NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP)- A mother whose newborn was kidnapped by a knife-wielding woman posing as an immigration agent was briefly reunited with her baby Saturday, then saw him and her three other children taken from her and put into state custody.

Rob Johnson, a spokesman for the Tennessee Department of Children's Services, said the children were taken from their mother, Maria Gurrolla, "purely for safety reasons," though he would not detail why the state deemed they were in danger.

"Our focus is on the children, and under the current situation right now, we think the safest thing to do is take the children into state custody," he said.

Gurrolla, 30, was stabbed in her home Tuesday, just four days after giving birth to Yair Anthony Carillo, who was snatched by the attacker.

Nashville police said the baby was found in good health Friday night at a home in Ardmore, Ala., about 80 miles south of Nashville near the Tennessee line.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Director Mark Gwyn said officials arrested Tammy Renee Silas, 39, at the home in Ardmore. Federal authorities formally charged her Saturday with kidnapping.

Silas' live-in boyfriend, Martin Rodriguez, said he was shocked by the arrest and didn't think she was capable of the crime.

Speaking through an interpreter, he said Silas told him she was adopting a baby from a cousin who had to go to jail, and was going to El Paso, Texas, to get the child. He said he picked Silas up from the Huntsville airport Tuesday and she had a newborn with her.

"She was acting normal around the baby and I didn't really see any difference, but I think she was happy," Rodriguez said from their one-story home, where a box of baby clothes for a boy overflowed in the dining room. "What woman isn't happy to carry a baby?"

Rodriguez said he met Silas, a contractor, when they both lived in Nashville. He said Silas is bilingual and was born in Tarrant County, Texas, where she had family. "The last thing that she said to me was, 'I am so sorry and I love you,'" Rodriguez said.

Earlier Saturday, officials said the newborn would stay with a foster family as authorities arranged for Gurrolla to be reunited with her son.

"This baby is a week old, and this child has spent half his life away from his family. I think it's time we reunite them," said My Harrison, a special agent with the FBI in Tennessee.

Johnson said officials made arrangements for Gurrolla to see her baby Saturday afternoon and hold him, and she brought her three other children -- ages 3, 9 and 11 -- with her. All four children were then taken into custody. Johnson, who said he could not discuss details of the situation for privacy reasons, said a judge would review the case next week to determine when the children can go home.

Joel Siskovic, an FBI special agent in the Memphis division, said he could not say why the children were put into state custody. "As of now, there's no indication that there's an ongoing threat to the family," he said.

Authorities said they had no word on a possible motive in the kidnapping. Police in Nashville did not know if Silas has a lawyer. The Morgan County Sheriff's office said Silas was picked up by U.S. Marshals on Saturday morning, though it was not known where she was being taken.

The infant's mother told police a heavyset white woman with blonde hair arrived at her home posing as an immigration agent and attacked her with a knife.

Gurrolla told investigators that at one point she heard the woman make a phone call and tell someone in Spanish words to the effect of "the job is done" and that the mother "was dying," said Siskovic, the FBI agent.

Siskovic said Silas took the victim's cell phone, which helped investigators locate Silas.

He would not comment further on the possibility that Silas was not working alone.

At a Wednesday news conference, Gurrolla told reporters she had never seen her attacker before.

Officials believe Silas followed Gurrolla and her baby from a local office of the Women, Infants and Children program and to a Walmart store. "I think it's clear that she was targeting people at that location," Siskovic said.

Investigators got a break when they found that a video camera in the Walmart parking lot had captured the license plate of the car seen following the mother and baby, according to the arrest warrant.

Cathy Nahirny, a senior analyst for infant abduction cases at the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, said there have been at least two other recent cases where an abductor used a ploy similar to the one used in this case.

"We need to get the word out to our immigrant communities," Nahirny said. "Anybody that claims they are from federal law enforcement agencies, you have the right and you should ask for photo identification."

Abductions of infants by strangers are rare, with nine reported cases so far this year and five last year, according to the missing child center.

Nahirny said immigrant families have been targets of child abductions because of the assumption they will not tell police.

Gurrolla is Latina but her immigration status isn't clear. She was released from the hospital Thursday.

The lesson here is that it's okay when the state steals your baby, but not some desperate crazy person. Totally different things, obviously.

Horror story followed by a second horror story when her children are taken from her. What a mess.

What the hell are the facts of this story? I am sickened by the tabloidesque posting of this story without the actual facts to accompany it.

WHY were the children taken? WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?

"Federal authorities formally charged her Saturday with kidnapping".

What about assault? The story claims the woman kidnapper stabbed the mother after posing as an immigration authority. Why was she only charged with kidnapping?

As a society, we need to ask if due process is served when children can be removed from the home without charges being filed. This story says authorities give no reason for the children's removal, and one authority states the family is no longer in danger. So, the question is, why have the children, especially this infant, been removed from their mother? Shouldn't the state have to give a REASON? If the state isn't required to give a reason, then this family shouldn't have to wait more than 24 hrs to go before a judge. A week is too long, especially considering that this infant (now a week old) may never be able to bond with its Mother at this point. The danger to the children must be severe to justify the psychological damage inflicted when children are removed from the home. The State has a lot of explaining to do.

