Pardon me for noticing but some people just need to find something to complain about to really feel alive...
I believe that you've been thrown off by the word "complain". More than likely the women in question were "complaining" to their doctors or these researchers after being queried about the quality of their sleep.
And by your tone, I doubt you've ever suffered from chronic insomnia. It is debilitating.
The converse of this is that men sleep more poorly than women.
Maybe it's that guilty conscience they carry around, for the way they treat women.
This is interesting. Gender differences in sleep architecture are well known including the observation that women on the whole preserve deep sleep also known as slow wave sleep or stage 3 sleep much more effectively as they age in comparison to men who lose slow wave sleep as they age. Despite this women report more insomnia symptoms in every age category when compared to men. Additionally slow wave sleep is that part of sleep which is naturally thought to be rejuvenative and restorative and is promoted by vigorous exercise when exercise is completed within 5 hours of desired bedtime. Even so women describe their sleep as more troubled than men. That there could be measurable differences in total sleep time is interesting but the BBC synopsis seems to suggest a lot of the data maybe confounded by other factors including patterns of sleep aid use and alcohol intake both of which will alter sleep quality and can change sleep architecture
