NEW YORK — Conde Nast Publications is closing Gourmet, the nation's oldest food magazine, and three other money-losing titles as the high-end publisher tries to weather a devastating advertising slump.

In addition to Gourmet, which had a circulation of 980,000 last year, the publisher is closing Modern Bride, Elegant Bride and Cookie, a parenting magazine. Earlier in the year it killed publication of Portfolio, a business magazine, and Domino, a lifestyle title.

"We're all stunned, sad," Gourmet's editor, Ruth Reichl, wrote in a post on Twitter.

In a staff memo, Conde Nast CEO Charles Townsend said the closures were required "to navigate the company through the economic downturn and to position us to take advantage of coming opportunities."

Consultants from McKinsey & Co. have been helping the publisher, known for elegant publications and high costs, identify ways to cut its expenses. Despite Gourmet's large audience, the magazine has suffered one of the worst ad declines of any popular title. Its number of ad pages was down 50 percent in the second quarter from the year before, according to the Publishers Information Bureau.

Conde Nast, run by billionaire S.I. Newhouse Jr., publishes such magazines as Vogue, The New Yorker and Wired and is a unit of privately held Advance Publications Inc. The company's remaining 19 magazines also include one on food, Bon Appetit, which has a larger circulation than Gourmet, at 1.4 million. Bon Appetit's decline in ad pages in the second quarter was only slightly less steep, at 40 percent.

Conde Nast spokeswoman Maurie Perl said the roughly 180 employees of Gourmet, Cookie, Modern Bride and Elegant Bride will be leaving the company with severance packages by the end of the week.

Perl said Conde Nast doesn't plan to close more magazines, though three or four might have to cut the number of issues they put out. She also said more layoffs are possible. The company has given publishers and editors a roughly two-week deadline to meet new budget targets. Any staff cuts should be made by the end of the year, she said.

Perl said it is still uncertain whether Reichl will stay with the company, but the editors of the other three shuttered publications will be leaving.

Gourmet, revered by many culinary aficionados, was launched in 1941 by Earle R. MacAusland as "the magazine of good living." It was known for more than just recipes: It dived into extended discourse about travel, wine and food, such as the 2004 piece in which David Foster Wallace argued against the practice of boiling lobsters to death.

Now, Conde Nast said, Gourmet's brand will live on in books and TV programming. It also plans to keep publishing Gourmet recipes on Epicurious.com.

Magazine consultant Martin Walker said closing Gourmet makes financial sense because Bon Appetit should be able to pick up many of the magazine's subscribers and advertisers. Many advertisers were trending toward food titles with a more affordable sensibility anyway, he said, and it would have been hard to pull off the reverse, and expect Bon Appetit advertisers to switch to the more upscale Gourmet.

As Modern Bride and Elegant Bride close, a third Conde Nast magazine, Brides, will increase its frequency to monthly instead of coming out every two months.

I spoke with Kathie Dressel, Chuck Townsend’s pleasant assistant, about my great disappointment that publication of the iconic Gourmet magazine is being shut down. I asked if the decision might be reversed.

Kathie said she has spoken with many people and is forwarding all emails to Townsend. She said Chuck Townsend is responding himself to the emails.

She provided her email address: Kathie_dressel@condenast.com

Well, it's a shame to see Gourmet go. But Cookie? A magazine aimed at wealthy stay-at-home's who have nothing but money and time on their hands...I for one, won't miss it being on the newsstand.

Still not over it. Former Cookie intern and always a Gourmet fan. Internet is great, but bring back print. Can't they live together?

I'm no longer buying Bon Appetit. S c r e w Conde Nast and their "broader appeal" (aka lowest common denominator). When is American going to wake up and realize that complexity and difficult concepts are not "elistist"? This goes for food, politics, science, literature... He11, any kind of thinking. I'm not sad so much for Gourmet as I am for what it represents.

And to all of the "so what, it's only food" folks: Think about it. After sex, feeding someone is one of the most intimate things you can do with another human. It's conversation and companionship, occasionally hard work, and often artistic. We're growing too fond of fast, easy, and familiar.

It's sad but not surprising how so many people on this board assume that everyone has access to the Web. Well, millions around the world still don't either for technical or economic reasons. I'm not referring, of course to readers of upscale Gourmet, but I am pointing to those who don't care if all publishing goes Web only. Well we should care. The idea of still being able to get "all the news that's fit to print" for a dollar or less per day is still a worthy and valuable concept for Democracy. Such a "luxury" should not be reserved just for those who can afford a computer or cellphone data plan.

Print is over -- on its way out! You have to get over it!

We are in the middle of a revolution. The scribes and churches fought like hell to stop the printing presses from revving up during the first media revolution. The changes went ahead anyway despite wide-spread illiteracy.

Let's face it the farmers in the drylands of Afghanistan or the mountains of South America don't linger over coffee and their local newspaper before heading out into the fields.

Imagine the trees that will now be saved; the pollution from pulp mills that will now be prevented; the gas guzzled by delivery vans that will no longer be needed. It is a win/win revolution for us all.

Many of us love the turn of the printed page, beautiful books and glossy magazines filled with wondrous photography, but we didn't stop to think that population should be controlled. Now our massive global population dictates that any progress that contributes to less pollution must go ahead -- it is no longer a choice.

Do you really believe printed material is a major cause of pollution?

Also, consider the fact that every time a magazine folds, hundreds if not thousands of people are out of work. I guess those folks can go work with the farmers in Afghanistan.

Well, let's keep all of this online. Frankly, who has time to read magazines anymore? Just print enough for the doctors' and dentists' waiting rooms.

All this hand-wringing about printed materials is so bizarre. It's called progress, technology, And by the way, it SAVES TREES!!!

Magazines are an incredibly wasteful way to channel info. All those glossy, thick pages. All the trucking around, delivering via plane, ferry, car, etc.

Please.

Who has time to read the internet? Not me..even though that's what I'm doing now. I've never bought Gourmet or Bon Appetit or much of anything else because of my financial shape. But if I could I'd rather have hard copy on the shelf & at my fingertips. trying to find things on the web through a snakenest of links is a time-consuming pain in the neck. That said I really like epicurious.com ... very addicting with great recipes & not at all hoity-toity. I may have snagged a good Thanksgiving dessert there. The problem is I don't have the time to explore what's on the site & not all that much time & energy to try all the recipes. God knows I have a big enough stack of photocopied recipes waiting to be used. We did get around to making schnitzel over the weekend with a simple topping of apples cooked in butter with nutmeg.

I still read magazines. And books. And the printed newspaper. And I have plenty of time to read them while I am riding the bus and train to/from work. And judging from the number of people who are on the bus and train with me reading their magazines, books and newspapers I seem to be in good company.

Yeah, and how about all the toxins and chemicals used to produce the chips inside your computer from which you access the Internet? And how about all the trucks and planes that had to deliver that computer to you?

All "technology" has its ramifications.

Very sad. I work in the food industry and am saddened. I do love Cooks Illustrated though. I think there are WAY too many bridal magazines though I feel for the staff. I LOVED Domino :( Sad sad times.
