Reid Appeals Directly To Obama: Help Us Repeal Don't Ask, Don't Tell

What's Your Reaction?
Reid

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid ramped up the pressure on the White House and the military to repeal its "don't ask, don't tell" policy with a direct appeal to President Obama and Defense Secretary Robert Gates last week.

In letters to Gates and Obama dated Sept. 24th and obtained by HuffPost, the Nevada Democrat asks each to "bring to Congress your recommendations on DADT" -- the policy that allows gay or lesbian Americans to serve in the military as long as they don't mention that they are gay or lesbian.

The policy, which is not applied consistently, has nevertheless cost the military valuable soldiers, sailors, pilots and translators.

Reid called for the policy to be repealed earlier this year and former president Bill Clinton, who instituted it, has called it one of his chief regrets.

A legislative fix could be difficult; it is not at all clear that the Senate could find 60 votes to overcome a likely filibuster. Reid, therefore, is calling in Obama.

"As Congress considers future legislative action, we believe it would be helpful to hear your views on the policy," he writes. "Your leadership in this matter is greatly appreciated and needed at this time."

Reid, in the letters, also highlights the plight of two servicemen, one of whom he met when he was the keynote speaker at a recent Las Vegas Human Rights Campaign Gala Dinner. First Lieutenant Daniel Choi was a West Point grad, served in Iraq and was an Arab linguist. In April, he received a discharge letter from the Army after publicly revealing he was gay, Reid writes to Obama.

Lieutenant Colonel Victor Fehrenbach is headed for a "similar fate," Reid tells Obama. He was an 18-year Air Force vet who has flown numerous missions against Taliban and al-Qaida targets, "including the longest combat mission in his squadron's history." The government, Reid notes, has invested $25 million on his training.

Freshman Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) has been taking the lead in the Senate on the repeal of DADT. She considered attaching an amendment to undo it to the 2010 defense department appropriations bill, but without 60 sure votes and with Obama taking no clear stand, the effort devolved into a hearing instead.

Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs has said that the president wants to see the policy repealed, but has other legislative priorities that must be addressed first.

Interesting. This means Obama had to be cajoled into "working with Congress" on DADT, something he said he was ALREADY doing when he addressed the HRC last Saturday. Either he did some doubletime work to actually work with Congress over the past few weeks, or he was, dare I say it, lying.

A Nobel laureate would give Harry Reid the recommendation he asked for.

"A legislative fix could be difficult; it is not at all clear that the Senate could find 60 votes to overcome a likely filibuster. Reid, therefore, is calling in Obama."

The President signed an order Sept 14 to continue the emergency status during war..." Congress has authorized the President to suspend any law regarding military separations during national security emergencies."

http://www.whitehouse.gov/the_press_office/Notice-of-continuation-from-the-President-regarding-the-emergency-declared-with-respect-to-the-September-11-2001-terrorist-attacks/

This gives the President the ability to suspend the discharge of gays from the military. For the next year. For his term, but Not indefinately. Not changing the law. NOT REPEAL. NO REPEAL. It is not legal for the President to repeal DADT.
It is not legal for the President to repeal DADT.

It is Congress who must repeal DADT. The President can only suspend separations caused by DADT. Yes, until his presidency ends......not a definate date, therefore, you are incorrect. The President of the United States of America CANNOT REPEAL DADT.

Please do not misrepresent my President.

Again, your argument is the same as saying Elvis Presley wasn't dead until the doctor signed the death certificate.

An executive order from the President banning the use of DADT means the law is no longer in effect and cannot be as long as the order stands.

Laws are repealed and reinstated all the time at all levels of government. Yet an Obamacon (aftershock) was here insisting that the President had no authority to stop DADT and the only way a law is repealed is the way he said.

It was nonsense.

Obama is afraid to take on DADT. He's a coward.

Keep the change.

Correct. The President cannot repeal DADT, but he CAN suspend it until it's repealed.

Apologize for what? Obama, as usual, has only made promises. He has done NOTHING to prevent an average of 2 gay servicepeople from being discharged, and having their lives unnecessarily ruined, every single day.

When he actually does something, I will applaud it.

I am sick to death of his empty promises and, yes, his outright lies.

For the record, I was someone worked very hard in helping him get elected.

Fool me once....

Now that it’s obvious both that Obama had a strategy for getting rid of DADT and that the strategy will work, can he expect any apologies from his critics?

This is Harry Reid's attempted to deflect the criticism on his handling of Health Carein the Senate. It the same age old tactic, when you don't like the subject, change to subject. Reid is screwing up Health Care, so he need us to focus on something else, so he is willing to throw President Obama under the bus to get himself off the hot seat. Harry Reid needs to be stripped of his position of Senate Majority Leader. He is worthless.

It appears Obama doesn't care much for us gays so I'm not holding my breath on him being proactive. Anyway, he's too busy travelling the world giving pretty speeches to be proactive on anything.

It appears you're correct.

Barack Obama was an African American, liberal Democrat just long enough to get elected. Now he's back to being a self-absorbed, dishonest political Reaganite.

Kudos to Rev. Jeremiah Wright for calling it perfectly.

Keep the change.

Out come the PUMAs and Clinton-is-god crowd! First, Harry: mice can't herd cats, true. He's endangering hcreform, to add LGBT issues now would make his sweaty hands lose what grip they've left. NV is hardly a pro-LGBT state, so he's trembling nose-to-tail to salvage hcreform and hold on to his seat.

