8 Soldiers from Fort Carson were killed in Afghanistan over the weekend in what is being called the deadliest day for the Colorado military base since Vietnam.

Hundreds of insurgents armed with automatic rifles and rocket-propelled grenades stormed a pair of remote outposts near the Pakistan border, killing eight U.S. soldiers and capturing more than 20 Afghan security troops in the deadliest assault against U.S. forces in more than a year, military officials said Sunday.
The Colorado Springs Gazette reports:
[Fort Carson] had lost 270 soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan before Saturday's deaths. Since the Afghanistan war began in 2001, the post's highest number of casualties in a single incident was five, a total reached in three Iraq bombings -- one in 2007 and two in 2008.
The AP cites an unnamed Afghan official in reporting that three Afghan soldiers and one policeman were killed in the battle. An unknown number of insurgents were also killed.