This smacks of an anti-illegal immigrant issue. Since the mother's status was unclear, they probably took the children while they check into deporting her. Tell me again how this is a Christian nation

How can any of us make a comment (except that the kidnapping was a horror story) without knowing all the facts about why the kids were removed?

With all the publicity surrounding this case, I'm pretty sure CPS had a very good reason for taking this woman's kids away.

I have to agree with you MsGray. My sister is a district prosecutor here in Texas, and I can state FOR CERTAIN that every detail of a story isn't always released to the press. These same people commenting here on how horrible CPS is to take this child from their parent would be here commenting that CPS didn't do enough to protect the child(ren) if there had been a bad outcome. It's a no win for CPS, or just about anyone in Social Services. These people have a tough job, work longer hours than a resident in training, and get horrible pay: I work in graduate medical education and get paid almost twice the salary a Social Worker in Texas makes, and who's had twice the post graduate education I have. Sad.

Child Protection Services in every state are dependent on federal funds that require them to apprehend children; you can thank the Clintons for that.

We don't know all the facts. People just assume that illegal immigrants can't be bad parents when people from all walks of life actually can be.

These agencies are given too much power to remove kids from a house. They remove, then investigate.. Even if the parents are completely innocent, they will not get their kids back for at least 30 days. Worst part about this is the investigations are most often done by young, childless college grads that are clueless. I know of a case that a 12 year old with ADHD complained to a counselor at school that she was smacked in the head by the mother. In the same sentence she said it never happened before. This started an investigation into the backgrounds of both parents. Contacting friends and school employees. All the siblings were pulled out of class for an interview before the parents were even notified. This was simply an emotional preteen venting because she did not get her way. And any parent with kids would have figured this out in 10 min. This 50 year old upper middle class couple who already raised 3 kids were being lectured on how to parent by a 25 year old with no kids- and you wonder why CPS is stretched. Oddest thing is she said that you can never touch a child's head but you can hit them with a belt over clothes as long as it didn't leave marks. Do i ever have it backwards (100% true). The older kids will remember this and be marked forever. Just wrong

I understand the example that you are giving. I had a friend who's husband's ex-fiance called CPS on them and said they beat their child. The child was removed from the home pending an investigation. The child was given to next of kin and returned to the home within 30 days. There are also some situation where CPS did nothing and the children ended up dead. The have to take every call seriously because if they don't they may end up with a Nixmary Brown situation.

If the infant is not allowed to bond to his mother, and passed around like an abandoned puppy, in about 16 years we'll have a kid with no conscience. And then the anti-immigration people will say...see, these people just don't respect life.

Yet ANOTHER reason why NO ONE can trust the "AUTHORITIES"!

Last year...in my neighborhood..a homeless-guy sort of took up residence in a green-belt behind our block...its happened before...this green-belt's 3/4 of a mile long...a Foot-Path from end to end...so..the "Cardboard Patio" thing..few Flattened Box's.

But..neighbors noticed THIS guy..hauling stuff down into the green-belt...Couple Auto Bench Seats....Then Mr. Homeless.."Pushed It" constructing a PLASTIC ENCLOSURE about 10'X10'...quickly Christened.."The Plastic Palace"....Mr. Homeless..decided the time was right for a CAMP FIRE..and that was it...

The Neighborhood Complained To The 'City'! WHOOPS! WON'T DO THAT AGAIN!!!...

THEIR "RESPONSE"?? COPS!...and a BULLDOZER.!..The COPS Arrested the guy...we had asked them NOT to do that...for "VAGRANCY"...off he went...HOWEVER This did NOT STOP THEM from taking the opportunity to TO SEARCH....EVERY BACKYARD ALONG THE GREEN-BELT..they issued FINES..they CONFISCATED items..

The BULLDOZER..CUT a Defacto "ROAD" into the Belt.....PUSHED all the Junk into a PILE...In the Process...making a SMALL NATURAL.."Wide Spot" ..into a 50' X 50'..Clearcut...a MUD HOLE in Winter..in SUMMER a 'PARTY SPOT'...a HUGE problem!

PUNCHLINE: THE 'CITIES'.."RESPONSE" to TAX PAYING Property Owners...was..basically.."PUNITIVE".....and CONTINUES to be!..They've decided TO "CLEAN IT UP"..but..NOT BEFORE...trying to...."BILL THE RESIDENTS"..FOR THE "CLEAN-UP"...and too..WHAT WILL HAPPEN THIS TIME?

we don't know all the facts yet...
perhaps the kidnapper took the baby (which is not the proper action at all)
because she some things we do not and felt the baby was in danger...
i am sure more info will come to light and we can make judgments then.
