SNL Mocks Whoopi Goldberg For Uninformed Roman Polanski Defense (VIDEO)

Huffington Post   First Posted: 12/1/09 Updated: 5/25/11

Whoopi

Despite overwhelming evidence that Roman Polanski drugged, raped, and sodomized a 13-year-old girl, most of Hollywood has felt the need to rush to his defense. This criminal has been in the wind, defying punishment for decades, yet unlike most felons that flee, Polanski enjoys the status of "creative genius" which affords him powerful protectors. His most notable defender this week has been "View" veteran Whoopi Goldberg who said Polanski didn't "rape-rape" his victim.

"SNL" seized upon this instance to mock Goldberg, portraying her as uninformed and distracted:

"Look, Seth Meyers, unlike you we have an early morning show. Basically I just roll out of bed and start talking. Sometimes I don't even wake up until 45 minutes into the show, unsure of what I said to whom or what or where or even who got me to where I am or how."

This is one of the reasons why they shouldn't have let Star Jones go. As controversial as she was, at least she would have been able to re-educate comedian co-hosts like Whoopi about the American criminal justice system, specifically about the legal definition of statutory rape!

THANK YOU--at least Star Jones had availed herself of an education, something noone else on the show has--a graduate degree, if any at all...

I love Fred Armisen's Joy Behar. I also should add if you didn't watch the entire discussion on the View where Whoopi made these remarks, you don't have the proper context to judge them in

Get well soon, Michael Moore! You know, my fellow Michael Moore fans, we should be out supporting this important film. As our fearless leader lies in a hospital bed http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygas_MdfnYE we need to show him love by seeing "Capitalism: A Love Story" over and over. I challenge us all to pay the way of at least one friend to see the film. Then all the haters in the trades won't be able to write negative stories about Michael and this film, such as this one here:
[B]ut the biggest disappointment of the weekend is Michael Moore's Capitalism: A Love Story (Overture). After a $57K per theatre average on 4 screens last weekend, the picture broke to a wider 962 locations with terrible results. The "documentary" only sold an estimated $1.3M in tickets to start the weekend, and it will finish at about $3.9M for a PTA of less than $4,000.

Being a celebrity doesn't make you smart.-, but it does get attention.

Obviously not.

I always thought that she was a women's rights person. Apparently, not young girls. It all is a matter of timing.

I tried to make this same point about Whoopie in a previous blg and HuffP0 refused to post it. Now that SNL has done it, it's OK.
06:18 PM on 10/05/2009
Goldberg needs to issue an apology.
02:13 PM on 10/05/2009
Yeah, Whoopie, who in the world is anyone to question the propriety of a 40 something year old man who drugs, gives alcohol to a 13 year old and then sodomizes and ra---------pes her.

I mean, wow, what is so wrong with that, right, Whoopie.

SNL - Hire some (a) black women. I'm tired of them sticking black men in drag. I find it very offensive.

That's what happens when you get your news from SNL skits. Whoopi wasn't excusing anything and certainly not because he was a artist. She was clarifying what the actual charges were. Something few people bother to do.

And I really hate it when men play famous women. I doubt they would do it in reverse.

He was convicted which makes him a fugitive felon.

You mean the charges he plead guilty to?
12:00 AM on 10/04/2009
whoopi isn't a lesbian she's bisexual.

she is definitely wrong on this issue.

she comes across very intelligent at times, than other times like a dimwit.
11:38 PM on 10/03/2009
Like Whoopi, but I sure didn't understand her position on this. She's just plain wrong.
09:47 AM on 10/04/2009

I like her too. I also like Natalie Portman and Martin Scorsese, yet they are also supporting Polanski. I'm one to say not to judge people on their personal lives. They are entertainers, and the only thing I tend to care about is the quality of their work. In this case, however... These seem like some serious character flaws. Supporting a man who would drug a 13 year old girl, and have sex with her against her will - aka as rape - is mind boggling. There is nothing that can make me see it from their point of view.

whoopi goldberg is annoying. and she's a lesbian (not that there's anything wrong with that) whether she admits it or not.

fyi - the reason i bring it up is because her hiding it is a proper portrayal of how phony and spineless she is.
11:45 PM on 10/03/2009
Since when is it any of your business??? She is actually in a long-term relationship with a man, so you can pretend to like her again. Sheesh.

You trying living as a non-heterosexual orientation in a world surrounded by straight people who don't understand anything LGBT and for the most part don't want to, then comment back.

At last Goldberg is being held accountable, even if it is by Sat.Live, for her moronic statement that R.Polanski's admitted sexual assault of a drugged minor wasn't "rape/rape". Personally, my mouth fell open when I listened to the segment on TheView. Then i got angry. I am always surprised when women, informed, intelligent, wordly women like Goldberg can say (& believe such things). I expect it from women like Ann Coulter, it is a huge disappointment when a woman I thought was an activist for human & civil rights does it.

Um, I am trying to say this without defending Whoopi or Roman Polanski, but I understood exactly what she meant. She was speaking of violent rape. What Roman Polanski did was ply the young girl with drugs and alcohol and make her more pliable by artificial means rather than use physical force against her. It doesn't make what he did any less disgusting IMHO. I am also not impressed by the fact he has paid the young woman for her "trouble" after she sued him. He needs to come back to America and stand before a judge.
11:42 PM on 10/03/2009
It's very violent to physically immobilize a child, so you can rape them with less resistance.
10:11 AM on 10/04/2009
Yep, just like Catholic Priests didn't commit "rape rape" because there was no violence and it was Altar Wine in Church...uh uh...I buy that all the way...

But I do agree that he has to return to the US and face justice.
