What's Your Reaction?

Jon Stewart went off on Senate Democrats last night for failing to get their health care reform plan past the Senate Finance Committee despite having a super majority. The Democrats had the numbers on the committee, but several members of their party voted against the amendments despite 65% national approval for the plan. Stewart argued that the "Democrats couldn't get laid in a house [where people's] sole purpose is to have consequence and disease-free sex with legislators on finance committees."

The more things change the more they remain the same. As a lifelong democrat, now independent(after the democratic congress passed the 890 billion dollar Wallstreet bailout) I can state honestly that I truly HATE THE DEMOCRATS more then the Republicans. With Obama in office and a democratic Congressional majority, you see the TURE COLORS of this party. Anyone still think they care about average americans???? Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid care about their Wallstreet friends, there hedge fund buddies, their trial lawyer friends, their friends in corporate america, there asskissing to MADD with crazy DUI laws, their bootlicking tfor domestic violence laws so lawyers have more work, their love of drug laws that destroy people's lives and allow lawyers to extort more money from average americans, and on and on. I have come to hate the democratic party and all the people who want to make nice with Republicans. At least Bush and Cheney had the courage of their convictions, we are a party of spineless
concensus building do nothing losers. Obama, you are on notice, pack your bag b*tch.

The Brits have a nasty habit of DISSOLVING their own legislative assembly (the Parliament), if they don't like it. If after a few pints of beer in the Congressional cloakrooms, the Majority Party Senators cannot count straight and think they're the Minority Party, and the Minority Party thinks it's the Majority Party, then majority does not mean majority, and minority does not mean minority, and majority rules means minority rules, and minority rules is the same as majority rules, then it's time to let the Brits invade Washington DC, and declare USA the 14th colony of the Brits Empire. Then Prime Minister Mr. Brown would have the wherewithal legal right and authority to call on the Queen to dissolve Congress, on account of its feeble inability to count straight. A new election would be called and quickly settled within 2 months. A sober new Congress that can count straight will be elected by the people of the new colony.

Then the Queen could graciously endow this new colony with the Magna Carta as the new Constitution, and grant USA a renewed status of independence and majority rule under the new ancient tradition of "government of the people, for the people, by the majority rule of the people". America would then be given a democratic rejuvenation or "NEW AMERICAN RENAISSANCE" (to replace the obsolete Project for New American Century).

Well, it all sounds so simple, maybe Jon Stewart can explain how this works on his next show.

It wouldn't be enough to say america is one of the last holdouts for socialized medicine but it's enough to make most future immigrants and citizens wanting a better quaility of life,to go to Europe.

Bah! So far from the single-payer that's really needed, yet so seemingly impossible for Senate Democrats to even go to the public option. The writing was on the wall back in May when Baucus wouldn't even let single-payer advocates into his caucus meeting on health care. He knew that might create a real debate rather than this hodgepodge of a mess there is now that the health companies can salivate over.

I'm so sick of these people who keep saying he's only had nine months. Obama's shown his stripes in these nine months and I don't like them. My G od, you can have a baby in nine months!

I am more disappointed with Obama's lack or Progressive leadership than I've been with any President because he could have been the greatest and chose to be a nobody and a do nothing!

I agree. If only Obama would look ahead and lead instead of looking side to side to see what the Repubs have to say. Enough with being friends and bi-partisanship! Lead this country the way the PEOPLE want you to go! People are hungry for change! Enough with the status-quo!

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:07 PM on 10/04/2009

I agree. To bypass the wingnuts Obama could "invite" a public demonstration of support for a public option, or even arrange a plebiscite on the matter. He has options, if he wanted to exercise them. It seems he doesn't.

The only way to beat this fiasco is for people to organize and demonstrate. A million people in the Washington Mall, and another Million on the streets of LA, or somesuch, would focus Obama's attention like nothing else. And it's not as if there is any lack of support for a public option - a clear majority of the country want it!

I fight all the time to bring issues to my uninformed co-workers, neighbors, friends and football mom acquaintances. No body really gives a sh*t until an issue effects them personally. BTW I have been branded the "hippie" mom, even though I don't look or live an iota of the part.

