In a long interview about his company's relationship with newspapers and the print journalism industry, Schmidt made it clear he wants established players to survive. In fact, he thinks Google has a "moral responsibility" to help. But help doesn't mean a handout.

If newspapers printed the stories that people wanted to know about, instead of being censored by editors and advertisers, they would still be in business. Bye Bye Rupert, enjoy extinction. You make a mockery of journalism when you had the chance. Good riddens.

Schmidt has said these same things before. I's really like for Google to help in finding solutions, by building platforms.

Mr. Schmidt, we need journalists.

Journalists that research, journalists that investigate,
journalists that ask questions, journalists who are
not afraid and realize the material comes before
anything within their life-including their own life.

What we do not need are the 'copy and paste'
type that are so prevalent across all media.

What we do not need are the forms of media that
are operating under the business as usual plans
that have put entities such as newspapers in peril.

If a newspaper can employ the personnel that can
produce the content that the public is looking for,
that newspaper shall survive and thrive-just as
newspapers held together through the age of radio
as well as the age of television.

I agree with what you say, but the reality is many newspapers just simply get their stuff from AP and run it rather than do it themselves. It's not just the Internet news that is hurting the newspaper industry, it's also cable news.

The newspaper model is an anachronism in this digital age, just like typewriters. They need to reinvent themselves, and haven't moved that quickly. We can't blame Google, Yahoo or anyone else. The blame lies with the newspaper industry, which has not adapted.
