LONDON — Most babies born in rich countries this century will eventually make it to their 100th birthday, new research says. Danish experts say that since the 20th century, people in developed countries are living about three decades longer than in the past. Surprisingly, the trend shows little sign of slowing down.

In an article published Friday in the medical journal Lancet, the researchers write that the process of aging may be "modifiable."

James Vaupel of the Max Planck Institute in Germany and colleagues in Denmark examined studies published globally in 2004-2005 on numerous issues related to aging. They found life expectancy is increasing steadily in most countries, even beyond the limits of what scientists first thought possible. In Japan, for instance, which has the world's longest life expectancy, more than half of the country's 80-year-old women are expected to live to 90.

"Improvements in health care are leading to ever slowing rates of aging, challenging the idea that there is a fixed ceiling to human longevity," said David Gems, an aging expert at University College London. Gems was not connected to the research, and is studying drugs that can lengthen the life span of mice, which may one day have applications for people.

"Laboratory studies of mice, including our own, demonstrate that if you slow aging even just a little, it has a strong protective effect," he said. "A pill that slowed aging could provide protection against the whole gamut of aging-related diseases."

While illnesses affecting the elderly like heart disease, cancer and diabetes are rising, advances in medical treatment are also making it possible for them to remain active for longer. The obesity epidemic, however, may complicate matters. Extra weight makes people more susceptible to diseases and may increase their risk of dying.

In the U.S., data from 1982 to 2000 showed a major drop in illness and disability among the elderly, though that has now begun to reverse, probably linked to the rise in obesity.

The graying population will slowly radically transform society, and retirement ages may soon be pushed back, said Richard Suzman, an aging expert at the U.S. National Institute on Aging.

"We are within five to 10 years of a watershed event where there will be more people on earth over 65 than there under five," he said. "Those extra years need to be financed somehow and we need to start thinking about it now."

You mean in all those other countries that provide health care, right?
Unless meaningful health care reform passes here in the U.S. I predict my grandkids won't make it that far.

I'm ready of course to live beyond 100. If only a pill is what we need to live longer, why should just children of this century live beyond what we are all able to reach? Personally I think we live forever in other ways. We never really die, the body does, but we are here forever. Metaphysically of course. I believe love is the way to make life worth living beyond any hope of just this lifetime. Once you find true love, I believe you found the secret of forever.

This article is making enormous assumptions yet leaving out actual statistics for the most part. Our children are now exposed to more pesticides and toxic fertilizers (sewerage sludge a.k.a. biosolids) than in the past, injected with far more poisonous vaccines as in the past and have far more diseases as a result. There aren't too many autistic people in their 20's and 30's but when this new wave of kids that have been poisoned from these vaccines hit adulthood we'll all be feeling the pinch. Without someone to take care of them they'll surely die young even before the serious immune problems from vaccination hit them. We're also forgetting the obesity our kids are dealing with nowadays. In some areas over half of kids are obese, which is insane! So compared to the past our kids are chock full of vaccine poisons, and all the poisons that go into our food in this country from factory farming. Our kids will without a doubt be the sickest in our history.

The article stipulates conditions in Europe, where healthcare is available to all. What are the chances of good healthcare ever being available to Americans?

In general, Europeans live a healthier life-style than we do - speaking anecdotally, not scientifically.

Great. And the 1 in 100 kids with autism? Group homes for nonagenarians? Institutions for 100 year olds? That's the latest (and likely the low) number sent out today by Sebelius late afternoon into the media abyss. 1 in 100 kids with autism. Startling and tragic. And there's no outcry or demand for answers. We'll just keep looking for the elusive genes, right? Maybe someday we can abort them all before birth. Goody gumdrops.

Yet we can track down the spinach leaf that poisons three people in East Alamo. Wow.

Kim, I agree with you on the autism epidemic.

And in a far less reverent note, did three people in East Alamo actually eat spinach? Maybe they did by mistake.

My mother at 88 and without the 20 meds she is on today would not be alive. She has close to zero quality of life. What is the likelihood this is about health, and not about increasing meds.

Well with rampant childhood obesity I don't know how accurate these figures will be.
