"Recession has finally hit education". Where have you been Business Week? This has been going on for some time now. Try visiting some schools before you write such a _dumb article.

To make matters far worse, consider what the US government has actually done to fix the underlying problems? Nothing

good articles; http://iamned.blogspot.com

The government has put the same punch bowl out that got us into the mess in the first place. More debt and consumption and don't worry about paying it back. (Berbnanke= Greenspan II)

So, how we are suppose to compete with China and India?
I couldn't tell you for every profession but in the software older engineers have much better general understanding of the field than engineers minted after Internet boom started. Is is because of bad education or may be unfit individuals entered the field in 90s but it is what it is

"Compete with China and India" . . . how about Europe?

In the not so distant future we will be buying high speed bullet trains and technology from China and highly efficient solar panel systems from Germany . . . providing we can correct the devastation Eight Years of Republican "control" did to our economy, and the dollar rises enough allowing us to "import" . . . .

Why is BO against the vouchers?

Mr Diddly believed everyone should pay retails for his albums and up until his death did NOT support any "voucher" use in record shops due to royalty issues . .

hope that clears it up for you . . . . .

Stack 'em deep and teach 'em cheap....the GOP motto.

BO is stopping the education vouchers. Wake up.

Vouchers are not the answer.

This is another of "their" goals. A less educated public is perfect for them. They'll shrink education along with everything else. Welcome to serfdom.

Teach For America has filled a lot of those spots. Even with people who only have an Associates Degree.

this is not news, anybody keeping up with the world and not living under a rock would have seen this coming.

American education sucks anyway, 25% of college graduates have to go further into training because we are so far behind from the rest of the world. It's all about outsourcing these days, a little kid in china teamed up with one from India could probably replace your job.

Due to massive city budget cuts many teachers were layed off or furloughed.

What are they teaching? Studies show the students don't know where China is located or who the Vice President is??

A better headline would be that Education is doing better than the rest of the economy or other jobs. Teacher job loses are non existent over all. Most of the teaching job loses in California were negated by recent hirings in other states. Most of the job loses came from technical schools which had a decrease in enrollment due to the recession and higher education.
Other industries are taking a bigger hit. Finance has 25% unemployment rate, construction has a 50% unemployment rate, retail 19%. Teachers have less than a 1% unemployment rate. They have been the only safe jobs in this recession. They are doing well.

"Today's employment report shows that the recession has finally hit education".

Great...keep the working classes fighting for crumbs and their women folk
barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen.
