I am SO glad we didn't get the Olympics in the USA....
We have so many other (way more) important things to think about, work on and spend a whole bunch
of money on, besides the Olympics. I'm not saying I don't like them, (I do watch many of the competitions for both winter and summer), but getting the Olympics should not have been a priority this time around.

YAY for Rio!

Brazilians personify human dignity. You can't find any inscription derogating other competing countries or cities or even their heads of state, who made the bids. Imagine if America (Chicago) had won it? Americans (well the ones who see themselves as patriotic) would have flooded their streets derogating their competitions--nations, cities, heads of state. If the patriotic Americans have the potential to do that, imagine how worse the unpatriotic ones (like the ones who were cheering when their country lost the bid) could behave?

The unpredictable heartlessness of the US--from wars to political instabilities and feuds to communal violence (like Third World countries) were the reasons the IOC dissed the US. They did not put the Obamas down, they put America down because they don't want Olympic athletes to be hurt by teabaggers, birthers, and other angry Americans. Even the REALLY violent G-20 protests did not help the cause.

America needs to look inwards and put itself in order. The nation is appearing as the United States of Barbarians---sorry to say.

Read your comment. They did not put the Obamas down, they put America down because they don't want Olympic athletes to be hurt by teabaggers, birthers, and other angry Americans.

The teabaggers and the birthers what harm have they caused?
..................What about your truthers???

Even the REALLY violent G-20 protests did not help the cause.
..................And those protesting the G-20.
..................Spoiled rich brats from a liberal elitist upbringing.

By your own words you personify the hate that fills the void. Truly Comical.

Well, for Rio, Brazil and South America, pride in country, region and city prevails. Imagine if the committee had selected Chicago! The fallout would have been immediate and the IOC criticized if not condemned for caving-in to presidential power politics. The president made a bad call: His presence was seen as an attempt to pressure the committee in Chicago's favor. He should have stayed home, content to have the city's loyalists - Michelle, Jarret, Oprah and Daley - velvet hammer Chicago's hopes.
The committee made the only choice it could in order to save face and appear fair-minded. The only comfort to be taken from this lesson in extra-presidential multi-tasking is that Chicago will be spared the onerous debt Olympic venues incur as result of selection. Three years ago, Montreal paid off the last installment on its Olympic construction for games held in 1976!

Congratulations to Brazil! I bet you don't have a certain portion of the population who is upset about this for purely political reasons.

If you want to improve the image, it'd be best not to send them to Brazil. They'll just manage to misrepresent us badly.

What a horrible suggestion! The middle of the Atlantic Ocean would be much better!

Interesting decision but given the history of past US Olympics hosting, it is not surprising. But I note that one criticism gleefully offered by Obama haters is the specter of street violence in Chicago. This is of interest to me because I’ve traveled around the US many times in the past 50 years, have been in just about every major city and have never been physically assaulted. Yet in our one trip to Rio about 20 years ago, my wife and I were on a public bus where two men got into a slapping contest that ended when one pulled out a hand gun, fired a shot into the roof, and then aimed the gun at us before jumping off.
Also, we were on a tour bus and at the end, while filing off, I handed the driver a partial tip and while I fished the remainder from my pocket he threw my first offering on the floor and cursed me out. I realize that at that time Brazil was in dire financial straits with wildly fluctuating daily exchange rates but the gratuity I was offering him was well beyond what should have been expected given the circumstances.
Needless to say, we never went back.
From what we saw it was a beautiful country but does have some dark recesses. Their slums are huge and especially odious. Corruption is rampant and there is considerable overt racial tension.
