Only in Vegas would they... auction off dinosaur bones? This mammoth auction taking place on October 3rd at the Venetian is predicted to gross about $6 million. Up for auction are a T-rex, a woolly mammoth, and about 50 other fossils. You can take a look at what's for sale here in our slideshow. Be sure to vote for your favorites.

This is huge: the Venetian Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas is auctioning off dinosaur bones. The centerpiece is the 66 million year old Samson.

Samson is a female, so shouldn't she be named Delilah?

Let's "privatize" everything!!!!

- Hire out the Congressional duties to private corporations (oh, wait, we did that with lobbyists).

- Hire out our military defense to private corporations (nope. Already did that, too, with Blackwater/Xe).

- Hire out our jails, public water works, mental health care, veterans' care, and family services to private concerns (well, depending on the state, they've all been done, too).

And now we can privatize our history and our heritage. After all of the efforts to preserve something for all Americans, the next nail in the coffin likely will be the selling of our National Parks.

This is crazy. We know there were never any dinosaurs....where are they mentioned in the bible? Caveat Emptor!

so if I go catch some animals on the Federal Endangered Species List, I can auction those off then? I'm kind of confused as to how this is even legal

Huffpo this is outrageous!

I thought it was common knowledge that this type of behaviour was unethical and in some places illegal!
(I cant believe this is legal in the US! Seriously?!).

Fossils should be in the public domain, available to scientists and students. This is our collective history, something for all of us to share. It is NOT something that should be sold to the highest bidder so that he can use it as a centrepiece for his dining room table.

Please dont promote such atrocious activities, this is vile.

This is not an acceptable headline, Huffington Post. This type of practice should be vilified not promoted. Fossils belong to society to be kept in perpetuity, protected, and studied. They do not belong in someone's home. Also, please update your keywords. This is paleontology not archeology.
05:06 PM on 10/03/2009
I'd even go so far as to say palaeontology not archaeology

Way to slap science in the face with Capitalism. This is a joke, absolute joke. These should be in Universities to be used for comparison analysis or something of the sort, not in some dip$hit collectors house.

What's stopping universities from purchasing them?

Universities generally do not have the funds to purchase this. They tend to operate on donations, save for the University of Chicago, but then again they receive most of their fossils through sponsored digs and donations. The point is no one should be making money off of this. It's nonsense.

Super cool, but you neglected to put the word STUNNED in your headline. Thanks for the photos.

Sorry, I saw 'Night At The Museum'. I wouldn't want these bones to come alive at night and wreak havoc in my neighborhood.