Now for Bill Clinton: First extraordinary rendition policy after 1993 WTC bombing. First Blackwater contract after USS Cole bombing. Welfare deform pushing millions of women/children into poverty w/working moms still unable to earn a living wage, safe childcare, or health coverage. Continuation of Drug War with concurrent prison-growth. And of course failing to pass hcreform. And more Wall St deregulation.

Now on POTUS repealing DADT law vs congressional process. Repeals can be reversed if/when Repubs regain WH. New law forbidding discrimination in armed forces can only be repealed in congress and they'd need a Repub POTUS to sign it. As law (not repeal), it can be appealed up to Supreme Court, and still hold unless it's deemed unconstitutional. For longevity, Congress is where it must pass.

After/if Harry gets meaningful hcreform passed and reelected, he could grow a spine, or at least get out of the way.

Harry Reid is getting out of the way because President Obama made the PROMISE to end DADT to get votes and endear himself to the liberal Democrats as part of his charade to get elected.

It isn't Reid's job to keep Obama's promises.

Now, an executive order from prohibiting the armed forces from applying the DADT policy ends DADT. Silly Obamacons, fishing for any possible excuse or way to pass the buck are trying their best to parse words on one hand and avoid words on the other.

The president can repeal DADT with a pen and paper and that repeal is in full effect upon signature...its a de-facto repeal of DADT. "As President of the United States I hereby order the armed forces to no longer apply DADT as military policy" That's it. Sign your name and that's it.

But Obamacons trying to argue that Frank Sinatra isn't deceased until the death certificate is signed miss the boat by about a light year. What liberal Democrats and the LGBT community wants is for Obama to grow a spine and keep his word to stop DADT and Obama isn't keeping his word.

Period.

Furthermore.

The legacy of President Clinton is intact and in the history books. America has never had a better 8 years across the economic spectrum (and especially for black America) than we did when President Clinton was running the country.

Barack Obama will never reach that zenith. Ever.

Don't "hate"...appreciate.

And keep the change.

"America has never had a better 8 years across the economic spectrum (and especially for black America) than we did when President Clinton was running the country."

Real wages for Americans grew by less than 1% from 1979-2003. Boy, Clinton sure helped all Americans across the economic spectrum there huh?

How about you grow a pair, Harry. You're painfully out of touch and are more concerned about Senate "decorum" that actual lawmaking. This life-long progressive hopes you get your hat handed to you next year.

After Harry grows that pair, maybe he can lend them to President Obama who promised the progressives that he'd stop DADT. Oops, that was just more BS from BHO to get votes wasn't it?

Obama fails to keep his word, blame the nearest Democrat.

It's not working anymore.

He will sweetheart. He will. It's not all up to him. Nothing is. You hurt. So do I. It's hard to wait. It's hard to think we don't matter, that we take last place. But we are so close. Closer than we could ever hope for. Look at it from our history, not from last year. Give him a chance. Keep up your voice......I'm not saying be quiet...I'm saying don't lose hope because we weren't the biggest deal since his inauguration...keep it up. We all will. I will never stop. But don't abandon him because our cause hasn't been fullfilled. He is the best thing we have going for us. At least now. right now. let's see what we...WE ...can do.

"Bush repeals steel tariffsPittsburgh Business Times - by Christopher Davis
President Bush decided Thursday to end his steel tariff program early, drawing fire from some industry circles and praise from others.

The Bush administration contended the tariffs, in the roughly 21 months that they were in place, had given the steel industry sufficient breathing room to consolidate and restructure, after being pummeled by cheap foreign steel that had flooded the domestic market for years.

"I listened to an International Trade Commission report about the effects that steel imports were having upon our important industry," Mr. Bush told reporters during a briefing in the Oval Office.

"I acted. I acted to give the steel industry time to adjust," Mr. Bush added. "I acted in time for us to say to the world that we will trade, but we want to trade in a fair way."

In a compromise attempt, the president on Thursday offered a plan that would monitor steel imports and alert federal officials if certain foreign steel began to flood the U.S. market again.

Still, his decision angered tariff supporters, including Pittsburgh-based United Steelworkers of America president Leo Gerard."

Why were they so upset? Didn't these fine folks know that the President of the United States can't repeal anything and repeals are ONLY done by Congress and ONLY done the way some random Obamacon who knows zilch about law (because he's a layperson) says?

Gosh.

Keep the change.

Rep. Murphy has 176 co-sponsors to a House bill to repeal DADT. Co-sponsors join regularly and Murphy believes that DADT can be repealed this Fall.

He needs your help, but he is not waiting for Harry Reid to get some courage.

I guess Harry Reid is a coward and uninformed. Senator Gillibrand is proceeding in the Senate. She reports "Senator Carl Levin, Chairman of the Armed Services Committee, has agreed to hold the first Senate hearing on repealing DADT this Fall."

Can Reid even ATTEMPT to do his job?

Can he come up with a single idea of his own? He is supposed to do legislation and he wants the President to do his job for him.

Time for Harry Reid to go.

I guess he is uninformed about the House bill, with almost 170 sponsors, being led by Rep. Murphy. Or, I guess he is unaware that Senator Gillibrand is willing to take the lead in the Senate since Reid is such a lightweight.