Progress and reform will never truly come to Washington D.C. as long as there are Democrats and Republicans. The American people are stupid for accepting two party rule when our Constitution allows ample room for a third, fourth, fifth, or any number of parties. Let this country keep declining... that's what we get for being such a complacent electorate. And, let's face it, the American masses are NOT going to rise up any time soon, if ever, because we're too self-absorbed with other things. It's like when you throw a party and a bunch of people say they'll come, but when it comes time for the actual party, only so many people actually show up. Anybody who puts their faith in the American electorate to correct the situation in Washington DC is a fool setting themselves up for severe disappointment. Me, I'll just sit back and enjoy our decline and fall. It's what we deserve at this point, and there is little that is going to change that.

American can take control of both parties by going in masses to the primaries and selecting one of their own and voting anyone who is funded by corporations. it is that simple show up and make sure u get one of your own not the one the media tell u to vote for. Nader could have won if enough people voted him in

The dynamics of the corrupted constitutional foundation needs to be changed. If a wooden house is built on a wooden foundation has been overrun with termite infestation from top to bottom, what should the people owners of the house do?

1) Terminate the termite infestation colonies and nests.
2) Shore up the foundation with reinforced bulwark supports (constitutional amendments).
3) If the foundation is infested and damaged beyond repair, then the house would have to be abandoned to the termites and the people owners move on, or the damaged house would have to be torn down and rebuilt from foundation up.

The Frankenstein multinational corporations are the termites. They have let their termite armies of lobbyists on KStreet overrun the upperhouse and lowerhouse of the people's house. The legislative superstructure (the body of existing legislations on the books) and infrastructure (the legislative House+Senate rules, precedents and customs) are near totally eaten through. The SupremeCourt (the reinforcing bulwark for the foundation and infrastructure) is currently considering legal coup d'etat to overturn legal precedents, in order to allow corporations full unlimited rights to finance Congressional elections.

The people should ask how and whether this termite infested wooden house can or should be saved.

You are 100% correct. We have become a nation. like certain "emperors of clothing optional", unlike them, we have no one to state such things to the citizens. Dumbed down, uniformed and coddled ot the point polling by network news indicated "citizens do not want to hear bad news during their dinner time" we blog, rather then confront, we communicate, but say little. We object, but on in our selfish interests. 1/3 drop out of HS, "Grads" cannot function, 60% drop out of college and few take world class competitive degrees. We put more into football then education. Yes the USA is in decline, I guess it is a blessing most to dumb to know so?

Jon Stewart has a platform to spew from, you have your vote and somehow you squander it, make excuses, or don't hold your reps feet to the fire. It's easy to admire Jon Stewart he is accountable to no one except sponsors and his station, yet your Representatives decisions impact your everyday lives and you complain here instead of placing the pressure where it belongs. Don't get me wrong I like Jon Stewart myself, but when I read "I'll take Jon Stewart instead of polticians" it makes me sad for America.

It also doesn't help that our representatives will promise you the world while running for office.

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:49 PM on 10/03/2009

They have to promise the world, otherwise they won't get elected. The millions of drones/party label slaves keep voting for these corporate shills, that's the problem---in these robots' minds, records/actions don't matter, only the rhetoric.

Actually, government doesn't have that much of an impact on our daily lives. And you are fooling yourself if you think the vast majority of the complacent American electorate is all of a sudden going to become upright citizens that actually harness their voting power instead of squandering it.

Jon Stewart didn't do a good job here. He should have pointed out the blue dog democrats instead of all democrats. The blue dogs have always been the problem. Baucus, Lincoln, Conrad, Carper, Nelson are all Blue dog democrats. It's the blue dogs who stand in the way of a public option and not the regular democrats.

Yes, but by klicking the Dems as whole he'll have a better chance of prompting the other Dems to do something about their Blue Dogs. I thought Stewarts piece was brilliant, and as an outsider looking in I've found it (Dems failing to capitalise) to be bizarre American politics.
Watching Obama flounder has been tremendously disappointing for those of us outside the US who were hoping you'd turned the corner on the Bush years. As the Republican's already know, the Dems will be demolished in the mid term elections. And then Obama really will be a lame duck President.
Very sad.

The problem the Dems have, despite super majorities in both houses and the presidency, is total and utter lack of vision. NO principles...as evidenced by the way they spin circles around them.
