and probably didn't get much sleep because those operas run late... I just wish I could some how share that sacrifice. Oh...wait, I am! My tax dollars are paying for it all! If it wasn't so sad it would be comical.

I just want to say that I am so proud of our president and the first lady. At first I thought it was tacky them pitching for the Olympics while school children were being killed in the streets. But I just found out that the AG, Eric Holder is head to Chicago to address the problem and that the president himself is crafting a response to violence and plans to address it. So they didn't disappoint. I guess a person can do more than one thing at once, lol.
Also even some of her most ardent critics have to admit...that our First Lady has looked absolutely stunning these past couple of weeks. From the UN, to G20 and Copenhagen...she has hit a bunch of fashion home runs. It feels good even with everything that's going on to know that people like the Obamas are representing us to the rest of the world.

Isn't crime an issue for local law enforcement? Chicago is a city that may have more murders then NYC with 1/3 the people. The Olympics should be the last thing on their minds.

I think the Obama's best friend Ms. Jarrett was hoping her slum properties would shoot up in value if Chicago could bring the Olympics home. Sadly, for her, she must now fix them up or take a huge loss. Valerie Jarrett is the President's Olympic Campaign Czar

Funny how the crybabies who complain about President Obama putting in an effort to get the Olympics for an American city were all citing Twitt Romney as a "hero" because he "saved" the Salt Lake City Olympics, and claiming that as a reason we should elect him President. No double standards there. Nuh, uh.

Because too many Black people STILL in present day America are conditioned to think their hair is inferior. If it looks too nice (by their standards) it MUST be fake. Sad but true.

Unfortunately there are still too many blacks who feel that a woman who looks like Oprah could not possibly have such luxuriant natural hair, but it is indeed her own natural hair as girlhood photos will testify. I have an ebony-skinned cousin whose abundant raven, all-natural tresses fall nearly to her waist. This is a common characteristic among blacks who are part Native American, as Oprah is.

I can't wait to see what all this cost us to send Mr. & Mrs. POTUS to Denmark on separate planes plus all of the support staff just to pay back all of their Chicago cronies. If the Bushes had pulled a stunt like this the global warming/carbon emissions crowd would be doing backflips.

Just when I thought that conservatives can't be any more petty, you guys show up and prove me wrong. I'm sure that their trip didn't cost nearly as much as the 480 days Bush spent staring at brush with Barney in Crawford or the over 400 days he spent staring at Barney at Camp David. Both sets of trips yielded nothing for our country, as it spiraled out of control.

Anyone with good sense knows that jobs are the last thing to show up in a recovery, yet the President pushing for something that will bring jobs brings disdain from to0ls like you.

No doubt this trip cost many millions of dollars. At LEAST 3 jumbo jets had to participate. One each for POTUS and FLOTUS....plus the support 747. All to pay back Mayor Daley for his support. I suspect Chicago will win the bid or they wouldn't have been so foolish to fly all those people over there. If not.....HUGE embarrassment for the White House.
